1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge conventions of real media products?
Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. They are:
1) Music video's demonstrate genre characteristics (eg: stage, performance in mental video, dance routines for a boy/girl band)
2) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)
3) There is a relationship between music and visuals, (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)
4) The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)
5) There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6) There is often inter-textual reference (to films, TV programs, other music video's etc)
7) Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based and how elements of each is used in it.
1) MUSIC VIDEO'S DEMONSTRATE GENRE CHARACTERISTICS (EG: STAGE, PERFORMANCE IN MENTAL VIDEO, DANCE ROUTINES FOR A BOY/GIRL BAND)
- Expensive luxury items such as cars or jewellery for hip-hop/ RnB music videos. Provocative women will also usually feature in the video.

This is not evident throughout my video, meaning that I challenged the genre characteristics. Instead of having materialistic items and provocative women, I wanted to focus on portraying happy, young and carefree actors within my video. Due to this the actors would not need to focus on showing off their expensive items.
2) THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS, (EITHER ILLUSTRATIVE, AMPLIFYING, CONTRADICTING)

The cars move in the same time as the music's beat does.
Throughout the video, there isn’t many times where the relationship between music and visuals is clear.
4) THE DEMANDS OF THE RECORD LABEL WILL INCLUDE THE NEED FOR LOTS OF CLOSE UPS OF THE ARTIST CONFORMS
5) THERE IS FREQUENTLY REFERENCE TO NOTION OF LOOKING AND PARTICULARLY VOYEURISTIC TREATMENT OF THE FEMALE BODY.
There are many scenes which are meant to be seen as home videos, which are shown through a camera. Therefore there is frequent reference to the notion of looking. This could again build a stronger relationship between the artist and audience, as the idea of it being a home video gives the feel that the artist is inviting the audience into his/her life.

Also, from my audience research I found that most females that I questioned said they would prefer an attractive female rather than a provocative female.
6) THERE IS OFTEN INTER-TEXTUAL REFERENCE (TO FILMS, TV PROGRAMS, OTHER MUSIC VIDEO'S ETC)
Three is no inter-textual reference to films, TV programs, other music videos.

Some artists chose to refer to films that there song might be the soundtrack of. For example in Beyonce’s ‘Check on it’ she has scenes of the film Pink Panther (which she stars in).
I did not feel that I needed to cross-promote my artist as she has built her power base so high already.
EXAMPLES OF INTER-TEXTUAL REFERENCES: SOULJA BOY
7) WHETHER THE VIDEO IS PRIMARILY PERFORMANCE BASED, NARRATIVE BASED OR CONCEPT BASED AND HOW ELEMENTS OF EACH IS USED IN IT.
The video is mainly concept based. Although the areas which have the recording signs around, are meant to be showing the idea of the artist using home footage.
This way the artist is building a relationship with the audience, by bringing them into there personal life.
LOCATION
Edgware Road Southbank skate park
These are some examples of locations where we filmed our video. We chose areas which we knew were bright and colourful in order to match our planning.
PROPS
I had planned to involve props such as the commonly worn ‘Juicy bag’ in order to link to the genre characteristics of my sub-culture hip-hop. (materialistic items)
However, whilst filming I realised that I did not actually need to involve these aspects.
Therefore there was not many props used.

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Throughout the video, I wanted to show that the artist was a strong, independent, young women.
I challenged the typical genre characteristic of the sub-culture hip-hop which includes provocative women in minimal clothing.
Instead I presented the women as a successful artist, who has been recognised in the music scene as one of the 'most influential female rappers of all time.'
Therefore I kept this strong acknowledged individual throughout my production process of both the video and the album/advertisement.
Same look is given throughout the video, and on the album cover/posters. Eg: Nicki Minaj as a independent confident women
Similar:
-Hairstyle-Persona/ Body language-Facial expression- Close-ups and mid-shots for artist recognition. -Eye level camera and the notion of looking to build a relationship with the audience.- Plain background to draw focus to the
artist.- Make-up (simple with an emphasis on
the lips)
I kept a consistent theme of bright colours like pink and red which are associated with Nicki Minaj.
It is easy to tell that the music video and the cover/poster match. Due to the bright, fun colours etc.

3)How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluating stages?
RESEARCH
-Distinguish between codes and conventions
-Make relations to Andrew Goodwin’s theory
- Gave me access to music videos through Youtube
-Let me update my progress of my production, and be able to look at the developments and helped me stay in contact with my teacher and peers for consistent feedback.
- Gave me access to different advertisements/posters/album covers/ Digipak's
-Understand genre characteristics
-Helpful in gaining audience feedback
