IntroductionThepurposeofthishandbookistoprovidetheElonUniversityphysicianassistantstudentwiththepoliciesandproceduresoftheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudies(DPAS).ThisinformationincludestheacademicandprofessionalstandardsandexpectationsreflectedinUniversityandProgrampolicies.AdherencetothesepoliciesisimportantforprogressionthroughtheprogramandtomaintainabeneficiallearningenvironmentforallmembersoftheDepartment.Allpoliciesinthishandbookareapplicabletostudentsinboththeacademicandclinicaleducationphases.

OverviewofPAprofessionandElonUniversityPAProgram

Physicianassistants(PA)arehealthcareprofessionalslicensedtopracticemedicinewithphysiciansupervision.PhysicianassistantsgraduatefromanaccreditedphysicianassistanteducationalprogramandarecertifiedbytheNationalCommissiononCertificationofPhysicianAssistants(NCCPA).Withinthephysician/PArelationship,physicianassistantsexerciseautonomyinmedicaldecision-makingandprovideabroadrangeofdiagnosticandtherapeuticservices.Thespecifictasksperformedbyindividualphysicianassistantsaredifficulttodelineatebecausevariationsexistbaseduponstatelawsaswellasothergeographic,economicandsocialfactors.Theclinicalroleofphysicianassistantsincludesprimaryandspecialtycareinmedicalandsurgicalpracticesettingsinrural,urbanandsuburbanareas.Physicianassistantpracticeisprimarilypatientcare-centeredbutmayalsoincludeeducational,research,oradministrativeactivities.TheElonUniversityPhysicianAssistantProgramisagraduatelevelprofessionalprogramdesignedtoproducegraduateswhoarecommittedtoprovidingexceptional,compassionate,individualizedpatientcare,servingtheircommunities,advancetheprofessionandengaginginlife-longlearningandprofessionaldevelopment.Graduateswillbewell-preparedforthenationalcertificationexaminationandstatelicensure,enablingthemtopartnerconfidentlywiththeirphysiciansupervisorstofulfilltherequirementsoftheirnewprofessionalrole.

Curriculumdeliverymodel

Thecurriculumisa27-monthprogramthatengagesstudentsthroughaninnovativesystems-organizedcurriculumemployinglargeandsmallgroupdiscussion,hands-onclinicalskillslabs,simulatedpatientexperiences,lecture,andpatientscenariodiscussions.Overthecourseoftheacademicyear,thepatientscenariosandsimulatedpatientexperienceswillincreaseincomplexity.ThesewillculminateinanAdvancedClinicalReasoningcourseinthefallthatbuildsonexistinglearner-centeredmodelsbyguidingstudentstoreapplyknowledgeandbuildcompetenceinallareasoftheCompetenciesforthePhysicianAssistantProfession.Additionally,studentswillhaveaClinicalPhasePreparationcourseinthefalloftheacademicyeartopreparethemfortheirtransitiontosupervisedclinicaleducationexperiences.Intheclinicaleducationphase,theClinicalYearseminarcourseswillfurtherpreparestudentsfortherigorsoftheclinicallearningexperiencesandgivethemanopportunitytostrengthentheirfundofmedicalknowledgethroughself-directedlearningactivities.

Admissions

AdmissiontoElonUniversity’s27-monthgraduateprograminPhysicianAssistantStudiesisdetailedontheProgram’swebsiteunderadmissionguidelinesat:

Totalcostofprogram

ThePAProgrammakeseveryefforttokeepcostsreasonableforstudents.However,becausetheProgramrunscontinuouslyfortwenty-sevenmonths,applicantsmustreviewtheirfinancialresourcescarefullyandanticipateexpensesrealistically.Duetotherigorousnatureofthecurriculum,studentsshouldnotplantobeemployedduringtheProgram.Classesmaybeheldineveningsand/orSaturdaysifnecessary,andduringtheclinicaleducationphase,allstudentswill,attimes,beassignedtoclinicalsitesoutsideoftheimmediateBurlington/AlamanceCountyarea.Thestudentisresponsibleforthecostsrelatedtoout-of-areatravelandhousingifapplicable.Thetotalcostoftheprogramisestimatedbelow.AdetailedbreakdownofexpensesmaybeviewedontheProgram’swebsiteat:http://www.elon.edu/e-web/academics/pa/

PAprogramfacilities

FrancisCenteraccess:TheFrancisCenterwillbeopenfrom8:00am-5:00pm,MondaythroughFriday,exceptforuniversityobservedholidays.OnlystudentsenrolledinaSchoolofHealthSciencesacademicprogramwithavalidPhoenixcardhave24-houraccesstothebuilding.AllElonUniversitystudentswithavalidPhoenixcardhavelimitedafter-hoursaccesstoclassroomsandgeneraluseareasofthebuildingoneveningsandweekends.Afterhours,studentswillusetheirPhoenixcardstoenterthebuildingviathesidedoor.Allkey-codedaccessrooms,suchaslaboratories,clinicalskillsandsmallgrouproomsshouldbesecurelylockedbyclosingthedooruponleavingtoensuresecurityofthehumandonorlaboratory,programequipment,books,etc.Allowingunauthorizedpersonstoentertheseareasmaybeconsideredabreachofprofessionalism.StudentsarenotpermittedtohavealcoholicbeveragesintheFrancisCenteratanytime.Sharedspace:ThePhysicianAssistantProgramfacilitiesareprimarilylocatedonthesecondflooroftheFrancisCenter.However,thereissharedspacewithDoctorofPhysicalTherapyEducationstudentsonthefirstfloorforanatomy,andthelockerrooms,thecomputerlaboratory,andastudentbreakroom.Asnotedabove,allElonstudentswillhavelimitedafter-hoursaccesstoclassroomsandgeneraluseareasoneveningsandweekends.Assuch,studentsshouldnotleaveanypersonalitemsunsecuredinthebuildingatanytime.Parking:StudentsmustregistertheirvehiclesintheOfficeofCampusSafetyandPoliceintheOaksCommons(http://www.elon.edu/e-web/bft/safety/p_register.xhtml)toobtainapermittoparkinthespacesdesignatedforPAstudentsattheFrancisCenter.Generally,parkingisopenontheEloncampusduringweekendsandafter5:00p.m.onweekdays.PAProgramofficeequipment:Useoftelephones,photocopying,andsecretarialserviceisrestrictedtothefacultyonly.StudentswillhaveaccesstotheFrancisCentercomputerlaboratory.Inadditiontocomputers,thereareprinterstationsinthelabandinthesecondfloorbreakroomforstudentuse.Universitytechnologystaffwillprovidesupportasneeded.Inanefforttoraiseawarenessofpaperusage

