GODOLPHIN=S SOBETSUJOINS OAKS PARTY
After the heavy rain came to Epsom this week, >TDN Rising
Star= Sobetsu (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will bid for Classic glory in the
G1 Investec Oaks instead of waiting for the French equivalent to
make up a strong field of 10 fillies going to post on Friday.
Successful on testing ground in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary at
Deauville on May 14, Godolphin=s bay will be the sole
representative of the operation in the mile-and-a-half feature
and trainer Charlie Appleby said, AShe=s been declared and all
the indications are that on Friday it could be perfectly good
ground. We know she appreciates a bit of cut and she doesn=t
want it too quick, but we wouldn=t want it too testing on her
first start over a mile-and-a-half either. Good ground over a
mile-and-a-half should be fine for her and who=s to say in two
weeks= time for the French Oaks it won=t be quick ground? We=d
look a bit silly if that was the case and we=d missed the Oaks at
Epsom when the ground was suitable.@
He added that Sobetsu could also yet run at Chantilly in the G1
Prix de Diane. AI wouldn=t rule out doing the two. With the races
over two weeks apart that wouldn=t be beyond the realms of
possibility.@
Sobetsu has drawn 10 of 10, with Ballydoyle=s Rhododendron
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in five as she looks likely to start odds-on and
continue the winning run of her stable in the English and Irish
Classics in 2017. Cont. p2
SNITZEL MARES STAND OUT AT MAGICS The Magic Millions National Broodmare sale once again
returned figures comfortably up on last year during its second
session on the Gold Coast on Wednesday. From a larger
catalogue--572 offered thus far compared to 445 through day
two 12 months agoB490 have been sold at a clearance rate of
86%, up slightly from 84%. The gross of A$78,283,000 has
already surpassed last year=s three-day Book 1 total of
A$74,816,000. The average through the first two days is up 15%
at A$159,761, while the median has climbed 12.5% to A$90,000.
Two mares reached seven figures on Wednesday to bring total
millionaires at the sale so far to five, and both of Wednesday=s
millionaires were in foal to this season=s leading and record-
breaking sire Snitzel (Aus). The top lot of the day was Segenhoe
Stud=s The Party Stand (Aus) (Thorn Park {Aus}) (lot 941), who
was picked up by BBA Ireland=s Adrian Nicoll for A$1,100,000.

AL WUKAIR OUT OF JOCKEY CLUB Al Shaqab=s G3 Prix Djebel winner and G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas
third Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) has been ruled out of
Sunday=s G1 Prix du Jockey Club with a minor setback. Al
Shaqab=s Racing Manager Harry Herbert explained that while no
specific issue has been identified, trainer Andre Fabre wasn=t
happy with the colt=s general well-being.
"It's disappointing, but you can't run a horse like this in a
Group 1 if they are not 100%,@ Herbert said. AHe's such an
exciting horse and Andre didn't want to risk him. We will re-
group now and try to get to the bottom of the problem, if there
is one, and then go from there. I would say he's unlikely to go to
the [G1] St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot."
Al Shaqab won=t be without representation the Jockey Club, as
part owners of race favourite and G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains
winner Brametot (Fr) (Rajsaman {Fr}) with Gerard Augustin-
Normand.
O=BRIEN CHASING DERBY HISTORY Joseph O=Brien is plenty familiar with the winner=s enclosure of
the G1 Investec Derby, having visited it twice in the saddle of
Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) in 2012 and Australia (GB) (Galileo
{Ire}) two years later. On Saturday the 24-year-old will look to
become the first individual since 1961 to ride and train winners
of the Blue Riband when he saddles Lloyd Williams=s Rekindling
(Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}).
O=Brien, who trained a Group 1 winner in Intricately (Ire)
(Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in his first season as a trainer last year, said
a piece of history isn=t something that is on his mind, however,
as he prepares to saddle his first Derby runner. Cont. p4

