Giant Panda
Common Name: Giant
panda
Green Turtles
Common Name: Green turtle; Tortue
comestible, tortue franche,
tortue verte
Size, Weight, WingspanGreenTurtleso Their weight is over 500 kgo The span of their forelimbs
is over 3m and the leatherback turtle can be over 2m long.
Giant Pandaso A large adult panda can
weigh about 220-330 pounds, with males 10 percent larger and 20 percent heavier than females.
o They are about five feet long from nose to rump, with a four to six inch tail.
Giant Panda
DietGiant Panda’s are classified as bears so they have the digestive system of a carnivore. They have a Vegeterian diet and moistly depend on bamboo as their food source. About 1% of their diet is made up of other meat & plants.
Often a panda will hunt for pikas and other small rodents.
Green
Turtle DietWhen less than 8 to 10 inches in length they eat worms, young crustaceans, aquatic insects, grasses and algae. Once green turtles reach 8 to 10 inches in length, they mostly eat sea grass and algae, the only sea turtle that is strictly herbivorous as an adult. Their jaws are finely serrated which aids them in tearing vegetation.
PopulationGiant Pandas
Less than 2,500 mature in the wild.
Population• Green Sea
turtles
Approx. 203,000 nesting females
Location• Giant Pandas
Giant pandas are located in Southwest
china to the east of the Tibetan plateau.
Location
• Green Turtles
Mediterranean Sea, Northeast Atlantic Shelf
Marine, Southern Australian Marine,
ect.
Reproduction of Marine
turtlesDistinguishing male green sea turtles
from females underwater is easy on the rare occasions that you encounter
members of the two sexes together. The males are the ones with the longer tails. But when seen alone, sexing the animals can be tricky and generally requires some
experience.
Interestingly, the sex of the offspring in all sea turtles is not determined when an egg is fertilized. Instead, the sex is determined by the temperature of the sand that surrounds the egg during incubation
The incubation period varies from 50 to 70 days. The eggs usually hatch at night and the newborns quickly scramble seaward.
Reproduction of Giant Pandas Giant PandasPandas are erroneously believed to be
poor breeders, an impression based on the disappointing reproductive performance of captive pandas. Wild panda populations involved in long-term studies are known to have reproductive rates comparable to those of some populations of American black bears, which are thriving.
o The reproductive rate is about one young every two years
o Gestation takes about 95 to 160 days and pandas normally give birth to single young (twins are born more frequently in captivity, when artificial insemination is used).
Climate• Green turtles
While green sea turtles spend most of their time in warmer
water, young turtles sometimes spend their
summers in New England waters.
• Giant Pandas
The climate is actually very similar to Scotland. The
climate in the mountains is temperate with abundant
rainfall and infrequent extremes of temperature
Taxonomic Groupings• Giant Pandas Phylum: Chorclata
Genus: Ailurpoda
Species: Melanoleuca
• Green TurtlesPhylum: Chordata
Genus: Chelonia
Species: C. mydas