Healthcenterstaffwillreviewthehealthandimmunizationformtoensurethateachstudentmeetstheprogramrequirements.Acopyofthestudent’simmunizationrecord,includingthetuberculosisscreeningresults,requiredforsupervisedclinicalexperiences,willbeprovidedtotheProgramforthestudentfile.Studentsshouldalsokeepacopyforthemselvesthatisreadilyavailable.Inorderto

allowtheProgramtoreleasetheinformationtoclinicalsites,studentswillsignareleaseform.AllotherstudenthealthrecordsareconfidentialandwillnotbeaccessibletoProgramfacultyorstaff.Specificrequirements:

A. Proofofcurrenthealthinsurance.AsrequiredbyElonUniversityandtheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudies,currenthealthinsuranceismandatoryforeachyearofenrollmentintheProgram.StudentswillberequiredtoprovideacopyoftheirinsurancecardtothePrograminJanuaryeachyear.Thiswillbemaintainedinthestudentfile.

D. Documentationoftwovaricella(chickenpox)immunizationsorproofofpositive(immune)varicellatiter.Intheabsenceofproofofeitherimmunizationorimmunity,studentsmustbeimmunizedattheRNEllingtonHealthandCounselingCenterorbytheirprimarycareprovider.

E. Diphtheria,PertussisandTetanus:DocumentationofacompletedprimaryserieswithTdaporDTPandboosterwithinthelasttenyears.Allstudentsmusthavedocumentationofaone-timedoseofTdapeitheraspartoftheirprimaryseriesorasabooster.StudentsmaybeimmunizedattheRNEllingtonHealthandCounselingCenterorbytheirprimarycareprovider.

Infectiousdisease/environmentalexposure

TheElonUniversityDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudieshasacommitmenttoprotectthehealthandwell-beingofstudents,faculty,staff,andpatients.Aspartoftheirtraining,studentsmayencounterexposuretoinfectiousandenvironmentalhazards.Thismayincludebeingexposedtohumandonorsandpreservativechemicalssuchasformaldehydeintheanatomylab,latexorotherproductssuchasglovesthatmaycontainallergens,andexposuretocommunicableinfectiousdiseasewhichmaybetransferredviaairborne,mucousmembranesplashesorneedle-stickexposuresintheclinicalsetting.Whiletheriskoftransmissionissmall,theProgramhasanumberofpoliciesandproceduresinplacetominimizerisk.

A. StudentsintheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudiesarerequiredtoshowproofofappropriateimmunity,ordocumentedimmunization,aspartoftheirmatriculationrequirementsandpriortotheonsetofactualpatientcontact.Ultimately,eachstudentisresponsibleforhis/herhealthandsafetyintheeducationalandclinicalsettings.Therefore,itisthegoaloftheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudiesthatallstudentslearnappropriatepoliciesandprocedurestofollowintheeventthattheyareinjuredorpotentiallyexposedtoblood-bornepathogensorothercommunicablediseases.Examplesofblood-bornepathogensandcommunicablediseasemayincludetuberculosis,hepatitisB,hepatitisC,andHIV.Womenofchild-bearingagemayalsohaveadditionalconsiderations,suchasminimizingexposuretoinfectiousdiseases,possibleteratogensorchemicalexposures,orexposuretoionizingradiation.

B. Duringtheacademicyearoftraining,presentationsaregivenonuniversalbloodandbodyfluidprecautions,infectioncontrol,andpreventionofthespreadofcommunicabledisease.Inadditiontoinstructiononhowtopreventexposures,studentswillreceiveinstructiononwhatconstitutesan“exposure”andtheproceduresforcareandtreatmentafteranexposure.Intheeventofrespiratoryorgastrointestinalillness,studentsareadvisedtofollowhealthproviderrecommendationstoself-isolateathomeuntiltheyarenolongerpotentiallyinfectioustoothers.Studentsalsowillbeprovidedwithsafetypoliciestofollowintheanatomylaboratory(asdetailedintheDPTSafetyManual).Allergytoformaldehydeand/orlatex(previousandsubsequenttoenrollment)mustbeverifiedbyaphysician,PAorNP.ThestudentmustgivethisinformationtotheRNEllingtonHealthandCounselingCenterandtheAcademicSupportCenter,wheretheCoordinatorofDisabilitiesServicesisbased,inorderforprotectivemask/cartridgeorotheraccommodationstobeconsideredforpayment.Additionalinstructiononproceduresforcareandtreatmentofexposuresintheclinicalsettingwillbeprovidedaspartoforientationtotheclinicaleducationphase.

