StepThree:ElementResearchDay– Oncestudentsknowtheirelement,theyneedplentyoftimetoconducttheirresearchandfillouttheresearchsheetprovided.Theywillneedaccesstocomputers.Igivemystudentsafullblock(90minutes)tocompletetheinternetresearchpages.IfIhaveearly-finishers,Iallowthemtoexploretheheromachine.comonlinesuperherocreator.

StepFour:Studentswilldesigntheirheroes/villians.Iallowmystudentstousetheonlinewebsiteheromachine.com tocreatetheircharacters.Thekidsjustloveit!AtfirstIwasabitworriedbecauseofthedresscodeissue,butItoldthestudentsupfrontthattheirsuperhero/villians needtofollowtheschooldresscodepolicies.IalsotoldthemthefirstthingIwantthemtodoistogivetheircharactersschoolappropriateclothing.Iteach7th gradeandhadabsolutelynoissues.Thestudentsweresoexcitedtousetheprogramthattheyfolloweddirectionsexplicitly.Ialsotellmystudentsthattheyarenotallowedtogivetheirheroes/villians inappropriateweaponssuchasguns.Iletthemusetheenergyweapons,poles,&bow&arrows.

Iassigntheherobackstoryashomework.Then,Ihavethestudentsplacetheirpagesonposterposterfordisplayintheroom.Ialsohavethemstapletheelementresearchsheettotheback....andthat’sit!Ihanguptheamazingartworkallaroundmyroom,andboydostudentsgetakickoutofviewingothers’projects.I hopeyouandyourstudentsenjoytheprojectandifyouhaveanyquestionspleasegotomyQ&AsectionofmyTPTaccounttoask.Ilovetohelp!

Ø WhenyoufirstentertheHeroMachine2,youwillbepromptedtochooseapose.Theprogramcomeswith6posestochoosefrom.Whenyouclickonapose,theposeloadingoptionboxwillappear.Irecommendclicking“complete”unlessyouhaveareallyslowinternetconnect.Thiswillloadalltheavailabledesignoptions.

Ø Thestudentswillfinishtheirsuperheroesatdifferenttimes.Itellthemtoraisetheirhandandshowmetheirfinaldesignpriortoprinting.Thisgivesmeachancetomakesurethattheirsuperhero/villians areappropriateforschool.Ialsomakesurethattheydidnotchooseanyoftheinkheavybackgroundsbecausethiswouldwastealotofink.Ifallisgood,Itellthestudentstoscreenshottheirhero(command,shift4onamac).Youcouldalsohavestudentshittheprintbutton.Ipreferthescreenshotmethodbecausethisallowsstudentstohaveadigitalcopyanduploadtheimagetoadocumentsothattheycanthenaddtext,suchasthesuperheroesname,catchphrase,atomicmodel,andperiodicsquare.

Ø Ifstudentsdonotfinishtheirdesignsintime,theycanclickthesavebuttonatthetop.Thiswillbringupaboxwiththecoding.It’simportantthatthestudentscopyandpastethiscodeintoaworddoc.Later,theycanreloadthesuperherotheysavedbygoingbacktothewebsiteandclickingtheloadbuttonatthetop.Theywillthenbepromptedtopastetheircodeintothebox.Then,theirsuperherowillload.
