“Students are the Regions and Sections Future Volunteers”

Benefits to Regions/Sections

Students begin to understand how IEEE works for engineers and what resources are available

Students are retained as members after graduation

Students learn to become active IEEE Section and Region Volunteers

“Many current IEEE members started as Student members!”

What are some of the things you have

done?

How Do You Build the Relationship?

• Encourage Student-Professional Awareness Activities among student branches

• Identify good local speakers• Provide discounted rates for students

attending Section and Region events• Encourage members to organize and attend

joint professional awareness activities• Support student events

Some Specifics

• Communication– Make contact, not all branches know

Some Specifics

• SPAC/S-PAVe

• Joint venture S-PAC/Professional Development Seminar

What are S-PACs?• Student-Professional Awareness

Conferences• Students plan and run the event with

consultation from S-PAC Regional Coordinators - The students do all Project Management

• Presentation or panel format related the professional awareness categories

• Topics are selected by students in consultation with SPAC Regional Coordinators (Regions 1-6) who will advise on finding speakers

What are S-PAVes? Student-Professional Awareness Ventures Venture can take on any form except

presentation format Student Branch submits proposal based on

the professional awareness categories with budget and schedule - The students do all Project Management

Start-up funds are available to initiate venture

Examples of S-PAVe Formats

Mock Interviews Resume Writing Skill Development Role Playing and Videotaping of an

Ethical Dilemma/Situation Networking/Etiquette Dining Creating a Skit Depicting Expert

Testimony in a Courtroom

S-PAC/S-PAVe Budget Considerations

Potential Income Sources

• Ticket Sales• Industry Donation• University• IEEE Local

Section/Region• RAB Subsidy (when

needed as a safety net)

• IEEE Societies/Chapters

Minimize Expenditures

• Forego spending on elaborate meals and refreshments

• No need for catering halls (large classrooms are fine)

Note that the SPAC Committee will pay for the approved National Speakers travel expenses, and are “off-budget” to the students planning process