C. Thestudentisfinanciallyresponsibleforanycostsincurredsecondarytoinfectiousand/orenvironmentalhazardousexposures.

D. Effectsofinfectiousorenvironmentaldiseaseordisability–acquisitionofan infectiousorenvironmentaldiseasemayimpactstudentlearningactivities andoutcomes.Studentsmustbeabletomeetpublishedhealthrequirements

AspartoftheProgrammatriculationandclinicalsiteeligibilityrequirements,PAstudentswillbesubjecttocriminalbackgroundchecksanddrugscreening.Studentsarefinanciallyresponsibleforservicesrelatedtocriminalbackgroundchecksanddrugscreening.ForanychargesorlegalinfractionsthatoccurbetweenthetimeofsubmissionoftheProgram’sadmissionapplicationandmatriculationintotheProgram,thespecificdetails,includingdateofcharge(s),typeofoffense,anddispositionofthecase,mustbereportedtotheProgramDirectorimmediately.AnylegalchargesorinfractionsthatoccuraftermatriculationintotheProgramalsomustbereportedtotheProgramDirectorimmediately.FailuretocomplywillbegroundsfordismissalfromtheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudies.Asapre-requisitetoparticipatinginpatientcareatclinicalsitesduringtheacademicyearandclinicaleducationphase,studentswillberequiredtoundergooneormorerepeatnationalcriminalbackgroundchecks,whichmayincludefingerprinting.Recordsmaybesharedwithclinicalsitestodeterminestudenteligibilitytoparticipateinpatientcareactivities.Inaddition,studentswillcompletedrugscreeningpriortotheonsetofclinicalexperiences.Dependingonthespecificclinicalsiterequirements,thismayneedtoberepeatedannuallyormorefrequently.CriminalbackgroundchecksordrugscreeningresultsthatlimittheProgram’sabilitytosecureclinicalexperiencescanpreventastudentfrombeingpromotedtotheclinicaleducationphaseorrecommendedforgraduation.ByacceptingadmissiontotheProgram,studentsagreetosubmittonationalcriminalbackgroundchecksanddrugscreening,andalsoagreetopayexpensesassociatedwiththeserequirements.

Employment

BecauseoftherigoroftheacademicandclinicaleducationphasesofthePAProgram,outsideemploymentisstronglydiscouraged.Intheeventthatastudentdecidestomaintainemploymentduringhis/herprogramofstudy,workscheduleconflictswillnotbeanacceptableexcuseformissingacademicactivitiesandclinicalrotationassignmentswillnotbescheduledtoaccommodateastudent’semployment.StudentsmaynotbeemployedbythePAProgram.Whileastudentmaybeinvitedbyafacultymembertosharehis/herexpertiseinaspecificareawiththeclass,astudentmaynotsubstitutefororfunctionasinstructionalfaculty.During

Technicalstandards

Technicalstandards,asdistinguishedfromacademicstandards,refertothosephysical,cognitiveandbehavioralabilitiesrequiredforsatisfactorycompletionofallaspectsofthecurriculum,andthedevelopmentofprofessionalattributesrequiredbythefacultyofallstudentsatgraduation.AcandidatefortheMasterofScienceinPhysicianAssistantStudies(MSPAS)degreemusthaveabilitiesandskillsinfivedomains,includingobservation;communication;motor;intellectual;andbehavioralandsocial.Technologicalcompensationcanbemadeforsomedisabilitiesincertainareas,butacandidateshouldbeabletoperforminareasonablyindependentmanner.TheAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommitteereviewsstudents’abilitytomeettheTechnicalStandardsandrecommendsappropriateactionbetakenincaseswhereastudentmaynotbeincompliancewithdemonstratingthefollowingabilities:I.Observation:Thecandidatemustbeabletoobservedemonstrationsandexperimentsinthebasicsciences,includingbutnotlimitedtophysiologicandpharmacologicdemonstrationsinanimals,microbiologiccultures,andmicroscopicstudiesofmicroorganismsandtissuesinnormalandpathologicstates.Acandidatemustbeabletoobserveapatientaccuratelyatadistanceandcloseathand.Observationnecessitatesthefunctionaluseofthesenseofvisionandsomaticsensation.Itisenhancedbythefunctionaluseofthesenseofsmell.II.Communication:Acandidateshouldbeabletospeak,tohear,andtoobservepatientsinordertoelicitinformation,describechangesinmood,activity,andposture,andperceivenonverbalcommunications.Acandidatemustbeabletocommunicateeffectivelyandsensitivelywithpatients.Communicationincludesnotonlyspeechbutreadingandwriting.Thecandidatemustbeabletocommunicateeffectivelyandefficientlyinoralandwrittenformwithallmembersofthehealthcareteam.III.Motor:Candidatesshouldhavesufficientmotorfunctiontoelicitinformationfrompatientsbypalpation,auscultation,percussionandotherdiagnosticmaneuvers.Acandidateshouldbeabletodobasiclaboratorytests(urinalysis,CBC,etc.),carryoutdiagnosticprocedures(proctoscopy,paracentesis,etc.),andreadEKGsandx-rays.Acandidateshouldbeabletoexecutemotormovementsreasonablyrequiredtoprovidegeneralcareandemergencytreatmenttopatients.Examplesofemergencytreatmentreasonablyrequiredofphysicianassistantsarecardiopulmonaryresuscitation,theadministrationofintravenousmedication,theapplicationofpressuretostopbleeding,theopeningofobstructedairways,thesuturingofsimplewounds,andtheperformanceofsimpleobstetricalmaneuvers.Suchactionsrequirecoordinationofbothgrossandfinemuscularmovements,equilibrium,andfunctionaluseofthesensesoftouchandvision.

IV.Intellectual-Conceptual,IntegrativeandQuantitativeAbilities:Theseabilitiesincludemeasurement,calculation,reasoning,analysis,andsynthesis.Problemsolving,thecriticalskilldemandedofphysicianassistants,requiresalloftheseintellectualabilities.Inaddition,thecandidateshouldbeabletocomprehendthree-dimensionalrelationshipsandtounderstandthespatialrelationshipsofstructures.V.BehavioralandSocialAttributes:Acandidatemustpossesstheemotionalhealthrequiredforfullutilizationofintellectualabilities,theexerciseofgoodjudgment,thepromptcompletionofallresponsibilitiesattendanttothediagnosisandcareofpatients,andthedevelopmentofmature,sensitive,andeffectiverelationshipswithpatients.Candidatesmustbeabletotoleratephysicallytaxingworkloadsandtofunctioneffectivelyunderstress.Theymustbeabletoadapttochangingenvironments,todisplayflexibility,andtolearntofunctioninthefaceofuncertaintiesinherentintheclinicalproblemsofmanypatients.Compassion,integrity,concernforothers,interpersonalskills,interest,andmotivationareallpersonalqualitiesthatareassessedduringtheadmissionsandeducationprocesses.