O=Brien Chasing Derby History Cont.
"I've never really thought about creating history or anything
like that, to be honest," he said. "When you train racehorses it's
a 24-7 job, you don't really get much time to think of things like
that. You can't allow yourself to, really, as you'd put too much
pressure on yourself."
Rekindling bested fellow Derby contender Douglas Macarthur
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Ballysax S. at Leopardstown on Apr.
8, but dropped back to fourth in the G2 Dante S. on May 18 and
will have to buck 20-1 odds to land in the winner=s enclosure.
But O=Brien is able to find plenty of positives with his charge.
"When you have a horse like him who has won a trial in Ireland
and run well in traditionally the best trial in England, you have to
have a go at the Derby,@ he said. AOne thing Rekindling has in his
favour is experience. That's what he's got over those that have
only had two or three runs.@
"At the time of the Dante, a few people weren't that
impressed with the form because the winner [Permian] looked
exposed, but his form keeps on getting franked,@ O=Brien added.
"On reflection, I thought our lad ran a good race at York. He was
staying on again and did well to finish as well as he did because
he didn't like the ground. He's in good form, so when you have a
Derby horse you have to go for it. You never know if they are
going to handle the whole Epsom show until you get there, but
he's been over to York on a relatively busy day and nothing
bothered him there.@
Of his opposition, the young trainer added, "At the moment
there is no stand-out contender and you wouldn't be surprised if
there was a 20-1 winner, but you can guarantee after the race
there'll be one [a stand-out]. That's what the Derby does; it
produces champions. Something will come out of the
woodwork. This could be the year for a surprise and if it's ours,
we'll be delighted."

BHA RELEASES ANNUAL REPORT The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) published its 2016
annual report and accounts for 2016, which provide a
comprehensive review of its operating activity and financial
performance, on Wednesday. The report highlights areas that
achieved growth over several key metrics last term, including
participation, ownership, betting, viewing, field sizes and horses
in training. The sport=s new tripartite governance structure is
credited with helping to make this growth possible. For British
racing=s performance against key indicators, click here.
Key 2016 achievements include: significant progress toward
reforming the Levy, which came into effect on Apr. 25, 2017 and
unlocks approximately £30- to £40-million in additional income
for the sport; raising over £12-million of additional revenue
through the Authorised Betting Partner scheme; significant
progress in implementing the recommendations of the Integrity
Review and subsequent Quinlan Review; development of a
three-year business plan and budget; and improved financial
performance with the forecast deficit reduced by 50% in 2016.
ARacing made good progress in 2016 through having in place a
clear growth strategy, strong governance and strong leadership
both within the BHA and across the sport,@ said Steve Harman,
Chairman of the BHA. AThe additional revenues secured from
April 2017 via the replacement Levy represent the start, rather
than the end, of a journey towards long-term sustainable
growth. I would like to thank all of those working in our great
sport for the part they play from before dawn to after dusk and
for your continued support in the future.@
Added Nick Rust, Chief Executive of the BHA, A2016 was a year
which saw us make good progress against our strategic
objectives, not least in securing long-term sustainable funding
for the sport, which has now come into effect and will generate
much-needed revenue for the industry. This, together with
growth witnessed in a number of the sport=s key indicators,
mean there is a good reason to feel optimistic about the future
of our sport.@

objectives and highlights of progress made against these
objectives, click here. For the full 2016 annual report and

BHA BAN MANGAN FROM DERBY; >LIA=
WITHDRAWN IN PROTEST The BHA released a statement Wednesday evening banning
apprentice Gina Mangan=s participation in the G1 Investec
Epsom Derby aboard maiden Diore Lia (Ire) (Yeats {Ire}) on
June 3.
AThe BHA has been in contact with Mr. Jenkins, the trainer of
Diore Lia, and the owner=s representative, regarding Gina
Mangan=s participation in the Investec Epsom Derby,@ said Jamie
Stier, Chief Regulatory Officer for the British Horseracing
Authority (BHA) in a statement. AFollowing these discussions,
the connections were this afternoon informed that the BHA has
decided under Rule (F)83 that it would be in the best interests of
the sport not to accept the declaration of Gina Mangan as the
rider of Diore Lia should she be put forward for the ride in the
Investec Derby. Everyone involved in horseracing has a
responsibility to place the welfare of our participants, both
equine and human, first. It is in this context that the decision has
been made.@
To read the full BHA statement, go to www.britishhorseracing.com.
Following the ruling by the BHA, owner Richard Aylward has
refused to allow Diore Lia to take her place at Epsom Saturday,
reported Racing Post.
AThe BHA have told us we cannot have Gina Mangan on board
on Saturday and, as such, I=m refusing to run the horse now,@
Aylward told Racing Post Wednesday evening. AI got a telephone
call from [BHA chief regulartor officer] Jamie Stier saying they=ve
made a decision today not to allow her to ride in the race and
that the horse can run if another jockey is on board, but we=re
not allowing her to run now.@
The John Jenkins-trained filly, rated 52 on Racing Post Ratings,
would have had any earnings from her Epsom performance
donated to the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity.
AWe=ve had people donate tonight from America to the
charity, all on the grounds of the horse being in the race,@
Aylward continued. AWe=re in the Derby to have a go at it, and
the BHA have been got to. They=ve changed their mind.@
Declarations for the Investec Derby are due Thursday.

