HIGHLIGHTS

INTRODUCTION

With recent advances in optics and computing and advent of flexible electronic like liquid crystal display can allow back ground image to be displayed on the material itself.

Although more encumbering and complicated than Harry Potter’s invisibility.

However it is acool piece of technology with manyinteresting applications

WHAT IS OPTICAL CAMOUFLAGE ?

Camouflage is the concealment of otherwise visible objects by any method or combination of methods that allows them to remain unnoticed.

Optical camouflage is a hypothetical type of active camouflage .

It altogether renders invisibility by slipping beneath the shining, silvery cloth.

PRINCIPLE INVOLVED

By projecting background image on to the masked object, you can observe the masked object just as if it were virtually transparent.

The concept is to create the illusion of invisibility by covering an object with something that projects the scene directly behind that object.

Uses RETRO REFLECTIVE PROJECTION TECHNOLOGY(RPT)

KEY TECHNIQUES OF RPT

Three key techniques of RPT are the followings:

1. To use an object covered by retro-reflective material as a screen

2. Make the projector's iris as small as possible (by using a pinhole).

3. To place a projector into a position optically

conjugated with the observer's eye by using a halfmirror.

Requirements For Invisibility…

1. CLOAK

The cloak is made from a special material known as retro-reflective material creating a SPECULAR REFLECTION, is in which incident light rays and reflected light rays form the exact same angle with the mirror surface.

It creates an illusion of invisibility by acting like a screen. Covered with thousands of small beads They bounce the light rays exactly in the same direction as that of incident angle.

2. VIDEO CAMERA

It caputres the background image.

Note: For easier illustration of working we had used these common known images, in real time optical Camouflage the device size will be smaller than that of actual size like spy cams, tablets

The video camera is placed behind the person wearing the cloak.

3. COMPUTER

To capture the image from the video camera

Note: For easier illustration of working we had used these general images, in real time optical Camouflage the device size will be smaller than that of actual size like spy cams, tablets

It will add some Graphics to the received video

HOW IT WORKS ?

Hardware/software(calculation of

approximate perspective simulation,transformation)

captured image(video

camera)

Projected (on to the cloak)

Synthesize graphics

Superimpose on to the Real world

4. PROJECTOR

It projects the modified image onto the cloak.

A projector accomplishes this task by shining a light beam through an opening controlled by a device called an iris diaphragm.

An iris diaphragm is made of thin, opaque plates.

Turning a ring changes the diameter of

the central opening

Note: For easier illustration of working we had used these common known images, in real time optical Camouflage the device size will be smaller than that of actual size like spy cams, tablets

5. COMBINER

The system requires a special mirror that both :

Reflects the projected image toward the cloak and

Lets the light rays bouncing off the cloak return to the user's eye.

This special mirror is called a

beam splitter, or a combiner.

It should be properly positioned in front of user’s eye.

Head Mounted Displays

Optical see-through displays look like high-tech goggles providing a display and optics for each eye.

Video see-through displays use video-mixing technology to combine the images from a head-worn camera with computer-generated graphics.

Applications

• Mutual Tele-Existance• Used For Military Purposes• Used For Medical Purpose• Using in Aeroplanes• Using in Cars• Creating Windows for Windowless Rooms

Military Applications

Medical Applications

Doctors performing surgery could use optical camouflage to see through their hands and instruments to the underlying tissue.

In Aeroplanes

Pilots landing a plane could use this technology to make cockpit floors transparent. This would enable them to see the runway and the landing gear simply by glancing down.

In Cars and Lorries

Drivers backing up cars could benefit one day from optical camouflage. A quick glance backward through a transparent rear would make it easy to know when to stop.

Windows for a Windowless Rooms

By Placing the Projector on the wall we can create a movable window i.e we can place this window where ever we wish

Conclusion

Each technology has its own pace of development.

This technology is still at development reasearch work is going on and soon we have astonishing results.

It should be used in the right application so that it can be explored in a better way so it can be useful for the human life.
