Exigent: The Spirit Filled Life

“If you love me, you

will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him …

… because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:15-18

For a Christian, one of the most

incredible truths is that God – the living, eternal God – chooses to live

inside of you. God has actually placed His Holy Spirit inside of you.

Romans 5:5“God has poured out his love into

our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.”

II Cor. 1:22 “He [God] set His seal of ownership

on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing

what is to come.”

Galatians 4:6 “God sent the Spirit of His

Son into our hearts.”

I Cor. 2:12 We have … received … the

Spirit who is from God.”

Colossians 1:27“… the glorious riches of this

mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Romans 8:9

“the Spirit of God lives in you.”

I Cor. 3:16 “you yourselves are God’s temple

and God’s Spirit lives in you.”

Romans 8:11“the Spirit of Him who

raised Jesus from the dead is living in you …”

II Cor. 13:5 Do you not realized that Christ Jesus is in you?.”

Hebrews 13:5“because God has said: Never

will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Matthew 28:20“And surely I [Christ] am with you

always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus Christ promised – and the rest of the New Testament describes – that God actually places His very presence in the lives of believers.

If you have a relationship with Christ, God Himself lives inside you

by His Spirit.

The reality is that although all Christians are indwelled with the Holy Spirit, not all Christians are

filled (directed/empowered) with the Spirit. “

Ephesians 5:18“Do not get drunk with wine, which

leads to debauchery, instead be filled with the Spirit.” “

What does it mean to be “filled with the Spirit”?

  To be filled implies:

- directed- empowered- controlled - yielded

How are we filled

(directed/empowered) with the Spirit?

CONFESSED SIN

Psalm 66:18“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.”“

I John 1:9“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins.”

Psalm 139:27,28“Search me, O God, and know my

heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any

offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”“

James 5:16“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each

other so that you may be healed ….”“

A YIELDED LIFE

Romans 12:1“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your

bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual

act of worship.”

II Corinthians 10:5 “We take captive every thought to

make it obedient to Christ.”

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things

will be given to you as well.”

The New Testament uses several terms for being filled with the Spirit:

walking in the Spiritbeing led by the Spirit

living by the Spirit

Key concept: yielding by faith

“Now I am going to Him who sent me, yet none of you asks me,

‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are

filled with grief …”

“… But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the

Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to

you.” John 16:5-7
