Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3
Dear Faith Family,
In this Sunday’s readings, the theme of casual prophecy is pretty evident. In the first reading, fromthe book of Amos, Amos is told by the priest to be a prophet outside the land of Judah. His reply isone that hits home for me, “I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets.”
Once when I was beginning my work in ministry, I attended a workshop with a couple of myfriends. The workshop was based around finding your charisms, or in other words, your gifts thatGod has given you through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. It was very interesting, and it involved a “MyersBriggs” style personality test.
While I was looking at the potential charisms (they ranged from administrative, voluntary poverty, teaching, etc.) there were some that just seemed overwhelming, and not at all dealing with mypersonality. When I received my test back, one of my top three was prophecy. I remember taking asecond look, because I could not believe it to be true.
As I worked in ministry longer, the gift that was given to me began to make sense. The idea of aprophet at first thought, for me, had everything to do with literally seeing a burning bush andhaving the most direct line to God ever. This was definitely not me, I thought. And being verysimilar to Amos, I felt that the task I was given was wrong.
As I grew more comfortable in my ministry though, I learned to understand that to be a prophet, issimply to share the beauty of our God, in whatever way God entrusts you. Although I wish I couldpart the Red Sea and turn sticks into snakes, God has given us the tougher task, to make disciplesof all nations.
Friends, I believe that we are all called to be prophets. We are all entrusted to share the good newsof Christ and the beauty of our faith. If this task seems rough to you, I agree with you completely. But the fruit is so profound! I would say it’s worth it.
It’s also nice knowing that our parish is filled with so many prophets. I am truly blessed to have somany role models of the faith within our wonderful church. Thankyou for everything that you do.
God Bless,
Brett BeckerYouth and Young Adult Minister
