GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN SUDAN

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY INDUSTRYSTRUCTURE IN SUDAN

In 2010 new structure has been established by splitting the National Electricity Corporation to the 5 companies as follow:-

1. Merowe Dam Electricity Company Ltd.

2. Sudanese Hydropower Generation Company Ltd.

3. Sudanese Thermal Power Generation Company Ltd.

4. Sudanese Transmission Lines Company Ltd.

5. Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company Ltd.

All 5 companies together with regulation authority under the supervision of Ministry of Electricity & Dams

GEOTHERMAL PREVIOUS STUDIES

No systemic exploration of geothermal resources has been carried in

Sudan.Robertson Research International Limited carried review of potential geothermal areas in 1987.

Evan & Tammemagi summarized the results of temperature gradient & heat flow studies for wells drilled in Red Sea coast 1974.

temperature gradient & heat flow studies of oil wells in central Sudan Rift system carried out for GRAS 1980.National Energy Administration – USA reviewed temperature data of Red Sea oil wells and proposed the development geothermal energy filed near shore exploratory oil wells

AREAS WITH GEOTHERMAL ENERGYPOTENTIAL

Tertiary to recent age volcanic fields in west, central and eastern areas of country.

The coastal plain adjacent to the Red Sea Rift zone.

The central Sudan Rift zones

GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL OF VOLCANICAREAS

Jebel Marra Area:

a. covered area of 140km by 50 km.b. Many hot springs with the temperature between 65 -85 ⁰C.c. Existing Fumaroles emit hot gases under pressure.d. Negative Gravity Anomaly – 1000 km wide, 50 Mgal

amplitude.e. It is planned to be connected to the national grid in 2013.

Tagbo & Meidob Hills:

a. No reports of surface thermal manifestationsb. Eastern side of the negative gravity anomaly.

GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL OFVOLCANIC AREAS

Bayuda Volcanic field:

a. It covers an area of about 520 km².b. Contains over 100 small recent scoria cones &

associated basaltic lavas.c. A number of volcanic centers consist of

explosive craters.d. No surface manifestation.e. Presence of small saline lake.f. North eastern limit of the gravity anomaly from

Jebel Marra.g. Already connected with national grid.

GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL OF THECENTRAL SUDAN RIFT ZONES

Central Sudan Rift Zones:

a. Extensive oil exploration has been carried out since the last reviewed in 1991.

b. No reported surface manifestations.

c. Earthquakes and heat flow anomalies have been reported 50 km south of khartoum.

d. Some tertiary and quaternary lavas are present in the region.

e. Robertson Research International ( 1987) found the temperature gradient range between 20 ⁰C/km and 30 ⁰C/km- but theoretically are attractive for future studies.

GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL OF THE RED SEACOASTAL PLAIN

Red Sea Coastal Plain:

a. More than 25 wells exploration has been drilled in the area.

b. High temperature toward the sea bed, low temperature in mainland.

c. Durwara-2 well encountered bottom hole temperature of up to 193 ⁰C and temperature gradient of 40 ⁰C/km.

d. 3 wells drilled on cost have high heat flow value about 100 mWm¯²

GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL OF THE RED SEACOASTAL PLAIN

AREAS WITH HIGH PRIORITY FOR INVESTIGATION

The Suakin area on Red Sea coast.

The volcanic field in the Bayuda Desert.

The Jebel Marra volcanic complex and adjacent areas.

FUTURE PLAN

Kengen will conduct detailed geo-scentific survey in prospect areas as follow:-

a. Geological mapping .

b. Hydro-geological data interpretation.

c. Geochemical investigations.

c. Geophysical investigations

c. Environmental baseline study

d. a conceptual model for further work.

Capacity building in related fields

WHAT WE NEED

a. Capacity building .

b. Legal framework.

c. Further study.

c. Finance and technical support for further study
