The UH1UP Challenge scavenger hunt was hosted by the University of Houston in the fall semester, 2013. It relied on game mechanics to help students find resources for their academic and professional success, learn about the university, and network with their peers. Each of the seven tasks in the challenge was designed to also support strategic goals for the university, such as student success, affinity building, and community engagement. To play, students would complete tasks and use their smart phones to submit photos of their activity to an app. Several tasks had layered components, timing challenges, and off-campus commitments. Despite these hurdles, over 500 students participated, exceeding the program goal. http://www.uh.edu/uh1up/

Since its inception in 2001, The University of Texas System-wide Endowment Compliance Program has evolved into a model for strengthening stewardship; ensuring compliance with endowment agreements, laws and policies; increasing effective use of available resources; and improving reporting to donors and UT System leadership. The Program requires that all endowments (10,651 valued at $6.2 billion as of 8/31/2012) be reviewed and reported on at least every three years, via an Endowment Compliance Report that contains data on operating account balances and excessive accumulations, expenditures, donor reporting, and staff training. The Endowment Compliance Report is submitted annually by each of the UT System’s nine academic and six health institutions. Following evaluation by UT System Administration endowment compliance personnel, results are reported to UT System leadership and the UT System Board of Regents, and a report of findings and recommendations is issued to the President of each institution. The comprehensive nature of the UT System-wide Endowment Compliance Program is unique among institutions of higher education in the nation today. In 2008, the Program received an Award of Excellence in Outstanding Advancement Services Initiative from CASE, Southwest District IV, and in 2013, a Silver Award in Overall Operations was received from CASE.

Jackie left her entire estate to the West Texas A&M University Foundation, included in the estate were acres of farmland, the family home and its complete contents, consisting of antique furniture, vintage jewelry, sterling silver flatware and serving pieces, several designer handbags and numerous pairs of designer shoes. While the estate presented its challenges it also presented a learning opportunity for potential planned giving donors to interact through a silent auction and learn how they too could leave a lasting legacy.

Annual Business Meeting

Message from the ChairWelcome to the 2014 CASE District IV Annual Conference and business meeting. Your conference committee has worked incredibly hard for over a year to assemble an extraordinary program and provide opportunities for you to network and grow professionally. The tremendous response to this conference demonstrates the great need folks in our region have for professional development opportunities and that hopefully we are on the right track in meeting those needs.

CASE District IV is a totally volunteer-driven enterprise. When you review the list of Board members and Conference committee members, you will see that your volunteer leadership represents every corner of the district and every discipline within advancement. What may not be quite as evident is the number of hours they devote in support of District IV and our effort to advance our profession in the Southwest.

The District IV Board has developed a set of strategic priorities to guide in the work we plan over the next few years. Here’s a summary of the five general directions we have identified:

1. Seek opportunities to provide members with program opportunities outside of the annual conference2. Further incorporate technology to enhance service to members3. Ensure diversified growth of the profession and exposure to the CASE brand4. Maintain policies that ensure financial stability5. Build upon the success of the annual conference

We carry out this work as part of a tremendously strong international CASE organization and are working to integrate even better the programs we offer and the opportunities made possible by CASE International, led by President John Lippincott. While each CASE district has its own regional flavor, the one constant is the excellence that CASE has represented for decades.

I ask that you consider doing four things to support our efforts in District IV:

1. Take advantage of everything this conference has to offer, whether you are a veteran of professional conferences or a first-time CASE participant. The program, in particular, is broader than ever before and has something for everyone.2. Give us feedback about how we are doing. Don’t just fill out the program feedback questionnaire; visit with Board members or Conference committee members about what you liked and suggest ideas for improvement. 3. Get involved. Let someone know you’d like to be involved. There are lots of ways to help advance CASE IV, and we need as many volunteers as possible to carry out our myriad of programs. Most of the individuals who serve on the District Board started out in “entry level” volunteer positions.4. If you like what you see, please encourage others to join you in participating in CASE IV programs. We want to include as many people under the proverbial tent as possible.

Thanks again for your participation in this conference and in CASE District IV and for your contributions to advancing education in our region.

Best regards,

Jim LewisCASE IV District Chairjlewis@bbbstx.org

We have reviewed the accompanying statements of financial position of Council for Advancement and Support of Education - District IV (the Council) as of June 30, 2013 and 2012, and the related statements of activities and cash flows for the years then ended. A review includes primarily applying analytical procedures to management’s financial data and making inquiries of the Council’s management. A review is substantially less in scope than an audit, the objective of which is the expression of an opinion regarding the financial statements as a whole. Accordingly, we do not express such an opinion.

Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America and for designing, implementing, and maintaining internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements.

Our responsibility is to conduct the review in accordance with Statements on Standards for Accounting and Review Services issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Those standards require us to perform procedures to obtain limited assurance that there are no material modifications that should be made to the financial statements. We believe that the results of our procedures provide a reasonable basis for our report.

Based on our review, we are not aware of any material modifications that should be made to the accompanying financial statements in order for them to be in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

Savoie CEO Award Winner

After 33 years at Tulsa Community College, including a decade as its President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Thomas McKeon’s legacy reflects far more than his impressive years of service to higher education. Even more dramatically, he has made a commitment to the transformative impact of a college education and purposed himself to make its advantages accessible to individuals from all walks of life.

From adjunct instructor in horticulture, he went on to hold administrative roles in every area of TCC. Eventually he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the multi-campus college and, after an extensive national search, he was selected as the third President in TCC’s history.

Dr. McKeon earned his academic credentials as many community college students do – while he was working. Earning both a Master of Science degree and Doctorate at Oklahoma State University while on the job at TCC, he developed an understanding and affinity for working

adults who seek to improve their opportunities through higher education. In 2007, Dr. McKeon led the creation of the nationally recognized Tulsa Achieves program that has now resulted in the enrollment of more than 10,000 students who attended with no cost for tuition and fees.

Committed to transparency and communication, Dr. McKeon has supported significant growth in marketing, communication and advertising programs at TCC and encouraged expanded media access as well as an emphasis on new media and social media alternatives for student communication, recruitment and community engagement.

Dr. McKeon oversaw the development of a number of other key processes and programs for the College during his decade as President including:

A college wide energy audit that saves the College more than $1 million annually in energy costs;The creation and construction of the Metro Campus Center for Creativity designed to embrace rapid changes in curriculum delivery and merge a variety of academic disciplines to prepare students for the digital environment. The “C4C,” as it has come to be known, has won local, state and national awards for architecture design, as well as environmental design recognition;

Growth of the TCC Foundation expanding its assets from $1 million to more than $12 million in the past decade.

Dr. McKeon exemplifies integrity, commitment and collaboration and has led Tulsa Community College with a talent for effective administration and a vision for improving lives through education. The students, faculty, and staff of Tulsa Community College take great pride in the recognition of their president, Dr. Thomas McKeon, with the 2014 Dr. Joseph E. Savoie Chief Executive Leadership Award.

DR. THOMAS McKEON
