Equipment Equipment
It is important to be comfortable with all of your equipment, so practice with it and try your racing outfit prior to race day. Race in what you feel comfortable wearing.
Triathlon rules state that your torso must be covered during the bike and run leg, so a singlet, bather top or t-shirt is essential. People often race in bathers and/or bike/tri shorts, but you will also see some participants wearing board shorts and a tank top.
It is important to dress according to the weather, e.g. if it is hot, race in a singlet, bathers, and/or shorts and a hat for the run.
If it is cold stay warm before and after the race with your race gear underneath.
Triathlon specific suits are available which are
well fitted all in one Lycra suits, with slightly
padded buttocks for comfort on the bike.
Swim Gear
Subject to Triathlon Australia Technical Rules you may be able to wear a wetsuit for more protection from the cold water (if < 19°C AND confirmed by the Race Director on the day).
If you are intending on wearing a wetsuit ensure you swim in it prior to the race; they do take some getting used to and need to be fitted correctly.
Triathlon wetsuits are designed for swimming and are different to that of a surf wetsuit.
Swim goggles are recommended and help
with sighting the large swim buoys. It is worth
purchasing a pair for use in training and
during the race.
Bike Gear
The trick with a bike is to make sure you only
purchase what you really need. It is very easy
to get excited as there is some great gear out
there. If you are purchasing a bike, go to a
reputable bike shop to ensure you obtain
necessary and correctly fitted equipment. A
helmet is compulsory for racing and training
and must meet Australian Standards (a sticker
will display this on the inside of the helmet).
You need to have a drink bottle and holder on
your bike as well as a pump and a puncture
repair kit. Sunglasses will protect your eyes
from sun and dust in the air, especially on a
windy day. Tri-bars and cycling shoes, though
not essential, can be a good investment for
comfort, speed, power optimisation and
aerodynamics, but both will take some
practice.
Running Gear
A good pair of correctly fitted running shoes is essential.
Running shoes are technically advanced these days, so it is important to go to a reputable shoe store to have your foot assessed and measured correctly.
A hat and sunglasses will also be useful on a hot day.
Finally, elastic laces are fantastic for racing as
you can set them at a good tension and just
pull your shoe on. They are not
recommended for training as they don’t
provide as much support as regular laces.

Race Day
Arrive Early We recommend arriving at least an hour prior
to race start to ensure you have adequate
preparation time.
Please check your Race Day information sheet
and all venue signs to ensure you know the
location of entry and exit points.
Bike Transition Area
Before entering the bike transition area you
must have your helmet fastened for
inspection. Mountain Bikes with stands may
free stand in the allocated area.
The transition area can be a very busy place
so it is important to TAKE CARE and be
respectful of others and their property.
Pre Race Briefing
All participants should assemble for the pre
race briefing at least 15 minutes prior to the
race scheduled commencement.
It is important that all participants attend the
race briefing for an update on the event.
There could be last minute changes to the
event from the police or council or as a result
of weather conditions.
Security
Participants will not be permitted to enter
into the bike area to collect their gear until
the last competitor has commenced the run.
NO EXCEPTIONS will be made to this rule.
Only competitors (no spectators) are allowed
into the transition area.
Your competitor wristband must be on at all
times during the race, from the time you
arrive until the time you pick up your bike
from the compound at the completion of the
event. Please ensure that you are still wearing
your wristband when you are collecting your
bike.
Swim Leg
If you get into any trouble during the swim
leg please signal the lifeguards by raising one
arm straight up in the air and calling for
assistance. This is a clear and recognised
signal, other actions may be misinterpreted.
Cycle Leg
Do not forget to fasten your helmet before
running your bike along the cycle lane to the
bike exit. Upon returning you must dismount
from your bike before entering transition
(dismount lane) and then return your bike
along the cycle lane to your allocated bike
rack. Only then are you permitted to take off
your helmet. Please note that all competitors
must complete the cycle and run with a
covered torso.
Note: iPods, MP3 players or headphones are
NOT permitted during the event.
