Background For The Teacher Endangered speciesarelivingthingsthreatenedwithextinction—thedyingoffofallorganismsoftheirkind.Today,humansarethebiggestthreattoothermammals.Humanshavecausedarapiddeclineinthenumberofmammalsinthewildforvariousreasons,includinghunting,trading,anddestructionofhabitats. Wildlifebiologistsusethreemainclassificationsforaspeciesthatfacespossibleextinction:(1)endangered,(2)threatened,and(3)rare.Endangeredspeciesfacethemostseriousthreatofextinction.Theirsurvivalisdepen-dentupondirecthumanprotection.Threatenedspeciesarestillnumerousinsomeareas,butstillfaceseriousdangersandareundergreatthreat.Rarespeciesarenotdeclining,buthavesmallpopulationsinafewprotectedenvironments. Eachspeciesofplantandanimalplaysanimportantpartinthebalanceofnature.Therefore,theextinctionofanyspeciesthreatensthesurvivalofotherlivingthings,includinghumans.Survivaloftheseanimalsisdependentupontheestablishmentandcarefulmanagementoflargenaturepreservesandparks.