Studentrecords

StudentadmissionrecordswillbemaintainedintheOfficeofAdmissions.StudentacademicrecordswillbehousedinalockedcabinetinthePAProgramoffice.IncompliancewiththeFamilyEducationalRightsandPrivacyAct(FERPA),identifiableinformationfromastudent’seducationalrecordwillonlybeaccessibletoPAprogramfacultyandstaff,andotherElonUniversityemployeeswithalegitimateeducationalneedfortheinformation.Forallotherthirdparties,writtenconsentwillbeobtainedfromthestudentspriortodisclosure.IncompliancewiththeAccreditationReviewCommissionforPhysicianAssistantEducation’s(ARC-PA)4theditionStandards,studenthealthrecordswillbemaintainedintheRNEllingtonHealthandCounselingServicesCenterandonlyrecordsofimmunizationsandtuberculinskintestsresultswillbemadeavailabletoprogramfacultyandstaff.

Academicandprofessionalpolicies

Facultyadvisors

Followingacceptancetotheprogramandreceiptofthetuitiondeposit,eachstudentwillbeassignedafacultyadvisorfortheacademicyear.BecausethePAprogramcurriculumisdeliveredinalock-stepfashion,theroleoftheadvisorwillnotinvolvehelpingstudentsdesigntheireducationalplanintheacademicyear.Thefocusofthefacultyadvisorwillbetosupportthestudent’sacademicsuccessandpersonalwell-being.Earlyintheeducationalprogramtherewillberequiredmeetingtimesforadvisorsandadvisees.Later,astheadvisingrelationshipbecomesestablishedandthestudentbecomesgroundedintheprogram,themeetingtimesmaybeperiodicandoccurasneeded.Theadvisor’srolemayincludeadvisingthestudentregardingstudyskills,timemanagementandadjustingtolifeinaprogramofgraduatestudyatElon,aswellasprovidingformativefeedbacktothestudentregardinghis/heracademicprogressandprofessionaldevelopment.Intheclinical

Assessmentprocedures

Testdayexpectations:Onthedayofanexamination,studentsareexpectedtobeintheirseatsfiveminutespriortothescheduledstarttimefortheexamination.Proctorswillnotanswerquestionsduringtheexam(ie:provideinterpretation)butcanbenotifiedaboutanyformattingortechnicalissues.Forexamsheldinthecomputerlab,nobeveragesareallowedandstudentswillbeprovidedapencilandblankpieceofpaperthatwillbecollectedattheendoftheexam.Intheeventofapaperexam,studentsmaybringacoveredbeverageintotheroomandapencilorpen.Allotherpersonalbelongingsshouldbestoredoutsideorinfrontoftheclassroomwheretheexaminationisoccurring.Becausethestudyroomsmaybeneededforothereducationalpurposes,studymaterialsandpersonalbelongingsshouldbeplacedinthestudentlockerorotherpersonalspacebeforeallexaminations.Studentsareencouragedtotakecareoftheirpersonalneedspriortotheexamination.Restroomsbreaks,oneatatime,willbeallowedwithpermissionfromtheproctor.Absenceandmake-upexaminations:Studentsareexpectedtotakeallexaminationsatthetimetheyareadministeredtotheentireclass.Intheeventofanexcusedabsencethathasbeendiscussedinadvancewiththecoursedirector,amake-upexaminationmaybepossible.Themake-upexaminationwouldbescheduledassoonaspossibleaftertheoriginalexaminationdate.Unexcusedabsencesfromanexaminationwillresultinascoreof0(zero)fortheexamination.Ifastudentarriveslateforanexamination,he/sheshouldentertheexaminationroomquietly,fromthebackoftheroomandtakethenearestopenseat.Theproctorwillbringthe

Summativeassessments

Aspartoftheassessmentprocessofacademicyearandclinicaleducationphases,PAstudentswillcomplete“summative”examinationsaspartoftheiroverallacademicandprofessionalassessmenttodeterminereadinesstobepromotedtoeithertheclinicaleducationphaseorgraduationasappropriate.DuringthelatterpartoftheClinicalPhasePreparationcourse,academicyearstudentswilltakethePhysicianAssistantClinicalKnowledgeRatingandAssessmentTool(PACKRAT)examination(written,multiplechoice)andcompletetwoobjectivestructuredclinicalexams(OSCEs)(practicalexams).ThePACKRATisusedonlyasastudentself-assessmenttool(meaningthereisnocoursegradeattachedtoit)andtheOSCEexaminationswillbegradedpass/fail.AcademicyearstudentsshouldseethePACKRATasawaytoidentifystrengthsandareasofconcernastheypreparetoentertheclinicalphase.Theywillreceivefeedbackontheirindividualperformanceaswellasinformationabouthowtheirclass

Courseevaluations

Courseandinstructorevaluationsarevaluabletopromotingimprovementsintheprogramanddeliveryofcurriculum.Theinformationprovidedinevaluationsisanimportantaspectofourcontinuousprogramself-assessmentrequiredforARC-PAaccreditation.Completionofevaluationsbystudentsisrequiredandcommentsshouldbeconstructiveandprofessionalinpresentation.Ifcourseandinstructorevaluationsarenotcompletedinatimelymannerbystudents,additionalclasstimemaybescheduledattheendofeachmoduletocompletetheevaluations.

