Hello!
At our January meeting, we were presented with a gift card courtesy of Bob Taylor from McWane Plumbing Group to give away as a door prize. We will be continuing this thru the May meeting. Please be sure to get a ticket when signing in at the door for a chance to win! If anyone else is interested in providing a door prize, you may bring it to the meeting and we will draw multiple winners that evening.
On January 27th, the Michigan ASSE Chapter held their Annual Awards Banquet. Anyone who has planned an event for 100+ people know the challenges which come with it, and despite the challenges, I truly enjoy this event. This year the attendees, in addition to the Michigan ASSE Chapter board members, included representatives from ASPE Eastern Michigan Chapter, NSF, The Plumbing Industry Training Center, MCA Detroit, R.L.
the Ohio ASSE Chapter, and the family of John E. Matthews. In addition to the attendees, we were grateful to those who became an event sponsor but could not attend. (Refer to the banquet photos for display of sponsors)
Congratulations to the award winners for this year:

FEBRUARY DESIGN CLASSTOPIC: Steam Design
FEBRUARY TECHNICAL PROGRAMTOPIC: How to Scare People and Make Them Run from Buildings using only the Steam Piping System
Presenter: Norm Hall R. L. Deppmann
Many people startle from sleep when things go bump in the night. As plumbing and piping engineers we can do better than that. We can have them running in fear from any building using steam piping systems! Maybe we want that client or customer to
use us again so let’s look how to avoid making them concerned. This presentation will focus on the proper piping of steam distribution systems and application of steam products to avoid noise, damage, or much worst. Join us for “Proper Mechanical Room Steam Piping”
Mr. Hall is President of the R.L. Deppmann Company. He has been with the company for more than 40 years and in that time has held positions in estimating, engineering, sales, and leadership. He is a member of the Eastern Michigan Chapter of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers, which presented him with the 2007 John E. Matthews Engineer of the Year Award. Norm is also a Past President of the ASHRAE-Detroit Chapter and a past president of the ITT Fluid Handling Representatives Association. Hello from your VP Tech!
First of all, let’s extend a big THANK YOU to our tabletop and event sponsors last month:
January Meeting: Balfrey & Johnston, Burke Agency, Taggart Knight, Performance Engineering, and Major Lozuaway!
Our January meeting started with a Design presentation from Mike Melaragni and Paul Baker on Subsoil Drainage. In
class was about dealing with the storm drainage that gets collected below the surface. Chapter 11 of the Michigan Plumbing Code (MPC) was reviewed. One big take-away was that we should make sure not to use typical DWV piping for the discharge of the sump pump, since this is a pressurized line and DWV piping is not meant for pressurized systems. Also, always be sure to check the location of the subsoil drains in relation to footings (see MPC Section 307.5). Subsoil drains are typically laid out outside of the building’s perimeter walls, in one continuous run of pipe. If you have a high water table, you should have intermediate piping connecting the perimeter loop inside the footprint. You can also have a bleeder drain through spread footings to an interior loop. You should install cleanouts in subsoil drains, though no required by code. They can’t be rodded out, but they can be jet cleaned. Subsoil drainage piping is pitched, but minimally. Before you can even start designing this very empirically based system, you need to know the water table so you will need the soils reports from recent borings. Although the information to design the system is a collaborative effort between Civil and Plumbing engineers, it is typically the plumber who will install; plumbing permits cover subsoil drainage.
Our main event was a panel discussion about water heaters. Mark Lamberson moderated 8 different water heater representatives from manufacturer’s reps and manufacturer’s. Our panel members included:
• Chris Anderson, Eemax Water Heaters
• Sean Clarke, Hubbel Heater Company
• Alan Deal, Performance Engineering
• Jim Hoover, PVI Industries
• Jason Loverich, Lochinvar
• Mike Ostrowski, Major Lozuaway
• Paul Prentice, R.L. Deppmann
• Tom Zimmerman, The Burke Agency
Mark lead the speakers through many topics about water

