he Meadows, Snowy Range is the Spanish translation ofLas Vegas, Nevada. National Hispanic Heritage Month(September 15 – October 15) speaks to our region’s his-torical past and to a future where the success of the chil-dren of recent immigrants will define our economic com-petitiveness. To celebrate this important heritage, Vegas
PBS offers a wide range of historical and cultural programs on severalof our channels. Of particular note this month is the landmark docu-mentary series, Latino Americans, on Channel 10. This series will pres-ent personal portraits of struggle and triumph chronicling the experi-ences of Latinos who have shaped this country over the past 500 years.
While these programs reflect our past, the future is today's children.About half the children in our public schools have some Hispanic her-itage and about 20% of the children in our schools live in homes whereEnglish is not the dominant language. In response, the Nevada legisla-ture appropriated substantial new funding last session to assist chil-dren, parents and teachers of English Language Learners.
Vegas PBS supports these English Language Learners with 12 hoursof educational programming every weekday. This month, the new sea-son of Sesame Street premieres with its newest bilingual neighbor,Mando! Nielsen ratings indicate that in Hispanic homes with children, these daytime programs have huge audiences.
Today, our programs are delivered using all technologies: Vegas PBSprograms are "on demand" over the Internet and on Roku or xBox play-ers. The amazing PBSKids.org website offers our PBS TV characters ininteractive games that teach skills needed to succeed in school. PBSmobile phone applications are available for individual users and fami-lies without a home computer. The PBSParents.org website is availablein English and Spanish to provide parents with age-appropriate tips toencourage reading and advance math skills. Finally our Ready ToLearn/Raising Readers workshops offer face-to-face lessons on how toincorporate TV viewing, reading and activities. More than 800 work-shops were attended by over 120,000 kids and their families last year.
With ongoing viewer support, Vegas PBS is able to celebrate all cul-tures with inclusive and purposeful programming, and additional grantsupport makes it possible to also use technology to advance children'seducational achievement. Thank you for your investments in programservices that celebrate the history and impact the future of our com-munity.

Tiny HD cameras on the backs of trainedbirds captured amazing viewpoints thathave never been seen before, such as thatof a snow goose flying over New YorkHarbor toward the Statue of Liberty or abald eagle soaring through the GrandCanyon in search of food.
The work required to produce someimages involved what is known as “imprint-ing,” which involves raising a flock of birdsfrom birth. The process causes the birds toform a strong familial bond with the indi-vidual they regard as their mother. AvidFrench bird-enthusiast Christian Moullecraised a flock of geese, caring for themevery day and training them to accept hispiloted microlight as part of the family, sothat when they all took to the skies, he wasable to film close-up shots of the imprintedflock flying in tight formation as the geeseretraced the great journeys of wild birdsover Edinburgh and London.

To capture a view of the greatest gath-ering of wild flamingos seen in 20 years, the team employed a variety of spycams.Remote cameras were buried at a favoritedrinking spot by Kenya’s Lake Bogoria, while another camera was disguised as amini-flock of floating flamingos. eptember often brings thoughts of a new school year. For children a new school
year represents a time of change. Change for children coming in forms such as
a new teacher, new classmates, maybe a new school. For 45 years, Vegas PBS
has served as an important resource helping educate children.
Generations have been raised on PBS children’s programming and learned
many important lessons from Big Bird, Arthur and other favorite characters. Today, pro-
grams like Curious George, Martha Speaks, and Cyberchase continue to help children learn
while they are being entertained.
As technology continues to grow in our lives, Vegas PBS offers exciting online resources
for kids, parents and teachers extending learning anytime.
Vegas PBS uses the power of PBS children’s programming to extend learning through
our Ready To Learn project promoting literacy and health. Ready To Learn provided over
800 hundred workshops and sixty thousand
new books to at-risk students and families
last year throughout the community.
A healthy body is part of a healthy mind
and Vegas PBS Reading For Smiles helps
children maintain healthy dental hygiene.
The Vegas Keepings Kids Fit project pro-
motes a lifetime of healthy exercise and
nutrition habits. Both of these projects
have helped tens of thousands of children
and their families live healthier lives and
increase their readiness for school.
As part of Keeping Kids Fit, we will offer the 4th Annual Vegas PBS 5K Run and one mile
walk. Prizes, a commemorative shirt, free gifts, a DJ and lots of surprises make the event
a huge success. Proceeds from the event support Vegas PBS and the Keeping Kids Fit proj-
ect promoting a lifetime of healthy habits for kids and families. Resources range from
online components that can be accessed at VegasPBS.org/KKF, to thousands of exercise
and nutrition kits, instructional resources and workshops. All of this is done through col-
laborating with many public, private and corporate donors and we are grateful to them all.
We also would acknowledge our generous sponsors whose support is critical. Special thanks
to Dr. Joe and Joan Lapan, Wells Fargo, Health Care Partners of Nevada, MGM Resorts
International, Las Vegas Mexican Consulate, and The Southern Nevada Health District.
We hope you will join us and run for better health for yourself and for local children.
By working together you help all of us put our best foot forward!