IS OVERPRODUCTION THE REAL
PROBLEM IN THE BLOODSTOCK
INDUSTRY? 'Those who cannot remember the past are
condemned to repeat it' - George Santayana
We've been here before, haven't we? It was
less than a decade ago that "overproduction"
was one of the most talked-about subjects in the bloodstock
industries in Great Britain and Ireland. The booming Celtic Tiger
economy in Ireland had led to a substantial increase in the
number of foals being produced. This had in turn led to supply
overtaking demand in the foal and yearling markets, with
greatly-increased numbers of horses at the lower end of the
market failing to find a home at the sales. All sorts of regulation
changes and measures were suggested to
try and rein in this apparent
overproduction, but ultimately none of
them were needed, as drastic changes in
the wider economic world were about to
shake the bloodstock industry to its core.
History shows that the correction came in
the shape of the worldwide financial crisis
in 2007/08, which led to the foal crop in
Ireland being reduced from a high of
12,633 in 2007 to 7,588 in 2010. The
British breeding industry has historically
not been as open to drastic production
fluctuations as its Irish equivalent, but their foal numbers still
dropped from a high of 5,920 in 2008 to 4,665 in 2010.
While it took most sectors of the economy many years to
recover from the hammer blow of the recession, the bloodstock
sector bounced back much faster than most. This was most
likely because the correction in foal numbers was made so
quickly once the crisis hit that it brought supply back in line with
demand much faster than was possible in most other industries.
In the years following this vast correction, it seems to have
been a case of "once bitten, twice shy" for British breeders with
foal numbers remaining almost identical in 2016 to what they
were in 2012. However, it has been a different story in Ireland,
with foal numbers rebounding from a low of 7,546 in 2012 to
9,381 at the end of 2016. This increase in foal numbers have
correlated with a decrease in clearance rates at many sales,
particularly at the lower end of the foal and yearling markets,
which has led to the reigniting of the same debates we were
hearing a decade ago.
As was the case back then, the finger of blame is primarily
being pointed at the breeders. The main accusation is that many
of them are flooding the market with low-quality horses by
breeding from mares of poor quality and supporting stallions of
questionable merit. As was also the case over a decade ago,
there have been calls to introduce quality-control measures or
other restrictions in an effort to try to reduce this apparent poor
practice, but I would suggest that such calls are very much
ill-advised.
First and foremost, the bloodstock industry is a free market.
Breeders are allowed to produce whatever they see fit and their
horses will achieve the prices that the market dictates they are
worth at the sales. If this means they are generally breeding
horses at a loss, then that is their decision to make rather than
anyone else=s.
It also has to be remembered that the majority of breeders are
not commercial operators. Indeed, perhaps the most readily
overlooked statistic in the whole bloodstock industry is that over
90% of registered breeders in Great Britain and Ireland own four
or fewer mares. The bloodstock industry is
not dominated by a small number of big
players as one may be led to believe, but
rather it is built on a foundation of a vast
number of small-scale and hobby breeders.
Many of these breeders do not expect to
make a profit, but they hope to. They can't
afford to buy well-bred and talented fillies
off the track and send them to higher-end
proven sires to give themselves the best
chance at making a profit from the outset.
Thus, they do the best they can within their
budget and hope for some good fortune
that will boost the value of their stock in the shape of producing
a talented runner, the mare's pedigree getting a significant
update or the stallion that they have used becoming suddenly
fashionable.
While some commentators will continue to look down on this
lower end of the breeding market, it shouldn't be
underestimated just how important a role the lower-end
breeder plays in the industry. It is the smaller breeder that
essentially acts as the gold panner of the bloodstock world. They
invest their time and money into breeding from less
commercially attractive mares and using lesser stallions that
higher-end breeders generally shun, often at a financial loss, in
the hope of unearthing the occasional gold nugget amongst the
waste.
Indeed, it is worth remembering that of the six stallions in
Ireland with published covering fees currently standing for
i50,000 or more, Invincible Spirit, Dark Angel, Kodiac and
Exceed And Excel all started their stallion careers standing at
fees of i10,000 or less. Cont. p7

