AerotropolisUrban plan in which the layout, infraestructure, and economy is centeredon an airport, existing as an airport city. It is similar in form and function to a traditional metropolis, which contains a central city core and its commuter-linked suburbs.

Dr. John D. Kasarda, 2000

USA population 313 millions and 503 civil airports (19.000)

Europe population 740 millions and 610 civil airports

China population 1,331 billions and 182 civil airports

But…

Number of American airports with more than 2 million users per year: 62Number of Chinese airports with the same amount of users: 43

In addition, Beijing, the largest Chinese air hub, boards almost twice as many passengers as Atlanta, the largest US hub. China's airport network therefore comes close to equaling that of the United States in terms of major airport hubs. And it is important to understand the broader context: the US passenger railway network is undeveloped compared to China's extensive railway network, which also includes a growing number of high-speed lines.

Chinese airports under construction: 82

Methodology

Literature review Collect evidence/ data Case study: New SongDo, (South

Korea) Analysis Conceptual Description of The Non

City as an hypothesis for social and Design studies.

Does it have history? Does it have Identity? Does promote human relationships?

… Is it sustainable? Is the Aerotropolis a big scale scenario of a Non Place?

And if it is, how does it serve to the population and the planet, or is it only a massive tool for big corporation’s profit. Is it all about stimulating the economy, no matter how inconvenient that will be for the rest of the citizens?
