Introduction

Humans enjoy exciting places. Humans are gamblers.

This beach in Oregon is as dangerous as it is beautiful.Welcome to Geography 1000.

A key learning concept for Geography 1000 is that the world is always changing.

Human survival and prosperity are based on learning how the Earth works and being careful where we go and what we do.

In fact, humans have become so powerful that we are having a serious effect on Earth systems. Walk lightly if you can.

The following slides help illustrate some of the land alteration effects that are occurring in the Salt Lake area.

These slides also suggest ideas and techniques for assembling your own ePortfolio for Geography 1000.

A recent Geography student announced that a landslide had occurred near the State Capitol building. I was excited!

Then he sent me this picture.

Hmm.

Well, it does tell the story in a small way.

This is my neighborhood. In 2011, heavy rainfall put so much water in storm drains that the pipes blew up the

street pavement. Dry country often has the worst flooding.

In 1983 Utah had an “El Nino” year – and massive flooding.