Blake Op/Ed Cont.
It is also worth remembering that the small breeders that
played such a role in getting these stallions off and running did
so with little scope for long-term gain, as once a stallion starts to
succeed, they are soon priced well out of the range of the small
breeders that used them when the bigger breeders weren't as
willing to get involved.
Similarly, the world of breeding is full of examples of mares
that had poor credentials when being retired to stud, but
punched well above their weight
as broodmares. A recent
example is that of Galicuix (GB)
(Galileo {Ire}), the dam of Galileo
Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}). She
finished stone last in her two
starts on the racecourse and
twice failed to reach her modest
reserve at the breeding stock
sales prior to being bought for
just 8,000gns while carrying the
foal that would become Galileo
Gold. He is just one of
multitudes of Group 1 winners
that would never have come
into existence had there been
restrictions placed on
broodmares only being allowed to breed after achieving a
minimum level of racecourse performance, as has been
suggested on numerous occasions as a solution to the
"overproduction problem."
In a nutshell, the small breeders play a
major role in sorting the wheat from the
chaff among unproven stallions and mares
at the lower end of the market. This
importance of this role to the industry
shouldn't be underestimated and it would
be a mistake to point the finger of blame at
them for what is playing out in the
bloodstock industry at present. Indeed,
rather than the problem being
overproduction as is widely concluded, I
would suggest that under-demand at the lower end of the
market is the real problem.
The racing programmes in Great Britain and Ireland are more
than extensive enough to handle greater numbers of horses
being produced. Indeed, British racing in particular is crying out
for more horses in training given that the average field sizes
have shrunk as the number of fixtures has increased. The
problem is that there are simply not enough owners that are
willing to buy and race horses in Great Britain and Ireland. Thus,
rather than trying to find ways to reduce the number of horses
being produced, perhaps we should be looking at ways to
increase racehorse ownership for the greater good of the
industry as a whole?
If the British and Irish racing authorities are looking for ideas as
to how to achieve this, perhaps the best example to put forward
is that of the enduring and substantial popularity of racehorse
syndicates in Australia. While there are some excellent
well-established syndication companies in Great Britain and
Ireland such as Middleham Park
Racing and the Supreme Racing
Club, syndicates have not taken
off in this part of the world to
anything like the extent that
they have in Australia and
perhaps we should be asking
why that is.
One of the biggest issues that
syndicate members meet with in
this part of the world is
difficulties with raceday basics
such as getting tickets and
parade-ring access for all of the
owners involved in a syndicate.
In Australia, any syndicate
member that holds a 5% or
greater share in a horse is entitled to the same ownership
benefits as a sole owner and that is the standard British and Irish
tracks should be obliged to adhere to. Likewise, there is certainly
scope for more trainers to embrace and
encourage syndication than they currently
do. The likes of Whatsapp make it very
easy to keep large numbers of owners in
the loop at the touch of a button and there
is no excuse for any trainer to not be
capable of providing such a service.
In terms of what the racing authorities
can do, it should be clear that it is the
lower end of the yearling market that
needs a helping hand, so perhaps they can
encourage investment at this level by
introducing more auction maidens for horses that were
purchased for lowly prices? High-class horses consistently
emerge from the lower end of the yearling market every year,
but that still doesn't make putting a cheaply-bought yearling into
training an easy sell when they are likely to face well-bred and
well-connected rivals when they reach the track. Offering more
maiden opportunities confined to those purchased at a lower
level can only serve to make ownership at that level more
attractive. Cont. p8

If all the sectors of the industry can identify that an increase in
foal production is much more of an opportunity than a threat if
dealt with in the correct manner, they can all start pushing in
the same direction in working towards an increase in new
ownership which is of equal benefit to both the racing and
bloodstock industries.

AREION FILLY TOPS BBAG BREEZE-UP BBAG held its breeze-up sale at Iffezheim on Friday with
consignors for the 64-horse auction hailing from Britain, Ireland,
France, Sweden, and of course Germany.
From a strong clearance rate of 77% in 2016, this figure
dropped by 10 points this time around, prompting falls in all
other sectors, with the aggregate of i413,200 for 43 lots sold
representing a 25% reduction in turnover. At i9,609, the
average was down by 18%.
Haras de Saint Arnoult, a leading French consignment run by
Larissa Kneip, was responsible for the top lot (33), a filly by
Areion (Ger) out of the dual winner Estella (Ger) (Acatenango
{Ger}) who was bought by Richard Venn for i43,000.
AThe plan is for the filly to go into training in Deauville with
Stephane Wattel, hopefully to take advantage of the fact that
she is eligible for French premiums,@ said the agent of the
relation to Group 1 winners Empoli (Ger) and Elle Danzig (Ger).
AShe=s been bought for a British client, Pat Betts, who also has
jumpers in training in the UK with Lucy Wadham, Brendan
Powell and Nick Gifford.@
A first-crop son of Maxios (GB) (lot 77) was the top-priced colt
of the sale, with Bjorn Olsson going to i30,000 for the colt out
of the Swedish juvenile champion filly Danila (Swe) (Silvano

The sale=s highest-profile graduate remains the G1 Prix de l=Arc

i9,000 as a 2-year-old at BBAG in 2010.

