WHAT IS AN OUTCOME?So many definitions, so little time.

• Instructional – Did the student acquire the knowledge, skills, and/or habits we expected?

• Educational – Did they earn the credential that they were pursuing?

• Societal/Life Outcomes – Did the education received have an impact on the person and their community?

SCENARIO TIME

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE INDUSTRY?

- What questions can you ask of the student to deepen your own understanding of their field of interest?- Do you know living artists? Who is your

favorite director? But who edited your favorite movie?

- Ask your student about their creative process. What excites them? When did they first realize this is what they wanted to do?

FRAMING OUTCOMES

- Understand that these are real things that people do

- Be honest- In every industry there is failure and movement

and adjustment and reflection and perspiration.

- Center the conversation on them- We may be thinking of transferable skills or the

likelihood of winning the Pulitzer – but share your pragmatic excitement with them.

- Plant seeds of other opportunities to complement their program of study.
