BET empowers local entrepreneursMATTHEW SHELDON
The Breedekloof EmpowermentTrust (BET) recently gave 13 woodcutters the opportunity to createtheir own small business venturesby providing each of them with achain saw.
The BET is an initiative of BreedekloofWine and Tourism, a notforprofit company, which has been established to thebenefit of previously disadvantaged blackpersons living in Rawsonville, Goudini,Breede River and Slanghoek.
During the handover ceremony atSlanghoek Cellar in the Slanghoek Valley, each wood cutter also received safetygear, which includes a specially designed
pair of pants, helmet and gloves. Melody Botha, CEO of Breedekloof
Wine and Tourism, said the aim of the trustis for cellars from the area and other businesses to pay their Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Social EconomicDevelopment (SED) contributions into thetrust. In this way, the money can be generated to support local projects in the area.
“This is the first project that we havelaunched under the BET, whereby thewood cutters were donated with chainsaws for enterprise development.
“All the wood cutters received trainingfrom professionals before they were senthome with their equipment. They were also informed about all the safety tips andmeasures to take before cutting wood withthe chain saw,” said Botha. She added
that each chain saw costs roughly R8 000.Frederik Syster (39), a farm worker and
entrepreneur, told the Standard that he isthankful for the donation and is determined to use the equipment to further hisambition of establishing a small business. He expressed his gratitude towards thetrust and challenged them to continue toinspire and help other disadvantagedpeople in the area.
“I am a fulltime farm worker, but afterhours I go into the fields and cut downblack wattle trees into wood pieces andsell them to make extra money. It was difficult to do this before, because I never hadmy own equipment and had to borrow every time. Now I can focus on my businessand hopefully become my own boss,” saidSyster.