Snitzel Mares Stand Out At Magics Cont. from p1
The Party Stand won the G1 New Zealand S. in her racetrack
days and Nicoll is already plenty familiar with her progeny,
having bought her stakes-placed daughter Petition (Aus)
(Foxwedge {Aus}) as a yearling.
"She was the one we wanted all week," Nicoll said. "She's a
beautiful mare and she's in foal to the right horse. I bought
Petition as a yearling so I know quite a lot about what she can
produce. Petition was a A$560,000 yearling, quite an expensive
filly by Foxwedge, and she's been very unlucky--she should have
won a stakes by now and she will definitely win a stakes or
group race next year."
Segenhoe Stud offered The Party Stand on behalf of John
Camilleri=s Fairway Thoroughbreds, best known as the breeder
of the great Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) and 2-year-old
champion Vancouver (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro).
The other seven-figure mare sold in foal to Snitzel, Comprende
(Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) (lot 1123), was secured by Widden
Stud in partnership with David Lucas for A$1,050,000. The
stakes-placed half-sister to a pair of group winners was sold by
Willow Park Stud carrying her first foal.
"We're thrilled to have her," said Widden=s Antony Thompson.
"She's a queen. Physically she's beautiful. She was a very high-
priced yearling [A$440,000] when she sold. At that stage I Am
Invincible hadn't emerged so her price was mostly on type. She
was our number one physical pick of the sale and we're thrilled
to have her."
Wednesday=s session also saw some smart returns for mares in
foal to unproven sires. Darley=s 3-year-old champion sprinter
Brazen Beau (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}), who was the highest
averaging first-season sire at last week=s National Weanling Sale,
had a mare in-foal sell for A$950,000 on Wednesday. That was
Breccia (NZ) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) (lot 1078), and her appeal was
no doubt driven by the fact that she is the dam of this year=s G1
All Aged S. victor Tivaci (Aus) (High Chaparral {Ire}). Signing the
ticket on the 10-year-old mare was New Zealand-based agent
Dean Hawthorne.
"Her first foal is a Group 1 winner and a fast horse,"
Hawthorne said. "She's a quality mare--a beautiful mare. The
reports on the other foals coming along behind are good."
Of the week=s trade, he added, "It's been so strong this week
and a number of mares have sold for around this price and they
are unproven--whereas this mare's first foal is the Group 1
winner who's now gone to stud in New Zealand and he will get
very well supported over there."
The first mares in foal to Coolmore=s G1 Golden Slipper winner
Vancouver (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro) are being offered at this
year=s breeding stock sales, and he enjoyed a good result when
Blueberry Hill (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) (lot 1075) commanded
A$600,000 from Widden Stud. The 4-year-old Blueberry Hill,
winner of the G2 Champagne Classic in Brisbane, was sold
carrying her first foal.
Vancouver=s sire Medaglia d=Oro also got his name high on the
price list with an in-foal mare, Godolphin=s Tremor (Aus)
(Commands {Aus}) (lot 959), bought by Aquis Farm with Julian
Blaxland=s Blue Sky Bloodstock for A$820,000. The 4-year-old
was a dual winner but her appeal stems largely from the fact
that she is a half-sister to Godolphin=s G1 Blue Diamond S.
winner Earthquake (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). She is also a
full to the stakes-winning Palomares (Aus) (Commands {Aus}).
Another Group 1 producer sold on the day was Bubble Below
(Aus) (Hussonet) (lot 1086), whose Lucky Bubbles (Aus) (Sebring
{Aus}) won Hong Kong=s G1 Chairman=s Sprint Prize after the
catalogue was published. The 11-year-old mare, a half-sister to
two stakes winners including the dam of this year=s G2 Todman
S. winner Gunnison (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}), was
secured by E Thoroughbred for A$700,000. That price was
matched later in the session by Widden=s Fairy Star (Aus) (More
Than Ready) (lot 1199), a stakes-placed mare in foal to
Redoute=s Choice (Aus) secured by Spendthrift Australia.
Wednesday=s session saw the first offerings at the sale in foal
to Frankel (GB) and Tapit go through the ring. A pair of mares in
foal to Frankel realised A$460,000 and A$400,000 and were
respectively bought by Rosemont Stud and Paul Willetts
Bloodstock, while the well-related Etched (Ire) in foal to Frankel
left the ring unsold at A$375,000. Cont. p12

Snitzel Mares Stand Out at Magics Cont. from p1
The highest-priced mare in foal to Tapit was the Grade III
winner Best Behavior (Into Mischief), who fetched a half-million
from Phoenix Investments. Phoenix agent David Lucas signed for
another mare in foal to the American champion sire at
A$180,000, while another sold for A$260,000 and another was
unsold at A$200,000.
Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported upon
conclusion of day two, "two days in and we're sitting at a gross
just over A$78-million, which is very, very good. Last year we
closed out [day two] at A$51-million. In fact, we're in front of
the overall total of the three days last year already. The market
is holding strong and the clearance rate is about 86% and with
the big numbers we're selling everything is holding up."