Academic&professionalprogress

Astudent’sprogressthroughtheProgramisbaseduponsuccessfuldemonstrationofexpectedcompetenciesandprofessionalbehaviorsandattitudes.Atthecompletionofthespring,summerIIandfallIImodulesoftheProgram,theDPASAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommitteewillrevieweachstudent’sdemonstrationoftheknowledge,skills,attitudes,andprofessionalcomportmentnecessarytoprogresstothenextmoduleandmakearecommendationtotheProgramDirectorregardingprogression.

GuidelinesforProfessionalismintheUseofSocialMediabyPAStudentsSocialmediasuchasemail,Facebook,Twitter,Instagram,blogs,etc.,havebecomeubiquitousagentsthroughouttheworld.Eachofferstheabilitytoconnectandshareinformationandphotoswithotherpeopleinnearlyrealtimesituations.Whilesocialmediacanprovidemanyunique,beneficialexperiences,physicianassistantstudentsneedtobeawareofthepotentialpitfallsassociatedwiththeuseofsocialmediabyhealthcareprovidersandstudents.PhotosandcommentspostedonlinecanbeviewedbynearlyanyonewithanInternetconnection.Privacysettingsoftenarenotenoughtopreventphotosandcommentsfrombeingdistributedbythestudent,provider,ortheirfriendsandfamilymembers.Onlineactionscanaffectthestudent’spersonalandprofessionalreputationsaswellasimpactingthereputationoftheuniversityandtheprofessionasawhole.Medicineisaconservativefield.Physicianassistantsandotherhealthcareprovidersaregenerallyheldtohigherstandardsofpersonalandprofessionalconductthanotherprofessionsduetotheethicalandprivatenatureofpatientinteractions.Theonlineavailabilityofaprovider’spersonalinformationcanbeusedinhiringdecisionsespeciallywhenagraduateisapplyingforafirstjoborintheeventofdismissaldecisionswhenaphysicianassistantisalreadyemployed.Statelicensingboardshavetheauthoritytodisciplinehealthcareprovidersforonlineprofessionalismissuesincludingrevealingpatientinformation,unprofessional

conduct,actionsorbehaviorsdeemedprovocative,appearanceofintoxication,misrepresentationofcredentials,anddiscriminatorypracticesorcomments.StudentsshoulduseextremecautionwhenpostingverbalorphotographicdepictionsoftheirpersonallivesandunderstandthatunprofessionalbehaviorshownonsocialmediawillbeconsideredsignificantbreachesofprofessionalismthatarenotacceptableinthisProgram.ElonUniversityDPASstudentsareconsideredtobemembersofthephysicianassistantprofessionuponenteringtheProgramandshouldconductthemselvesaccordingly.Manyhospitalsandotherhealthcaresystemshaveverystringentguidelinesontheuseofsocialmediabytheiremployees.ElonDPASisadoptingthefollowingguidelinestohelppreparestudentsforwhattheymayexpectastheyentertheworkforce:

1. Nopatientinformationwillbesharedonlinebyanystudentintheprogramwithoutdocumentationofpatientpermission.Studentsmustrecognizethatevenattemptstode-identifyinformationcanbeinsufficienttoprotectpatientprivacy.

2. Studentsmaynotengageinonlinediscussionsofpatientsorgroupsofpatients,classmates,instructors,preceptors,ElonUniversityorclinicalpracticesitesusingprofanity,discriminatoryordisparagingcomments.

3. Studentsmustnotinteractwithcurrentorpastpatientsviasocialmedia.4. Studentsmustrefrainfrompostingphotosorcommentsshowingthemselves

inpotentiallyunprofessionalsituations(e.g.drinkingalcohol,smokinghookahs,usingweapons,etc.)

5. Studentsmaynotrepresentthemselvesonlineashealthcareprovidersuntilaftertheyhavesuccessfullygraduatedandcompletedappropriatelicensingrequirements.

6. Studentsmaynotusesocialmediaduringclass,laborotherinstructionaltimeunlessgivenspecificpermissionbytheinstructor.

Attendance

Duetotheintensenatureandrapidpaceofthecurriculum,attendanceforallclassesandrequiredactivitieswithintheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudiesismandatory.Studentsareexpectedtobeontimeforclassandshouldplantheirschedulesaccordingly.Medicalandpersonalappointmentsshouldbescheduledoneveningsorweekends,asmuchaspossible.

RequestsforabsencesmustbesubmittedtotheAcademicCoordinatorandcourseinstructorusingtheProgram’s“AcademicYearAbsenceRequestForm”(seeAppendixD)priortotheabsence.Clinicalstudentswillbeprovidedasimilarformtocompleteforanyclinicaleducationphaseabsences.Allabsencesduetoillness,accidentorotherunexpectedpersonalorfamilyeventsmustbereportedviae-mailortelephonetotheAcademicCoordinator,thecourseinstructorandadministrativeassistantassoonasthestudentisawarethathe/shemaymissclasstime.Allotherabsencesthatarenotpre-approvedbytheAcademicCoordinatorandcourseinstructorwillbeconsideredunexcused.

PersonalDaysWhiletheProgramhasa100%attendancepolicy,werecognizethateachstudenthastimeswhentheyneedtobeabsent.Assuch,eachstudentisallowedthree(3)personaldaysduringtheacademicyearforpersonalevents/activities.Thedayscanonlybeusedonedayatatime,onceduringeachmodule:spring(Jan-May),summer(June-August)andfall(September–December).Thedayscannotbeusedinincrementsorcarriedovertothenextmodule.ThesedaysmustbeapprovedinadvancewiththeAcademicCoordinator,andcannotoccurondayswhenthereareexams,quizzes,procedureorskillscheck-offs–oronadaythatinvolvesspecializedinstructioninareassuchasACLStestingorGyn/GUtrainingwithstandardizedpatientsthatcannotbemade-up.Studentswillberesponsibleforanymaterialmissedduringapersonalday.EmergenciesandsickdaysarenotconsideredpersonaldaysandwillneedtobereportedtotheAcademicCoordinatortobeexcusedonacase-by-casebasis.Personaldaysarerequestedbysubmittinganabsencerequestformtotheacademiccoordinatoraminimumoftwobusinessdaysinadvanceofthedatetheabsenceisdesired.Unexcusedabsences,repeatedabsencesorrepeatedtardinessmaybeconsideredunprofessionalbehaviorandcanbegroundsforadisciplinaryhearingordismissalfromtheProgram.

