T his summer while in England I attended a lecture titled "A Christian Interpretation of Islam" by the Rev. Christopher Lamb, one
of the foremost Christian leaders in Muslim-Christian relations in Europe. Rev. Lamb said that in the 21st century it is a necessary part of Christian discipleship that we know how to assess other faiths -- particularly Islam. He pointed to two scriptures which can help to give both impetus and guidance in this part of our discipleship: 1) “Love your neighbor” (Mark 12:31) and 2) "Do not bear false witness" (Ex 20:16). We do indeed have Muslim neighbors and neighbors of various other faiths here in Lubbock. These communities are growing and it is impor-tant that we act as good neighbors to them. One way you can do that is by accepting with me a special invitation to attend the Annual Inter-faith & Intercultural Dialogue and Friendship Dinner on Oct. 13th at 6:30 p.m. at Texas Tech University's Frazier Alumni Pavilion. This year's speaker will be Rev. Dirk Ficca, Executive Director of the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions. He will be speaking on the theme "Antidote to Extremism." A good meal and warm friendship around the table is also always a part of this occasion. The event is free and open
to all with advanced RSVP to Atilla@TheDialogueInstitute.org. We know that not all faiths are the same. Our faith tradition differs from that of others in substan-tive and profound ways. As Rev. Lamb said in his lecture this summer, "Christians cannot say Mu-hammed was a prophet and mean what Muslims mean." Yet with over half the population of the world either Christian or Muslim it is imperative that we reach beyond our differences in efforts of peacemaking and friendship. Many of you were at church on Sunday as we baptized a young woman born into another culture and religion who made her profession of faith in Christ. Surely her face was filled with the "inexpressible glorious joy" of Christ as she made her profession of faith "Jesus is Lord." And today the thought occurs to me that moment might not have happened had we not first welcomed her, accepted her on her own terms, and made a place for her as a friend. Can we do this? Can we both accept and seek to understand others on their own terms while at the same time sharing with them our own faith? My thought is, in the 21st century we not only can, but we must.
