“Although change is part of the working of
complex systems, the speed with which human
activity has developed contrasts with the naturally
slow pace of biological evolution. Moreover, the
goals of this rapid and constant change are not
necessarily geared to the common good or to
integral and sustainable human development.
Change is something desirable, yet it becomes a
source of anxiety when it causes harm to the world
and to the quality of life of much of humanity.” (18)
- Pope Francis, Laudato Si’

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME
Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings: Jesus is our living bread. For what
do you hunger? How can Jesus fill that hunger?
Talk about ways to nourish your family life. What food does your family need for the journey of life? Write down a nutrition plan for your family. A standard nutrition plan may include more fruits and vegetables. This alternative family plan may include more and better communication. Post the results somewhere so that everyone can see them and can follow the plan.
Go on a family picnic. Bring food and a Bible for nourishment. Read from the Gospel of John, 6:41-51. Talk about what nourishes your life.
Arrange to visit someone in your parish who is homebound and cannot attend the Eucharist. Perhaps an adult in the family can also bring the Eucharist to this person.

CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 15 & 16
ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
G.I.F.T. REGISTRATION
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I : 1 Kings 19:4-8
The angel of the Lord came back to him.
Elijah, discouraged and fearing for his life, flees into the desert and prays
for death.
God's answer to his prayer echoes the Exodus and desert experience of
Israel.
Though he is discouraged and desperate when he flees into the desert, Elijah
is transformed by the bread and water sent from God.
Reading II : Ephesians 4:30-5:2
Live in love.
Today's passage describes the undeniable love that Christ has shown.
Paul reminds the Ephesians that they share in new life with God.
Christ gave his life for love of us; we must in turn show love to our
neighbor.
Gospel : John 6:41-51
No one can come to me unless my Father draws him or her.
Those who hear Jesus describe himself as “bread from heaven,” murmur
about Jesus being the Bread of Life.
This echoes Israel murmuring in the desert about food and water and
leadership. Jesus is the manna, the provision from God to quench spiritual
hunger; he is the Bread of Life.
The difference between manna and Jesus is that those who ate the manna
died, but those who eat the Bread of Life will live forever.

TODAY’S READINGS
7

REGISTRACIONES DE G.I.F.T.

STEWARDSHIP
SPACE FOR ADS
PRAYER Prayer is the cornerstone of stewardship. Only when we spend time with God in prayer are we
spiritually prepared to offer ourselves in service to others. Just as we schedule the other important
parts of daily life, we need to make a conscious effort to make time for prayer.

ANNUAL APPEAL 2015
“All This I Do For the Sake of the Gospel”
We have reached our goal in pledges for the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual
Appeal! But we really should be achieving TWICE our goal each year,
since AAA funds received over and above our goal return to us at IHM
without any Archdiocesan assessment! Our gifts help the charitable
works of the Archdiocese AND they help our parish. If you have not
already made a pledge to the 2015 AAA, please visit
http://appeal.archatl.com to make your pledge today!
Thank you to all who have already pledged! Remember to look for
your monthly pledge reminders, and please do your best to honor your
pledge before the end of the year. If you are having any
difficulty whatsoever with your pledge or pledge reminders, please
contact Richard Plachta at rplachta@ihmatlanta.org or 404-636-1418,
ext. 245.
Deo Gratias! We are grateful to all of our parishioners who have remembered this parish in their wills or estate
plans. Did you know that persons who have made a planned gift for our parish automatically receive membership
in the Deo Gratias Society of the Catholic Foundations of North Georgia? Among other benefits, this member-
ship includes an invitation to the annual Deo Gratias Society Mass and luncheon with Archbishop Gregory in
September. If you have already included our parish in your will or estate plans, but have not informed the parish
office, please let us know so we can coordinate your invitation to the September event—or call The Catholic
Foundation directly at 404-497-9440.
