Some of You Know the Story of The Great Sun Ball Made from Clary Granite

In 1914, it was said to have been the largest granite

sphere in the world!

From 1914 to 1946, it stood on the campus of

Columbia University

It was the pointer, or gnomon, of a sundial.

1914

In 1944, a crack was discovered in the sphere.

The Gnomon was removed from the Sundial, December 1946.

The New York Times reported that the ball had broken into pieces.

But we know that the ballwas returned to the Clarystone yard in the Bronx.

1961–installation in Michigan 2006

Where is it now?