Dresscode

Asarelativelynewprofession,PAstudentsshouldbeawarethattheimagetheyprojectisveryimportanttoboththeDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudiesandthePAprofession.PAstudentsareexpectedtodressinamannerthatissupportiveofaneffectivelearningenvironmentfortheirpeers,faculty,andstaff.Businesscasualattireispreferredduringclass;clothingthatisrevealinginnatureisnotacceptable.Whenguestlecturersorotherguestsarepresentduringaclassorlab,studentsshouldbemindfulthattheyarerepresentingthePrograminthecommunityandshouldconveyaprofessionalimage.Mini-skirts,shorts,tubetops,excessivejewelry,facialpiercings,andflip-flopsarenotappropriate.StudentsarealsoexpectedtofollowtheseguidelineswhentheyarerepresentingthePrograminanysettingthatrequiresthemtointeractwiththeUniversitycommunity,the

professionalmedicalcommunity,orthegeneralpublic.Facultyreservetherighttoremovestudentsfromtheclassroomoraskthemtoaltertheirappearanceiftheyfeeltheyarenotachievingthisstandard.Attireduringanatomylaboratorywillbe:scrubs,optionallabcoatandclosedtoedsneakersorshoes.Noonewillbepermittedintheanatomylaboratorywithoutsafefootwear.Attireduringclinicalskillslabswillbe:shorts,jog/sportsbrasforwomen,teeshirtsformenandwomen,socks,andsneakers.AnatomyandclinicalskillslabattiremustbeworninthelabareaonlyandnotintheclassroomareaorotherareasoftheFrancisCenter.Lockerroomfacilitiesareprovidedforchangingintoappropriateclothingforagivenclass.Intheclinicalsetting,businessprofessionalattire,alongwithashortwhitelabcoatisrequiredtobewornatalltimes,unlessotherwisedirectedbythesite.Forexample,menshouldwearashirt,tie,anddressslacks.Womenshouldwearablouseandaskirtordressslacks.Closedtoeshoesmustbewornatalltimes.FailuretoadheretothedresscodestandardsmaybeconsideredaviolationofStandardsforProfessionalConductandstudentsmaybesubjecttodisciplinaryhearingsordismissalforrepeatedinfractions.

Identification

Allstudentswillbeprovidedwithauniversityidentificationbadge,includingnameandphoto,clearlyidentifyingeachstudentasanElonUniversityphysicianassistant(PA)student.StudentsarerequiredtowearthesebadgesatalltimeswhenparticipatinginPAprofessionalfunctionssuchasahealthfairorwheninpatientcareareas.Inclinicalpracticesettings,studentsmustidentifythemselvesasPAstudentstopatientsandhealthcarepractitioners.ThisbadgemustbereturnedtotheProgramupongraduationorafterwithdrawalordismissalfromtheDepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudies. ShadowingduringtheacademicphaseDuringtheacademicphase,“shadowing”inclinicalsettingsthatisnotarrangedorauthorizedbytheProgramisnotpermitted.Thisistoassurethatstudentsdonotviolatehealthcarefacilitycredentialingprocedures(HIPAA,immunizationcompliance,safety,etc.)andarenotputinasituationwheretheyareexpectedtoprovidepatientcareforwhichtheydonothaveappropriatetraining.AnexampleofshadowingthatispermittedduringtheacademicphaseincludesvolunteeringattheOpenDoorClinic,providedastudenthascompletedallimmunizationrequirements

ViolationsofStandardsforAcademicorProfessionalConduct

GoodacademicstandingimpliesthatastudentisincompliancewithallProgrampolicies,isnotonacademicprobationorsuspensionandhasnotbeendismissed.Astudentwhoseperformancefallsbelowtheminimumacceptablestandard(s)foranyareaofstudywillbenotifiedofsuchdeficiencybythecoursedirector,his/heracademicadvisor,and/ortheProgramDirectorassoonasevidenceofsuchsubstandardperformanceisavailable.StudentswhodonotmeettheStandardsforAcademicandProfessionalConductordonotadheretoprogrampolicymaybecandidatesforprobationordismissal.ViolationsofthepolicieswillbereportedtotheProgramDirector.TheProgramDirectormayelecttodealwiththematterdirectlyorreferthemattertoDPASAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommitteeforassessmentandrecommendationofappropriatesanctions.DecisionsmaybeappealedbyemployingtheproceduresforStudentAppealslistedintheElonStudentHandbook.UnsatisfactoryCourseGrades-Anunsatisfactorygrade(“U”)inanycourseconstitutesafailinggrade,andimmediatelyplacesthestudentonacademicprobation,requiringthatthecourseberemediated.

