CONCEPT PAPERFinancial assistance for dancers who have qualified to participate in an international dance competition.

1. The importance & relevance of the

proposed activity.

• To advance human achievement:

• For the past 7 years dancers from my dance school have qualified to participate in the World Hip Hop Championships. These championships were hosted by Germany from 2004-2010. This year Austria will be hosting the championships. 5 National competitions are held every year, and from this the top 3 dancers and groups per age category are selected to represent SA.

• “Exposure to experience” is essential in the world of the arts.

• The problem: Due to financial constraints, it is becoming increasingly difficult to send our dancers overseas. In the past we have received some assistance from companies such as SA Tourism, Postbank, and Mecer, however with the global economic slow down, such sponsorships are no longer coming in.

• In 2005 two of my dancers, Eugene Baloyi, and Dirkie Mostert, were crowned the World Champions in their duo section. The following year, Eugene Baloyi was crowned world champion in his solo section. This is no small feat, considering that The IDO World Hip Hop Championships is the only official, and the largest Hip Hop championship in the world. (33 countries and 3500 dancers participate.) For 5 consecutive years, Eugene has managed to maintain his world status.

• If Eugene and Dirkie were not given this opportunity, they would never have been able to benchmark themselves against the best from the rest of the world.

1. The importance & relevance of the

proposed activity.

Vision

• Studio Director:

• This is my 28th year of uninterrupted service in education and for 24 of those years I have

served as an educator at Irene Primary School. I was part of a team of educators who

worked towards the goal of a good education for all in a democratic South Africa. Much of

the work that I have done in my school and in my dancing school has been in support of

transformation. I am the head of Arts and Culture and also the Deputy Principal at Irene

Primary School. I have my own dancing school and I am the Vice President of the South

African Dance Teachers Association (SADTA) I was the recipient of the values in Education

award from the Department of Education in 2003.

• Vision

• One of the most important tasks of the Arts & Culture curriculum (as cited in the National

Curriculum Statement) is to "redress South Africa's legacy of cultural intolerance through

exposing the learners to and enabling them to learn about, the diversity of cultures in South

Africa." I embrace this task as one of my primary goals as an educator. While I have had

many things to celebrate in my 28-year teaching career, one of my biggest frustrations is still

the disparity between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'. It is a challenge that I face on a daily

basis in my desire to see that talented young people are not held back from fulfilling their

potential by a lack of resources.

• To encourage youngsters to participate in the arts, with the ultimate objective of participating at an international level. Over the past year, the morale of the dancers in SA has definitely dropped, as they see no future beyond local competitions. With your input, we will be able to show the youth that companies are indeed interested in the youth and their achievements, and this will encourage them to strive to be the best.

• The Hip Hop Culture is part of the “beat” of our youth. Dance classes keep the children constructively occupied, especially when they are training to compete at international level. The many hours that they would spend on the streets and in malls are now been used to prepare themselves for competitions. Dance classes also teach the dancers to respect their bodies and to live healthy lifestyles.

2. Objectives of the Project

• To develop important life skills which are vital to any youth growing up in South Africa:

• Commitment

• Dedication

• Perseverance

• Loyalty.

These are life skills that will go on to serve them in the Business and Commercial SA Industry.

In summary, Hip-Hop dance is an exciting form of expression which engages our youth, facilitates their interaction with others and helps them to make sense of their world. It provides a platform for communication and is a

source of hope, positively influencing and changing lives.

Challenges & Request

In the past we have received some funding from the Department of Education, the Department of

Arts & Culture and private institutions such as Standard Bank. While we are always grateful for

any support we receive, we have found funding difficult to obtain due to budget constraints and

funds already having been allocated to official corporate responsibility programmes. Despite the

sponsorships and donations we have received for past projects we have always had a shortfall

which has posed a threat to the projects. Any funds previously raised have been allocated, used

and audited.

Our Request:

• Dance is a universal language and a powerful medium to unify youth from all nations. Dance,

and Hip Hop in particular, is where the youth live and one of the leading ways in which they

engage with one another and the world around them.

• The International Dance Organisations (IDO) is the official stage shared by youth from all

over the world and South Africa has been centre-stage in many of the events. In order to

sustain this momentum and to strengthen our international position we need to support the

dancers who have consistently shown dedication but who lack the resources to compete

internationally.