Life in Cold BloodThursdays, September 5 and 12 at 8 p.m.
This fascinating and in-depth series con-cludes this month with the final twoepisodes that profile the most enduringlysuccessful animals on the planet. Reptilesand amphibians ruled the world for nearly200 million years and today there are morethan 14,000 varieties of them. How have they trans-formed themselves into the bizarre andbeautiful forms alive today? And what is thesecret of their epic success?
The very latest technology enablesextraordinary and previously unseen behav-ior to be captured in intimate detail, over-turning the myth that cold blooded life isslow and solitary, and revealing these crea-tures to be as dramatic, social, sophisticat-ed and passionate as warm-blooded ani-mals. This series will change your percep-tions forever – giving a new, warm-heartedrelationship with life in cold blood.September 5 Sophisticated Serpents

The narrative traces the birth of thenational park idea in the mid-1800s and fol-lows its evolution for nearly 150 years, using archival photographs, first-personaccounts of historical characters, personalmemories and analysis from more than 40interviews.

racing family roots has become a popular quest for mil-
lions of people around the world. Now, in the spirit of
Antiques Roadshow, Vegas PBS presents a fasci-
nating new series that is part detective story and part
emotional journey, combining history and science to uncover the fascinat-
ing stories of diverse Americans.
The premiere season will feature participants from four American
cities — Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco — who want to explore
unverified genealogical claims passed down through family history, that may (or may not) connect
them to an event or an historical figure. These cities were chosen as American crossroads of
culture, diversity, industry and history, with deep pools of potential participants and stories.
After participants are chosen, experts in genealogy, history and DNA will use family heirlooms,
letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down more information. Family and
community secrets are unearthed, notable relatives are revealed and unexpected stories are dis-
covered that connect the past to the present. Many answers will be revealed on camera before a
local audience, in a historic building relevant to the cities’ — and the participants’ — histories.

his new three-part series (Part 1 was scheduled on Sunday) is a modern, fast-paced
legal drama that follows the conflicts, passions and intrigues of criminal law. In this
week’s episode, Martha defends a vulnerable teenager. In a separate case at a police
tribunal, she is forced to defend a police officer accused of racism. As the pressure
continues to mount, Clive receives some astonishing news that could change not only his person-
al life, but life at chambers for everyone. Then next week, both Martha and Clive have their Silk
interviews and Martha takes on the biggest case of her life: defending a repeat offender on a
murder charge at the Old Bailey. When the case begins to fall apart, Martha struggles to remain

American Masters: Billie Jean King Tuesday, September 10 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1
his new documentary traces the incredible life of the single most important female
athlete of the 20th century as her 70th birthday nears, and commemorates the 40th
anniversaries of the Billie Jean King v. Bobby Riggs “The Battle of the Sexes” match
on Sept. 20, 1973, and the founding of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) by King
on June 20 of that year. The 12-year-old Long Beach, California, girl who played tennis on public
courts, observed disparity and, as she soared athletically, never stopped trying to remedy inequal-
ity. Through these interviews and archival footage, the film illustrates the life of a woman whose
journey became not just a battle for personal glory but a sociopolitical battle for equality for all.

Wild Africa Thursdays at 8 p.m. beginning September 19on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1
frica is the mother continent, the core from which all the other continents were
torn away 100 million years ago. This mighty block of land has stayed in much the
same place — it stands alone and it straddles the equator. It has also been pro-
tected from crippling ice ages and destructive invasions as well as nurtured by
gentle changes in climate and geology. As a result, animals and plants have flourished here more
successfully than on any other continent. This is Africa — rich, diverse, fascinating, and the heart
of the world. Influenced by climate and geology, time has allowed Africa to accumulate the breath-
taking variety of wildlife we see today. This week’s episode explores the mountains of Africa,
traveling to the top of the greatest of them all, Kilimanjaro.

This lavish new series presents filmed adaptations of four of Shakespeare’s most grip-
ping history plays; Richard II, Henry IV, Parts I and II and Henry V. The films — chroni-
cling a bloody tale of family, politics and power — tell the rise and fall of three Kings
and how their destiny shaped English history. Richard II (Ben Whishaw) is a vain, self-
indulgent man who rules with little regard for his people’s welfare. He is ultimately overthrown by
his cousin Bolingbroke (Rory Kinnear), who ascends the throne as Henry IV (Jeremy Irons). Henry
IV’s reign is marred by his own guilt over Richard’s death, civil war, and the gnawing fear that his
son Hal (Tom Hiddleston) is a total wastrel unworthy of the throne. When Hal comes to the throne
as Henry V he is left to bury the ghosts of his father’s past while fighting both the French forces
as well as his own inner demons.

Independent Lens: Don’t Stop Believin’:Everyman’s Journey Monday, September 30 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1
or Arnel Pineda, the past five years have been the stuff of dreams. Neal Schon, gui-
tarist for the iconic rock band Journey, saw a YouTube video of the aspiring Filipino
singer and flew him to San Francisco to audition for the band. Becoming the front
man for the legendary group, Pineda’s personal journey had just begun. He wasn’t
prepared for the grueling physical and emotional strains that come with fronting a
rock band on a whirlwind world tour, navigating the pressures of replacing a legendary singer and
leading a world-renowned band on their most extensive world tour in years. Can a man who has
overcome many obstacles — orphaned at 12, living on the streets, no musical training — deal with
the demands of his newfound fame?

This special explores this shadow world of assistedsuicide, where the lines between legality and criminality are blurred. It takes viewers inside one ofthe most polarizing social issues of our time — told bythe people choosing to die, and by their “assisters,”individuals and right-to-die organizations at risk ofprosecution for their actions.
A very special THANK YOUto all who contributed to the success of our August 2013Fundraising Campaign