Remediation

Astudentearningacoursegradeof“U”mustconsultthecoursedirectorforaplantoremediatethecourseforthepurposeofclosinggapsinthestudent’sfundofknowledge.Thestudentshouldscheduleanappointmentwiththecoursedirector

assoonaspossibleafterreceivingnotificationofthefailinggrade.Thecoursedirectorwilldevelopanindividualizedremediationplan(includingatimelineforcompletion,expectations,assessmentstrategies,etc.)basedonhis/herassessmentofthestudent’sknowledgedeficitsandinconsultationwiththestudent.Otherfacultyteachinginthecoursealsomaybeconsultedfortheirinput.TheremediationplanmustbereviewedandapprovedbytheDPASAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommittee.Astudentwhoremediatesacoursemaynotearnhigherthana“C”.Theremediatedcoursewillbenotedontheofficialacademictranscriptwithanasteriskfollowingtheremediatedgrade(e.g.,C*).Theasteriskisdefinedonthetranscriptas“*CoursewasremediatedtoearnamaximumgradeofC.”Astudentwhofailstoachieveagradeof“C”inaremediatedcoursewillbeconsideredfordismissalfromtheprogram.

DecelerationTheElonUniversityPAcurriculumisdesignedtobedeliveredonafull-timebasistostudentsinacohort.Thereisnoformaldecelerationplanoroptiontocompletethecurriculumonapart-timebasis.

AcademicprobationStudentswhoearnagradeof“U”foranycourseintheprogramorwhosecumulativegradepointaveragefallsbelow3.00atanytimeduringtheprogramwillbeplacedonacademicprobation.AstudentplacedonprobationwillreceivealetterfromtheChairoftheAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommitteeoutliningthereasonforandconditionsofprobationandthestepsnecessarytoreturntogoodacademicstanding.Inaddition,thestudentonprobationisrequiredtomeetwithhis/herfacultyadvisortodiscussthesituationanddevelopastrategyforimprovingperformance.Whileonprobation,studentswillnotbepermittedtoholdanofficeinthestudentsocietyorserveastheleaderofanyPAprogramfunctionoractivity.Whenthestudenthasmettheconditionstoreturntogoodacademicstanding,he/shemaybepermittedtoresumeleadershiproleswiththeapprovalofhis/heracademicadvisor.

Promotion

Promotionisdefinedasprogressionfromtheacademicyeartotheclinicaleducationphase.TheDPASAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommitteewillrecommendastudentforpromotion.AstudentmaynotberecommendedforpromotionfromtheacademicyeartotheclinicaleducationphasewithanyoutstandinggradesofUnsatisfactory(U)onhis/heracademicrecordorwithacumulativegradepointaverageoflessthan3.00.Whenconsideringastudentforpromotionfromtheacademicyeartotheclinicaleducationphase,meetingthetechnicalstandardsoftheprogram,professional(e.g.satisfactorycriminalbackgroundreportanddrugscreenresults)andethicalconductaswellasacademicperformancewillbeconsidered.Inaddition,astudentwillbepromotedonlyifalllegalandfinancialrequirementsoftheUniversityhavebeensatisfied.Completionof

allrequirementsforsuccessfulpromotionwillbedocumentedbyDPASAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommitteeandrecordedinthestudentfile.

MaximumtimetocompletetheDPAScurriculum

ThemaximumlengthoftimeapersonmaybeenrolledintheDPAScurriculumis42months(3.5years).ThetermsofanextensiontocompletetheprogramwillbedeterminedbytheDPASChairpersonor,inextenuatingcircumstances,bythePresident.

Disciplinaryprocedures

StudentswhoseperformanceisunacceptableduetonotmeetingtheStandardsforAcademicandProfessionalConductorwhodonotadheretoprogrampolicywillbeplacedonprobation.StudentsalsomaybedismissediftheydonotmeettheTechnicalStandardswhileenrolledintheProgram.ViolationsoftheStandardswillbeheardbytheAcademicProfessionalProgressCommitteeforreviewandrecommendationofappropriateaction.Aletteroutliningtheviolationandrequiredstepstoreturntogoodstanding(eitheracademic,professionalism,orfailuretomeetthetechnicalstandards)willbeprovidedtothestudentfromtheAPPCChair.DecisionsmaybeappealedtotheProgramDirector.Ifasatisfactoryresolutionisnotreached,theappealcanbecontinuedbyemployingtheproceduresforStudentAppealslistedintheElonStudentHandbook.TheDeanoftheSchoolofHealthSciences/DesigneemaybeconsultedforclarificationaboutinitiationoftheprocesstoappealdecisionsoftheAPPC

Leaveofabsence

Astudentingoodacademicstandingmayrequestaleaveofabsenceduetooccurrenceofamedicalproblem,seriouspersonalproblem(s),orpregnancy.TheAPPCalsocanplaceastudentonleaveifdeemednecessarytoallowtimeforthestudenttotakestepstobeincompliancewithprogramrequirementsasdetailedabove.Aleaveofabsencewilllikelyresultinadelayedgraduation.StudentsrequestingaleaveofabsencemustapplyinwritingtotheProgramDirector.Intheeventofamedicalproblem,therequestshouldbeaccompaniedbyaletterfromahealthcareproviderdescribingthenatureoftheconditionforwhichtheleaveisrequestedandtheestimatedlengthoftimeneededforrecovery.Afterconsultationwiththestudent,theProgramDirectorwilldecidewhetherornottheleaveistobegrantedandtheconditionsunderwhichthestudentmayreturntoschool.Astudentrequestingaleaveofabsenceduringorattheendoftheacademicyearmustgothroughthefollowingprocedure:A.RequestinwritingaleaveofabsencefromtheProgramDirector.B.ThestudentmustpersonallymeetwiththeProgramDirectortodiscussthereasonfortheleave.

