• With   Black   Friday,   Small   Business   Saturday   and   Cyber  Monday   behind   us,   nonprofits  (and  some  for-‐profits)  are  out  in  full  force  promoting  the  fourth  annual  Giving  Tuesday.

• Founded  in  2012  by  leaders  at  the  92nd  Street  Y  (a  New  York  City  community  center)  and   the   United   Nations   Foundation,   Giving   Tuesday   is   intended   to   make   both  consumers  and  businesses  pause,   reflect  and  give  back   to  worthy   causes.  People  are  encouraged  to  share  their  acts  of  generosity  using  the  #GivingTuesday  hash  tag.

• Last  year,  The  NonProfit  Times  found  that  people  and  organizations  donated  more  than  $45.7  million  on  Giving  Tuesday,  up  60%  from  $19  million  in  2013  and  up  239%  from  its   first   year,   2012.   About   296,000   gifts   were   given   to   15,100   nonprofits   on   Giving  Tuesday  in  2014.

• Techy   gimmicks   such   as   the   virtual   reality   “Giving   Tower”  (which  lets  consumers  use  their  smartphone  to  see  donations  and   instantly   give   in   order   to   help   “build”   the   tower),   along  with   celebrity   support   from   personalities   and   actors   such   as  Edward   Norton,   are   pushing   broader   awareness   of   the  initiative.

• Giving   Tuesday   has   a   variety   of   tools   on   its   website,   from   a   curriculum   guide   for  teachers   to  a  popular   “unselfie”   template,   through  which  people   can  print  and   fill   in  their  own  “I  give  because…”  sign,  and  then  snap  and  share  their  picture  on  Instagram  and  Twitter.

• In   2014,   the   #GivingTuesday   and   #UNselfie   hash   tags  were   used   in  more   than   7,500  Instagram  posts  and  754,600  tweets,  up  180%  from  2013.

• In  addition  to  pure  donations,  many  nonprofits  chose  to   promote   sales   of   handmade,   fair-‐trade   goods   on  Giving  Tuesday,  with  the  profits  benefiting  the  goods’  creators   as   well   as   community   organizations.   For  example,   Indego  Africa   is   offering   goods  made  by  more   than  600  women   in  Rwanda  who  earn  a  profit   from  sales  and  learn  how  to  run  their  own  business  through  a  new  leadership  academy.

Many   for-‐profits   have   gotten   involved   as  well.   Last   year,   creative   for-‐profit   participants  included  H&M,  which  donated  $7.5  million  worth  of  new  apparel   to  help  dress   those   in  need  during  the  holiday  season;  Visa,  which  donated  $15  to  the  American  Red  Cross  each  time   a   donation   was   made   using   Visa   Checkout;   Walgreens,   which   matched   every  pneumonia   vaccine   administered   at   Walgreens   pharmacies   between   Black   Friday   and  Giving   Tuesday   to   the   UN   Foundation’s   Shot@Life   campaign;   and   Home   Depot,   which  launched  a  month-‐long  campaign  on  Giving  Tuesday  that  invited  people  to  tweet  using  the  hash   tag   #DoingMore4Vets   to   support   US   veterans—the   company   donated   $1   for   each  retweet.

 THE  BUZZ  ABOUT  GIVING  TUESDAY

• This  year,  38%  of  millennials  plan   to  participate   in  Giving  Tuesday,  up  from  8%  last  year,   according   to   research   from   Crossroads.  Millennials   are   said   to   be   one   of   the  most   charitable   generations   of   all   time,   and   the  majority   of   those   not   participating  have  likely  either  never  heard  of  Giving  Tuesday  or  simply  cannot  afford  to  participate.

• While   there   has   been   some  negative  reaction  on  social  media  and   news   sites   to   for-‐profit  retailers   using   the  #GivingTuesday   hash   tag,   the  new  holiday  is  putting  consumers’  focus   back   on   giving   to   those   in  need,   and   individuals   can  continue   donating   and   building  the  Giving  Tower   throughout   the  holidays.

• Discover  is  launching  an  Employee  Giving  Program  on  Giving  Tuesday  2015,  providing  a  bonus  match  on  employee  donations  made  that  day.  Discover  is  also  engaging  card  members  by  providing  a  2%  match  when  card  members  donate  their  Cashback  Bonus  to  one  of  the  Cashback  Bonus  charity  partners  on  December  1.

• PayPal,  a  major  Giving  Tuesday  supporter,  will  add  1%  to  donations  made  through  its  site,  so  that  the  charity  recipient  gets  101%  for  every  donation.
