How did the Black Death spread to/across Europe?

• Analyze one side of the map handout and answer the questions!

• If you are having trouble seeing the map, I will provide a color one for you on the powerpoint…

• When finished, share with your partner and discuss:– Do you think the black death was

unavoidable?

How did the Black Death spread to Europe?

- Trade routes (The Silk Road)! Mongols spread it to China, Middle East, India- Battles also helped the disease spread. As

Mongols fought with Christians, they catapulted dead bodies into Christian cities

- This is our first example of “germ warfare” in history

And how did it spread ACROSS Europe?

And how did it spread ACROSS Europe?

• 1348-A boat arrived (from Constantinople) to Messina Italy

• Everyone on board was dead• As people took the goods off the boats, the

germs (and rats) started to spread• People didn’t know what caused the spread and

just kept trading • European cities were so dirty and that did not

help!• But certain communities, like the Jews, were

more isolated and had cleaner daily practices, so they were not affected as much.

How did the Plague affect society, religion and the economy?
