NSW - Premier’s Harmony DayBy Mirella Mammone

On Wednesday, 28th March the Inaugural Premier’s Harmony Dinner was hosted at the WatervieW function centre in the Bicentennial Park, Homebush. The event was an initiative by the Premier, Barry O’Farrell and Minister for Citizenship, Communities and Aboriginal Affairs, Victor Dominello.

During the Premier’s address, he stressed the importance of embracing multiculturalism. He stated the importance of recognising not only the unique features of each culture, but also how we are the same. O’Farrell also announced exciting initiatives which includes ‘Multicultural March’ – a whole month of celebrating cultural diversity which will commence in 2013 and he said that NSW should capitalise on this rich cultural diversity, with a future tourism campaign to be “Visit Sydney and Experience the World.”

Minister  Dominello also had a powerful address. Being of an Italian background, he mentioned how his grandfather was a prisoner of war and that two generations later, he is a Member of Parliament. The Minister unveiled the new budget of $1.4million dollars for the Multicultural Advantage Grants Program. He concluded by saying that the most important resources are not the minerals that are underground but our diamonds, the people.

The night was MC’d by ABC newsreader, Jeremy Fernandez and guests were blessed in a smoking ceremony by Uncle Max Eulo, an Aboriginal leader who has blessed everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Oprah Winfrey. SBS TV News Presenter, Peta Jane Madam and Community Relations Commissioner and Principal of Punchbowl  Boys High School, Mr. Jihad Dib presented a tribute to multiculturalism. Guests were also treated to many other performances which included Korean drums as well as Flamenco dancing.

The Italian Community had a strong presence with 5 tables which included The Hon. Marie Ficarra MLC, John Sidoti M.P, The Italian Consul Generale, Sergio Martes and GIA was represented by the NSW Rep. Mirella Mammone.
