Alexander Rokoff Painting Workshops “I teach a straightforward approach to all aspects of
painting still lifes, figures and portraits in oil. I work
with students ranging from absolute beginners who are
convinced they can’t paint, to professionals looking to
polish their skill set. Workshops are small to ensure
plenty of individual attention.”

Alexander Rokoff is a contemporary figurative painter currently dividing his time between studios at the
Falcon Art Community and in Astoria, Oregon. He was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he worked
under various artists and became fluent in multiple 2 and 3 dimensional disciplines. This path led to a
painting style that is both sculptural and painterly. Rokoff’s central focus has always been the figure. It is
here that he explores the language of gesture and expression and creates imagery that is evocative and
timeless.
Rokoff recently returned from an ongoing apprenticeship in Norway and France with renowned figurative
painter Odd Nerdrum. Rokoff’s works have been exhibited in Beverly Hills, CA. New York, Paris, Santa
Fe, Taos, Mexico, Central and South America. Rokoff;s works have appeared in John Carpenter’s film
“Vampires” as well as the TV series Portlandia and Grimm. Rokoff Studio was recently mentioned in the
Huffington Post as one of three places to study representational painting on the west coast. In 2012,
Rokoff was one of five recipients of the Calligram Falcon Fellowship.

The Liberators
John Breen & Nicholas Kessler The Liberators offer three levels of classes in long-form
improvisation. The beginning level focuses on acceptance,
listening, editing, scene initiation, commitment and group
mind – taught by Nicholas Kessler. The intermediate level
introduces finding and heightening the game, making
strong choices, calling back and support – taught by John
Breen. The advanced class moves into mastering the game
and callbacks, enhanced support work, individual feedback
and creating an energy-packed long-form set – taught by
John Breen.
Eligibility to progress from level to level is dependent on
staff approval. Most students must complete each level at
least twice.
Sketch comedy writing class is taught by John Breen,
where he emphasizes originality rather than formula.
Pushing the game, unbridled heightening, character
subtlety, keeping it short & sweet and rewriting are the
hallmarks to Breen’s approach.
“The Liberators, an irreverent, raucous, long form
improve group, has gained quite a cult following…their
comedy will leave you in tears from belly-aching
laughter.” – PDXLive
“The Liberators basically put Portland on the Comedy
Map.” – Portland Men’s Journal

Ben Darwish Piano Workshops
“Time, touch, taste, imagination, work ethic, a nefarious sense of humor
and an all-round good hang -- in regards to the chair, I think that pretty
much covers it with Ben.” -Gino Vannelli
Keyboardist/composer/leader Ben Darwish is an important part of
the nationally-recognized music scene in his native Portland,
Oregon. Just as well known for his indie-jazz work as well as
straight-ahead jazz, funk, afro-beat and pop, he leads and plays in
bands who work in all of those genres. Darwish has also created
high-concept shows such as “Afrobeat Tribute to Michael Jackson”
and “Live band vs. Ohmega Watts”(band vs. DJ).
Darwish leads a progressive jazz trio, a ten-piece funk and afro-beat ensemble, "Commotion”, and is currently
immersed in a new project with Shook Twins, called “Morning Ritual”, that incorporates folk, jazz, and other
elements. He has made several recordings as a leader and a sideman. He also plays solo concerts on both
acoustic and electric pianos (he is fluent on all keyboards) and currently plays with vocalist Reva DeVito,
electro-pop artist Onuinu, and the band led by sought-after bassist Damian Erskine. He has toured with Gino
Vannelli, the million-selling pop/soul/rock singer and songwriter, another musician who also crosses all genres.
Darwish has also performed with other renowned musicians such as Reggie Watts, Thara Memory, and bassist
John Clayton.
Darwish began playing as a small child, nearly as soon as he could reach the keyboard. He received a Bachelor
of Music in 2007 from the University of Oregon and was awarded "Outstanding Undergraduate Performer in
Jazz Studies”. In 2008, he received a Downbeat Award for Outstanding Big Band Performance. He was the
winner of the 2010 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award for his composition “Under The Bright Red Sky” and
received the 2011 Individual Artist Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission.
He experienced a very rewarding stay as an artist-in-resident at Oregon's Caldera Arts to compose new works
and has performed at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s internationally recognized Time Based Art
Festival two years in a row. In 2012, he was successful in raising over $10,000 through US Artists to record the
first Morning Ritual album, “The Clear Blue Pearl”, featuring Shook Twins. Most recently, he won a 2013
project grant from Regional Arts and Culture Council to produce his new multimedia performance piece, “The
Lonely Night”. He is endorsed by Nord and Moog keyboards. For more information and performance dates,
please visit www.bendarwish.com.
