From The Dean...

As a student at General Seminary, I lived for three years in a Manhattan apartment in which every window had an unobstructed view of the Empire State Building. From its broad base, towering over Fifth Avenue, to the seasonally lighted dirigible dock at the top, this iconic structure was a constant source of awe and delight.

During this time I worked at Trinity Church whose signature soar-ing spire at the head of Wall Street was the tallest structure in New York City until the 1890’s.

Three short blocks from Trinity stood the utilitarian twin towers of the World Trade Center complex.

These geometric towers were not as beautiful to me as Trinity or Empire State, but they were very important visual landmarks when negotiating the winding maze of Greenwich Village which lies in between! Every time I have returned to lower Manhattan since 9/11, I feel noticeably disoriented by their absence.

Architecture distills the values of the society from which it springs. From the Pyramids of Giza to the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, evocative structures command our attention focus our gaze.

Now that the repairs are completed, and the scaffolding has been removed, we have a fresh new look at our own stunning worship space. Our forebears have blessed us with both a Chapel and Cathedral that, by their very design, tell the story of our faith.

The dome evokes the vast heavens while the flowers and vines in the windows and walls below ground us in the fruits of the earth. The Altar rises to the place where heaven and earth meet with the four Evangelists at its base and the Archangels keeping watch from above.

On this holy table, the gifts of God’s people; alms, bread and wine, are presented, blessed and returned to us that we may be nourished by Jesus’ body and blood, and our ministry sustained by the contributions of the faithful.

It is my solemn prayer that your heart is full of rejoicing in these festive days of Eastertide; that God will put you in mind of the richness of His blessings in all the corners of your life, and that this historic Cathedral Parish will continue to rise to the challenge set before us: to open our hands in gratitude and generosity that our work and wit-ness on behalf of the risen Lord may continue to thrive.

Support the Mission!

We continue to collect non-perishable foods and disposable paper products: plates, cups, etc. (plastic is ok), toilet paper, paper towels, napkins) for

the New Orleans Mission. The food is distributed from the New Orleans Mission Food Bank and the paper products are used each day in the

Mission’s feeding ministry. Drop food and paper products off at church in the back of the cathedral or chapel.

Many thanks for your support!

Greetings from Advent House:The Advent House Book Group is inter-generational and participants are male and female. The next book we will be discussing is a book that comes highly recommended by one of our participants, Dick Moreland. I am sure most of you remember on October 2, 2006 when Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the Amish Schoolhouse near Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania and killed five and wounded five Amish children. Do you remember also the amazing response of the Amish community in the midst of the tragedy? Amish Grace by Donald Kraybill, Steven Nolt and David Weaver-Zecher. recounts the tragedy, the response of the community and offers information that will inform you and dispel many myths about the Amish.

The book is a good read and will lend itself to a lively discussion. I have ordered four copies from Amazon. Let me know if you need a copy. The Book Group will begin discussing the book on Monday, April 15 from 1 to 2:30. Come for all of our discussions or drop in when you can. No advance registration is needed. Any questions call Linda Nelson at Advent House 504-895-0553 or email at lhn@aristotle.net.

For you Advent House offers the following:

THE BOOK CLUB: Meets on Mondays from 1 to 2:30. We will begin discussing the book Amish Grace on Monday, April 15th. See above for more information..

ADVENT HOUSE, GOSPEL STUDY:Advent House will continue to offer scripture study twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays at 6:00 PM. Dick Moreland will convene the study group. This series will again look at the Gospels for the upcoming Sunday:

April 11 John 21:1-19April 25 John 13: 31-35

Bring a sack lunch or go to the corner Grocery or the Fresh Market. Water and coffee will be provided. Advent House will remain open to visitors until 5:00 PM each Thursday. No reservation is need-ed. Call Linda at 504-895-0553 if more information is needed.

NEEDED FOR A GOOD HOME: SEWING MACHINES

All Souls’ Episcopal Church and Community Center in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward is start-ing “Sit & Sew” classes. The Sit & Sew classes will offer entry-level lessons in the sewing arts for adults & children 15 and up. These courses are for beginners, with instructions on how to use their sewing machines, learning how to do hand stitching, basic sewing or learning shortcuts to tech-niques they may already know. It’s also a good class for people who sew but need motivation to do so.

A few machines are available at the Community Center, but very few registrants own their own machine. Sewing is a skill that lasts a lifetime, and can be both a money-saver and money-earner. If you have a sewing machine gathering dust, this is a worthy project that could put it to good and proper use! Carolina Gallop, the Administrative Assistant at All Souls’ is also a fashion designer and the volunteer teacher for “Sit & Sew.” She says tune-ups and repairs are no problem, if you have a machine to donate to their group. For more information, please call Carolina at 504-218-8995 or on her cell at 504-931-7779.

Visitors to the Cathedral are often surprised by our Coffee Hour. You can help us keep up our reputation for great hospitality by volunteering to host Coffee Hour one Sunday. Drinks are provided by the church and volunteers provide their choice of food. Host with a friend or two. If you have no time to shop and prepare food, financial donations are always gladly accepted.

For additional information/volunteer, contact Kathy Boyd, 891-1360 or kboydaj@yahoo.com.

Our recent coffee hour hosts:Les and Linda Bradfield, Meryl and Boyd Fink, Liam and Sarah Whalen, Betty Foster, and the Hospitality Committee. Please sign up today in Stuart Hall - there are plenty of open dates from which to choose.

Holy BaptismHoly Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saints’ Day or the Sunday after All Saints’ Day, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany). It is recommended that, as far as possible, Baptisms be reserved for these occasions or when a Bishop is present. (BCP, page 312).

Our next opportunity for baptism is the 4th Sunday of Easter, April 21. Please contact Canon Roberts for more information.
