ABOUT THE COVER ART
The poem that is cited on the work is a poem written by Cai Xiang (蔡襄, 1012–1067), a renowned Chinese calligrapher, scholar, official, and poet of the Song dynasty. Cai Xiang is generally regarded as one of the top four calligraphers of the Song dynasty. The title of the poem is “Full Bloom of Plum Blossoms in the Backyard after November, Part II” (《十一月后庭梅花盛开》之二):
日暖香繁已盛开,开时曾绕百千回。 春风岂是多情思,相伴花前去又来。
Unofficial translation: When the weather starts to warm, the plum blossoms are already in full bloom, I’ve paced around hundreds and thousands of times admiring the blossoms.
Isn’t the wind of Spring full of love and sensuality, accompanying the blossoms as it comes and goes.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mr. Zhao Xiaoyan is a member of the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts Calligraphy and Seal, and a member of the Chinese Calligraphers Associa-tion. Mr. Zhao is also the founder of a calligraphy art studio (with various locations throughout Shenzhen) which integrates calligraphy, Chinese painting, creative arts, Chinese culture, Chinese instruments and Weiqi (Go). In the past ten years, Mr. Zhao Xiaoyan’s calligraphy art studio has trained more than 3,000 adult and young students. Mr. Zhao’s teaching adheres to the principles of “righteousness, good intent, proper behavior and practiced writing” has enabled students to fully develop their mind and body and learning. Mr. Zhao’s philosophy is: “Learning is basic, we must let the art live, live the art, and open every individual’s poetic life.”

SING, DANCE, PLAYAGES 3–4
Young children will engage in movement activities, play simple instruments and sing traditional songs based on Orff principles of music education. The Orff approach is a way of introducing and teaching children about music on a level that they can easily comprehend. Musical concepts are learned through singing, chanting, dance, movement, drama and the playing of percussion instruments including xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. Improvisation, composition and a child’s natural sense of play are encouraged. A key characteristic of this approach is that lessons are presented with an element of play, which helps the children learn at their own level of understanding.

RoboticsAGES 7+
Students will build and learn to write programs for the Vex IQ robot and will work through a series of guided physical challenges with their robots to develop programming skills. Among these challenges are navigating a maze, learning to use sensors, seeking and retrieving objects, and SUMO-bots. Students will engage in the Engineering/Design process, as they modify their robots for new challenges.
Through curriculum that meets the next generation science standards, elementary students will be engaged in authentic scientific experimentation, as well as become excited and energized to develop the skills necessary to be suc-cessful in the 21st century. Our program has been developed in conjunction with The New York Institute of Technology in Westbury.
