FUTURE “GOING TO”

Let’s remember!

Future “going to” is used to talk about planned things in thefuture.For Example:

I am going to TRAVEL TO EUROPE IN WINTER.

USUALLY, A TRIP IS PLANNED IN ADVANCE! MY PLAN IS TO GO TO EUROPE.

Let’s remember!

Future “going to” can be in affirmative, negative orinterrogative form.For Example:I am going to travel to brazil in july. (+)I am not going to travel to brazil in july. (-)am i going to travel to brazil in july? (?)

Remember to add “not” if it is negative.

Remember to change the structure if it is a question.

Let’s remember!Future “going to” can be contracted as gonna which meansthe same, but remember gonna is not formal.

In future “going to” we can add a complement which can bea time expression.Obviously, this expression has to be in future!For example:

She is going to buy new shoes tomorrow.She is going to buy new shoes yesterday.

This indicates past.

FUTURE WILL FOR SPONTANOUS ACTIONS

FUTURE WITH WILL IS USED WHEN WE EXPRESS SPONTANOUS ACTIONSIN THE FUTURE.UNLIKE FUTURE GOING TO, WE DO NOT PLAN THESE ACTIONS. THEYARE COMPLETELY UNPLANNED.

FOR EXAMPLE:I WILL PICK UP THE PENCIL.

(imagine you dropped the pencil, you don’t plan to pick it up in advance)

FUTURE WILL TO MAKE PREDICTIONSWe use future will to make predictions when we think orbelieve something in the future.This can be based on a personal opinion.

FOR EXAMPLE:I think it will rain in the afternoon.

(maybe the sky is grey today and it’s cloudy!)

FUTURE WILL TO MAKE PROMISESWe use future will to make pROMISES (ALSO THREATS OR OFFERS)

FOR EXAMPLE:I will TEACH YOU FRENCH WHEN I GET HOME.(maybe I AM STUDYING IN FRANCE AND I AM GOING TO RETURN HOME SOON).

I will KILL YOU IF YOU SHARE MY SECRET!(maybe I TOLD MY FRIEND AN IMPORTANT SECRET).

I will PREPARE YOU SOME COFFEE.(MAYBE I AM IN A MEETING AND AN ASSITANT OFFERED ME SOME COFFEE).

WHAT’S THE STRUCTURE OF FUTURE WITH WILL IN AFFIRMATIVE FORM?

SUBJECT + WILL + VERB IN INFINITIVE + COMPLEMENTSHE WILL EAT AT MCDONALDS.

Notice that “will” can be contracted in the personal pronouns. For example: we will= we’ll.

This cannot happen with names and it is informal.

Notice that “will NOT” can be contracted in ONE WORD. For example: we wiLL NOT = WE WON’T.it is informal.