C.Afterconsultingwiththestudent,anduponapprovaloftheleave,theProgramDirectorwillassistthestudentthroughtheofficialexitprocedure.1. TheProgramDirectorwillsendanofficiallettertothestudentindicatingthat

theleaveofabsencehasbeenapproved,specifyingthetermsoftheleave.a. Thetermsoftheleaveofabsencewillbedeterminedbythe

ProgramDirectorandreviewedwiththestudent,includingthefollowingelements:

i. Implicationsforresumingthecurriculum(courserequirementsandsequencingissues)

ii. Durationoftheleave(nolongerthan12months)iii. Methodfordemonstratingacademicreadinessupon

returntotheProgramiv. Methodfordemonstratingabilitytomeetthetechnical

standardsuponreturntotheProgramv. Needtorepeatcriminalbackgroundcheckand/orurine

drugscreenpriortoreturn(atthestudent’sexpense)vi. Curriculumorpolicyrevisionstowhichthestudentwill

besubjectuponreturntotheProgramTheProgramDirectorwillalsonotifytheDeanoftheSchoolofHealthSciences/Designeeoftheapprovedleaveofabsence.Theofficialstartdateoftheleavewillbetheoriginaldateofreceiptofthestudent’srequest.Intheeventthestudentisincapacitatedandunabletoinitiatetherequest,theProgramDirectormayfacilitatethisprocess.Shouldtheleaverequireaformalwithdrawalfromtheuniversity;theProgramDirectorwillassistthestudentincomplyingwiththerequirementsdetailedintheElonStudentHandbook.Anytuitionreimbursementwillbeinaccordancewiththeinstitution’srefundpolicy.

Withdrawal

SeetheElonStudentHandbookforinformationaboutvoluntarywithdrawalfromthePAprogram.

Suspension

Eachstudentisexpectedtogovernhis/herconductwithconcernforotherindividualsandfortheentireuniversitycommunity.Actionsthatthreatenorendanger,inanyway,thepersonalsafetyand/orwell-beingofothers,orwhichdisruptorinterferewiththeorderlyoperationoftheuniversityarecauseforimmediatedisciplinaryaction.EitherthePresident,Provost-VicePresidentofAcademicAffairs,DeanoftheSchoolofHealthSciences,DPASchair,orUniversityAdministrativedesigneehastheauthoritytosummarilysuspendastudentwhen,intheopinionofthePresident,Provost,VicePresidentofAcademicAffairs,DeanoftheSchoolofHealthSciencesorDPASChair,suchactionisappropriatetoprotectthehealthorsafetyofanyindividual,ortopreservetheorderlyoperationofthe

university.Whenastudentissummarilysuspended,thestudentshallbeinformed,inwriting,ofthespecificchargesonwhichsuchsuspensionisbased.Suchnoticeshallbedeliveredpersonallytothestudent,ormailedbycertifiedmail,withinforty-eight(48)hoursoftheimpositionofthesuspension.SuchconductbyastudentshallbeconsideredaviolationofthestandardsofacademicandprofessionalconductandsuspectedviolationswillbehandledbytheproceduresoutlinedunderViolationsofStandardsofAcademicorProfessionalConductsectionoftheDPASStudentHandbook.Ifastudentissuspendedforanyreason,allstudentfinancialaidwillbewithhelduntiltheappealprocessisresolvedbyreinstatementofthestudentordismissalofthestudent.Ifreinstated,thefinancialaidfundscanbereleasedtothestudent.Ifthestudentisdismissed,thefundswillbereturnedtotheproperagency/lenderrespectively.

Dismissal

Thefollowingconditionswillresultinastudentbeingsubjecttodismissalfromtheprogram:

1. ViolationoftheStandardsforAcademicandProfessionalConduct2. Asecondcoursegradeof“U”3. Lackofprofessionalorpersonalattributesconsideredappropriatefor

continuanceintheprogramandprofession4. Failuretomeetthetechnicalstandardsoftheprogram.5. Anyeventthatcouldresultineitheracademicorprofessionalprobation

forastudentcurrentlyonacademicorprofessionalprobation6. Violationofthetermsofprobationasstatedinaletteratthetimethe

studentisplacedonprobation7. Beingconvictedofacrimethatwillprecludethestudentfrom

participatinginclinicaleducation.Arecordofconviction,orenteredpleaofguilty,ornolocontenderewithrespecttoanyfelony,oranycrimeagainstadependentpopulation,specificallyincludingbutnotlimitedto,elderabuse,childabuse,orchildmolestation,maypreventaPAstudentfromparticipatinginclinicaleducationexperiences.

8. FalsificationofrecordsormaterialspertinenttotheapplicationtothePAprogram

DismissalProcedure-Thefollowingprocessapplieswhenastudentisbeingconsideredforacademicorprofessionaldismissal:

1. ThefactsandreasonsinsupportoftherecommendationfordismissalarepresentedtotheAcademicandProfessionalProgressCommittee.

2. Thestudentisadvisedtoobtainguidancefromhis/herfacultyadvisor(ifthestudent’sadvisoristhefacultymemberpresentingthereasonfordismissaltotheProgramDirector,anewadvisorwillbeassigned).

3. Ifdesired,thestudentmaypresenthisorhercasetotheAPPC.

4. TheAPPCwillreviewandconsiderallrelevantinformationfromtheprofessor(s)andthestudenttomakeadeterminationregardingstudentdismissalorcontinuationintheprogram.

5. ThestudentwillbeadvisedbytheProgramDirectoroftheAPPCrecommendationinaccordancewithoneofthefollowingoutcomes:

a. DismissfromthePAProgram;b. Requireorhighlyrecommendcounselingtoimproveacademic

performanceand/orprofessionalbehavior;c. Ifthestudenthaslessthana3.00gradepointaverage(GPA)heor

shemayreturntothecurriculumonacademicprobationandmustimprovetheGPAto3.00orhigherorbesubjecttodismissalfromtheprogram.

6. ThestudentwillthenbegivenawrittennotificationofthefinaldecisionbytheProgramDirector.

7. Ifthestudentisnotinagreementwiththedismissaldecisionandwishestopursueitthroughthegrievanceprocedure,heorshemaycontacttheJudicialAppealsOffice[http://www.elon.edu/e-web/students/handbook/appeal.xhtml]ortheAcademicAppealsCommittee[http://www.elon.edu/e-web/students/handbook/affairs.xhtml#appeal](seeElonStudentHandbook).