LAXON TO RETURN TO NEW ZEALAND Laurie Laxon, nine times the leading trainer in Singapore and
winner of better than 1200 races over the course of the past 17
years, is set to return to his native New Zealand as early as this
September to take up training duties for Pencarrow Stud=s Sir
Peter Vela from his Maungatautari farm in Waikato.
AIt=s been a wonderful experience, but it=s time to go, while I=m
still healthy. I=ve done it all,@ Laxon, who was the fourth
generation in his
family to train
horses (his
great-grandfather
Owen Curran-
McGee, an Irish
vet, was the first),
told the Singapore
Turf Club=s Michael
Lee. AI still
remember my
beginnings here.
George Simon, who was then the race caller at Kranji, rang me
up and asked me if I wanted to train in Singapore. At first, I
wasn=t so keen, as I didn=t want to travel up to Ipoh or Penang,
but he told me Singapore was a standalone meeting then. I
discussed with my wife Sheila, and as I was going to the Darwin
Cup to run St Clair on the first Monday of August, I decided to fly
a little further up north to have a look around after the Cup.
He continued, AThe place looked great, I had to think about it,
but in the end, I went for it. Things got off to a slow start,
though. I had only 25 horses in my first full season and 16
winners. I was told my occupancy rate was too low. I actually
had six new horses, but I didn=t want to run them, as it would
not have much impact halfway through the season against the
likes of Charles Leck or Malcolm Thwaites. So, I raced them the
next year, had another eight in February and by May and June, I
had 100 horses! I had to send some to Bukit Timah.
AI=ve been lucky to have very good owners throughout these
17 years, and rest assured I am working with the Singapore Turf
Club and other trainers to make sure they have good
alternatives for their horses.@
Laxon, 71, has seen his trainees win each of Singapore=s
feature races, bar the now-discontinued Singapore Airlines
International Cup and KrisFlyer Sprint and conditioned no fewer
than five horses of the year, including Stepitup (Aus) (Hussonet)
as recently as 2015. He became the first to bring up a century of
winners in Singapore in 2004 and was the first trainer to ring up
1000 races at Kranji.

POULOS EARNS THE GRADE
by Michael Adolphson
Walk onto the Arlington International Racecourse=s apron
during training hours any morning during the iconic Chicago
landmark=s summer meet and you will see her. Often adorned
with a smile, sun hat and her trademark sunglasses, trainer Dee
Poulos is the first to take a moment from carefully observing her
horses to greet you if you are new and the quickest to wave at
even the most tangential of acquaintances. She is the First Lady
of Illinois racing, the widow of renowned Midwestern trainer
Ernie Poulos and now--20 years after taking over the Poulos
operation as head trainer (at the age of none-of-your-business)--
a graded stakes-winning conditioner, thanks to a little bay
gelding Crewman (Candy Ride {Arg}).
Dundalk 5 LLC=s Crewman, like Poulos, is honest,
hard-knocking and comes from great stock. After two races for
WinStar Farm and Shannon Ritter, Poulos claimed the compact
charge for $25,000 at Hawthorne Race Course on Halloween
2014. Since then, the patient conditioner has taken her time
developing the sometimes difficult athlete, racing 29 times over
three different surfaces and receiving ample time off when
needed. Consistency has been his game, as Crewman has hit the
board in 20 of 31 starts, including two stakes victories in the last
six months. His gritty neck tally at 25-1 in Arlington=s GIII
Hanshin Cup May 13 gave the former high school teacher an
overdue graduation into the graded stakes ranks. Cont. p3

POULOS EARNS THE GRADE cont from p1
AIt was extremely rewarding,@ Poulos said. AWe weren=t cocky
about it, but we did feel very good about him going into the
race. He really trained for it properly and things were falling into
place. I knew he was going to give a tremendous effort. I feel
like, as trainers, we rarely know if they=re going to win, we just
know if they=re ready and I knew he was going to give
everything he had. He came out of this race super and mentally
he=s very good right now.
AIt certainly is nice to attain a graded stakes,@ Poulos
continued. AI was so focused on the race and hoping he would
run his very best, that I honestly didn=t even think about trying
to win a graded stakes for the first time. (Jockey C. H.) Marquez
did a heck of a job with the horse and I always tell the riders to
not make the horse mad and he listened. He=s a horse who
really interacts with you and you can tell when he looks at you,
that he=s thinking. He=s a very smart horse and nothing went
right for him at Oaklawn this winter. After that, I turned him out,
freshened him up and brought him back. That really helped.
AIt was wonderful to win it at Arlington. It=s wonderful to win a
race anywhere, and we were so happy when he won the
[$50,000 Forego S. Jan. 21] at Turfway, too, but there=s
something about being home. Mr. D. (Arlington Park chairman
Richard Duchossois), who was a good friend of my husband=s,
came up to me after the race and the first thing he said was that
Ernie must be smiling.@
As patient as she is eloquent, the former Forest View High
School (of Arlington Heights, Il.) teacher of 18 years approaches
the racing game with new eyes every day, while balancing that
with an almost palpable wisdom in her delivery. She enjoys
talking about the best horses she has been around, but just as
quickly waxes poetic about the nickel claimers whose unique
personalities made her job that much more interesting.

