Dr. Antonis Malagardis MIPSS, Programme Manager
What is KAPWA?
This notion of ‘shared Self” extends the I to include the Other. It bridges the deepest individual recess of a person with anyone
outside him or herself, even total strangers
The core of Filipino personhood is ‘kapwa’
Individuals who are guided by ‘Kapwa’ can be recognized by their genuine, people-centered orientation, their service to
those around them and their commitment to their communities.
They are quick to lend a hand and share their skills and knowledge freely by teaching children, working with the poor or
facilitating workshops and discussions. Their help usually comes with a BIG SMILE.
