Eclipse Calculator mobile application developed by theUB.
Which future eclipses will be visible from mylocation? What will they be like? How long will theylast? These are some of the questions answeredby the new application Eclipse Calculator,designed by University of Barcelona researcherEduard Masana for Android mobiles.
Eclipse Calculator is an appealing tool for thosewho love astronomy; it is easy to use and providesinformation about all solar and lunar eclipses orplanetary transits from 1900 to 2100. Theapplication, public and free, can be downloadedfrom the Google Play website(https://play.google.com/store). It is currentlyavailable in Catalan, Spanish and English, butcreators plan to translate into even morelanguages.
"We aim at promoting the interest in general skyobservation and in these particular phenomena",remarks Eduard Massana, researcher from theInstitute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB, member of
the Department of Astronomy and Meteorology andof the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia.
The application provides global visibility maps, aswell as event details for any place in the world:beginning, end, duration, altitude of the Sun orMoon above the horizon, etc. The app also allowsusers to create simulations of the eclipse eventfrom each observational point.
