Genetic testing for breast cancer extended in Scotland

■ From 1 June this year, genetic testing for breastcancer will be extended in Scotland, meaning that therisk estimation level for testing will reduce from thecurrent 20% (i.e. women with a one-in-five chance ofhaving the faulty gene) to 10% (those with a one-in-10chance). "The Scottish Genetics LaboratoryConsortium steering group has already decided toextend the testing in line with the new NICErecommendation", said Scottish Health Secretary, AlexNeil. "We welcome the fact Scotland is mirroring thedraft NICE recommendation to extend tests to morewomen at risk of having the BRCA gene", adds JamesJopling, Scotland Director at Breakthrough BreastCancer.Scottish Government.
