translated to: “the Lord,” “sovereignty,” אדן- .“master,” “ruler,” etc- As a term of social order, ‘ādôn’ in its basic meaning is defined in opposition to terms such as ‘ebed’ (servant) with ‘āmâ’ or ‘šiphâ’ (maid -fem.)

-  The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your body will be full of light (NIV)

ἁπλοῦς = single, simple; generous = singleness on purpose or undivided loyalty

-  Store up treasures on earth: v.16 (ant.) look gloomy like the hypocrites, so can be seen by others

-  but if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness (NIV)

πονηρός = bad, evil; evil eye indicates ‘envy’, not fixed to God but on earthly things

-  ‘ādôn’ distinguishes itself in this manner very clearly from ‘ba’al’

-  The word בעל (baal) means ‘owner’ understood as the ‘owner’ of a woman, i.e: as ‘husband’ (2 Sam 11:26)

-  Readily combines with other nouns in construct relationship, describing the ‘owner’ as bearer of a characteristic or as involved with a given thing or activity (e.g,. Baal hahalomot = owner of dreams/ dreamer)
