Do you know the name of this insect?

That’s right! It is a butterfly.

A butterfly goes through something

called “metamorphosis.”

Metamorphosis is another word for

“change.”

This change happens during a butterfly’s

life cycle.

There are FOUR stages of a butterfly’s

life cycle.

STAGE ONE: egg

A female butterfly lays eggs on a leaf.

STAGE TWO: caterpillar

Caterpillars hatch from the egg. They are

hungry and eat many leaves!

STAGE THREE: chrysalis

A caterpillar makes a chrysalis out of silk and

goes inside of it.

STAGE FOUR: butterfly

A butterfly comes out of the chrysalis!

After the butterfly leaves the chrysalis, it lays

new eggs!

This means…new butterflies!!