As an assistant to her husband, the pair developed Horse of
the Year and GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner Black Tie Affair
(Ire) (Miswaki). Since her husband=s 1997 passing, Poulos has
had her fair share of ups and downs, but always seems to find
her own sense of equilibrium.
AWe got off to a rough start this year, but I always tell people
that you have to wait your turn when it comes to luck and
racing,@ Poulos said. ASometimes the stars just don=t line up for
you, even if you have fresh horses ready to run, and it can be
very tough on everybody involved. Then a horse like Crewman
jumps up and does something like this and it picks everybody=s
heads up. We needed that adrenaline fix and I was so happy to
win it for Mr. (Tim) Kindlon, the owner. I can=t say enough good
things about him. He allowed us to take the path we have and
let this horse develop. He=s one of those dream owners for a
trainer.@
Racing luck could be swinging back her way and such would be
karmically appropriate for Poulos. Conscious that she is
respected by her peers for her many aforementioned qualities,
the long-time Chicagoland resident and winner of 336 races
enjoys being a solid role model for horsemen and--women--
alike.
AI never thought of myself as a woman trainer or a female
teacher, I always believe that you just do the job--trainer or
teacher--and that=s who you are,@ Poulos concluded. AThat being
said, I will say you have to be tenacious as a woman in this
industry. It=s a competitive business with peaks and valleys.
There=s downtime, losing races, trying to keep clients and lots of
challenges out there, but you just have to take the good with the
bad and hang in there.@

Cupid winning the Gold Cup at Santa Anita | Benoit Photo
CUPID A BOOK 1 SCORE FOR COOLMOREby Joe Bianca
AInside the Winner=s Circle, Presented by Keeneland@ is a series
showcasing graduates of the Keeneland September sale that
have gone on to achieve success on racing=s biggest stages.
It=s difficult to find a horse with more human firepower and
resulting hype behind them than Cupid (Tapit). The gray colt is
by America=s foremost sire, was bought for $900,000 out of the
first book of the prestigious Keeneland September sale
(sales ring video) by
international powerhouse
Coolmore, and is trained by a
horse racing legend in Bob
Baffert.
The colt had a successful
sophomore season in 2016,
but it wasn=t until this past
Saturday, when sent off at
the longest odds of his career
in the GI Gold Cup at Santa
Anita, that Cupid truly
showed the scope of his
potential, dominating the
race formerly known as the
Hollywood Gold Cup in his
4-year-old debut.
Capturing the GII Rebel S.
last March, Cupid was considered a top contender for the GI
Kentucky Derby, but finished 10th in the GI Arkansas Derby and
came out the race diagnosed with an entrapped epiglottis that
required surgery, dashing his first Saturday in May hopes.
Returning to triumph in the GII Indiana Derby and GII West
Virginia Derby last summer, Cupid was shelved for eight months
after fading to finish eighth in the GII Pennsylvania Derby
Sept. 24.
Having to miss his planned prep for the Gold Cup, the
GII Californian S. Apr. 22 at Santa Anita due to a superficial cut
to his hock, Cupid was sent off as a 7-1 outsider in the Gold Cup
and found a cozy stalking spot in fourth. Tugging rider Rafael
Bejarano to the lead not long after the half-mile pole, he
strongly kicked clear despite drifting in and being slow to switch
leads and came home a no-doubt winner in easily the best
performance of his career.
ATo come off an eight-month layoff and win a Grade I is a huge
achievement,@ said Dermot Ryan, manager of Coolmore
America. ABob Baffert and his team deserve a lot of credit for
getting him there after things didn=t go to plan in the Californian,
and obviously it illustrates Cupid=s talent as well.@
While the KEESEP price tag for Cupid was a substantial one, his
dam, Pretty n= Smart (Beau Genius), is no stranger to dropping
coveted offspring. Originally bought for $40,000 as a Keeneland
November weanling in 1998, the graded stakes-placed mare=s
first foal sold for $175,000 as a KEESEP yearling and her next
three foals to sell, including graded stakes winners Ashley=s Kitty
(Tale of the Cat) and Heart
Ashley (Lion Heart), were
six-figure purchases as well.
This success led Pretty n=
Smart to sell for $525,000 as
a 2008 KEENOV broodmare
and after throwing two more
foals who hammered for
$350,000 and $490,000 as
yearlings, she broke the
seven-figure mark when her
Tapit colt Dream Team went
for an even $1 million to the
Coolmore contingent at
KEESEP in 2013, one year
before Cupid sold.
Tom Van Meter of Van
Meter Sales consigned Dream Team, as well as the $490,000
colt, Indianapolis (Medaglia d=Oro), also a Coolmore buy, in
2012.
A[Cupid]=s two immediate older siblings had been our
highest-selling yearlings in their respective years,@ Van Meter
told the Keeneland sales team. ABoth of those colts were
immensely talented, but unluckily were never able to show their
true abilities at the racetrack.@
Pretty n= Smart produced her second consecutive Tapit colt in
Cupid, and Van Meter saw a difference in him from his sire=s
more typically aggressive offspring.
AMany of the Pulpit/Tapit line horses can be plenty fierce, but
this colt had a lovely, sweet disposition,@ he said. AHe was a
mature, correct, long-barreled yearling and a very good walker.
At the sale, he was very popular and seemed to land on the list
of all the big boys.@