ASPE Eastern Region 2 Road Trip continued
It is always a pleasure and an honor to be asked to speak to ASPE chapters. I wish I could say yes to all the invites I am lucky enough to receive. This January I spoke to our Greater Toronto Area (aka the GTA) chapter.
The meeting turnout was good. Quite honestly, more people attended than I thought, especially during a day of light snow. Of course, ASPE members in the northern areas of the US and Canada are conditioned for this weather.
The meeting started with a short, 5 minute presentation on “Who Here is a Member of ASPE?” It begins with thanking those that
• Endless networking opportunities
• Personal and professional growth
•
• Ability to earn CEUs at all educational events
• Local chapter technical meetings
• Conventions and symposiums
• Scholarship programs
• Leadership opportunities
• ASPE Journal
• 60+ local chapters
• Special-interest groups like
» ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) » Women of ASPE (WOA)
• Plumbing Engineering Design Handbooks
• ASPE Pipeline
• Plumbing Engineer magazine
• Plumbing Engineering and Design Tables App
• Discounts on ASPE programs and services
The presentation then wraps up explaining how to join. I counted at least three people in the audience that we interested in joining. I was further inspired when three manufactures stayed afterwards and asked me for a copy of the presentation so they could deliver the membership message to the engineering, contractor, and inspector communities they call on.
I tip my winter hat to the GTA chapter, and especially to Brian Young P.Eng, for being such wonderful hosts. But then again, could anyone envision a Canadian friend not being kind and gracious? I believe it is in their blood.
I want to close in mentioning how happy I am to have been awarded the WOA membership drive winner. I look forward to using this money to further the growth and activities of the WOA.

8 FEBRUARY 2018
VP Education Report
Last night, I had the tremendous honor of receiving the John A. Matthews Engineer of the Year Award at the ASSE awards banquet. This is a very deeply personal award to me and I cannot express my grati-tude to all those involved in helping me accomplish this achievement. In that group is my wife, Rachelle, and our three kids, Abigail, Lauren and Nicholas. It was dif-
without getting emotional and I purposely breezed past their names because of this. I would like to thank them now, though, for picking up the slack I leave behind when I am working on a presentation, traveling, or performing the work of the chapter. I couldn’t do this without them.
I also wanted to express my sincere gratitude for all of those involved in January’s water heater panel discussion. To the panel members, I would like to thank you for your time in working with me on the subject matter and for making your way to the training center to take part in the discussion. Your discussion was second to none. To the attendees, I thank you for being engaged and making the evening interactive.
I hope everyone found it to be worthwhile. The board members can’t provide you with a great program unless we roll up our sleeves and take on new or challenging ideas, like panel discus-sions and off-site meetings. Please reach out to us and let us know your opinion on our sessions. We would love to hear from you, and we review every comment received as we put the next season’s program together.
Finally, February 22nd brings a new and exciting event to my calendar. During the Technical Symposium in Montre-al, I met an engineer in training that described how he and his peers felt that there is an information gap related to con-structability within their designs. I have put on many pre-sentations on this exact topic in our area, so I extended the invitation to his group, but this time the venue will shift to Limbach’s facility in Columbus, Ohio. While I have been working on the presentation, and several props that will travel with me to demonstrate some of the topics, the AYP’s in Ohio have been working on arranging coach buses to travel to Columbus from different regions in the state. They have truly turned this into a statewide event. Our Colum-
everyone and provide conference space and shop tours and demonstrations to provide the learning opportunity that we discussed in Montreal. Please keep us in your thoughts as we all travel to Columbus and try to make this a successful event.
Also, if you have any questions about how the contractors
me. The smallest things that we take for granted every day could be the “Aha” moment that someone else is looking for. For example, one of the organizers said it would be great to have a discussion on how we install plumbing in masonry walls. I am so used to this that I never even recog-nized the value in its discussion. There is still time for me to modify the presentation, so I would appreciate any input.
I hope to see you at this month’s Design and Technical Ses-sions. Thank you!
