SHIFTING PARADIGMS: FROM BRAIN TO PRACTICEPresentation on information processing and cultural competence by Dr. Luis Ruiquelme, Brooklyn NY

Information Processing

Working Memory models: information goes from short term to long term memory

Neuroplasticity How the brain encodes experiences and

learns. The brain can form new connections

throughout life. A damaged brain can relearn in response to

rehabilitation.

Neuroplasticity Principles for learning

Use it or lose it! Use it and improve it! Repetition and intensity matter

What is culture ?

Culture as described by Richard Brislin: anthropologist Collectivist vs. Individualist Views of time, space, individual space Language, communication styles Roles in society (gender, elders) Importance of work Class & Status Beliefs and Values

How can I have more “cultural competence”?

Knowledge, Skills, Attitude Awareness, Application and Advocacy Cultural Humility

Respectful, client centered, flexibility

Thank You Ruth

Seminar Issues

Zapping can still happen – simply sign the student up for the next few weeksThe bells at 1335 and 1405 are for students movement.

Only those changing classes can move at this time (and this is the only time students can move between teachers).

Bathroom breaks, trips to get a battery, etc. should be done o.

Leave for the Holidays

Apply early There may be a shortage of subs during

the Winter holidays. For the last two days before the break

approval will have to come from district.

Inclement Weather

If it is a delay, then school will start at 1000. This does not mean you report at 1000. You report as soon as you can safely travel. You do not report to school if the entire base is closed. Important to make certain your phone number is accurate.

We will test the emergency roster in the next few days. Make sure you have it at home.

Nuts and Bolts

Paper – Do not waste Doors and windows need to be closed

and locked Please make contact with parents of

students that are struggling in your classes for the walk-in time after lunch Friday.