Another Tapit--Pretty n= Smart production, the filly Sweet
Assassin, upheld her dam=s sale standard when going for
$500,000 to Solis/Litt at KEESEP in 2015, and she has yet one
more Tapit filly set to sell with Van Meter this September, as
well as an American Pharoah filly born Feb. 17.
Cupid=s Gold Cup heroics were part of a big weekend for
Keeneland September yearling graduates at Santa Anita, as
superstar turf distaffer Lady Eli (Divine Park), a $160,000
purchase at the sale in 2013, conquered the GI Gamely S. earlier
on the Saturday card.
Lady Eli, however, was already
a multiple Grade I-winner, while
Cupid=s initial top-level score
cemented him as a valuable
stallion prospect after
retirement.
AHe=s an exceptional looking
horse from a great family and
being a son of Tapit is sure to
make him commercial,@ Ryan
said. AHe was always a horse we
had high hopes for, but to get a
Grade I next to his name really
take him to a new level, and I=m
sure he will prove popular when
the time comes for him to retire at Ashford.@
Ryan went on to explain why Keeneland sales, September in
particular, attract so much of Coolmore=s buying attention in
America.
AOur relationship with Keeneland goes back decades, and their
sales have always been a happy hunting ground for us,@ he said.
AThe importance of Keeneland September is long-established
and each year, they put together a high-quality selection of
horses, particularly at the top end in Book 1. Cupid is a great
example of the type of horse you can find in September. He had
a great page and was a very good-looking horse at the sale.@
Ryan noted that Air Force Blue (War Front), who took home
European champion 2-year-old male honors for Coolmore in
2015 after winning a trio of Group 1's and is now standing at
Ashford, was also part of their 2014 KEESEP haul, hammering for
$490,000.
After winning the Gold Cup, Baffert reflected on the circuitous
route Cupid took as a sophomore and the development of his
charge from age three to four.
AWe took the back roads with Cupid last year and made over a
million dollars,@ the Hall of Fame conditioner said. ACoolmore
has been great and they kept him in training. They asked me if I
thought he=d get better and I thought he should. We freshened
him up and here we are. He=s changed a lot, he=s really filled out.
He=s always been a beautiful horse. His class showed up and he=s
been working so well.@
All of that human firepower behind Cupid paid off handsomely
Saturday, and thanks in no small part to his victory, it probably
won=t be far in the future when big buyers are knocking heads to
bid on little Cupids at Keeneland September.

In racing, we hear the word Normandy and im-
mediately think Deauville, Arqana Sales, the
lovely Clairefontaine Racecourse, Calvados,
apple tarts and caramel. But to the world, of
course, three-quarters of a century ago, Nor-
mandy represented something far more sem-
inal; the largest invasion in history and by the
time the battle of Normandy was over, more
than 50,000 Allied troops had given their lives
in an effort which resulted in the turning point
in the war. In this edition of TDN Weekend, we
offer advice on exploring Normandy’s World
War II history while you’re in Deauville for your
equine pursuits this summer. We also profile
successful owner Michael Dubb, whose Anna
House is changing the lives of the children of
Belmont’s backstretch workers; talk vintage
top hats (and tails) with Ascot’s official top-hat
licensee, Kristian Robson; tell you why if you’re
going to the Melbourne Cup, you should start
