9.10 How did WWII affect people living in the USA?

USA fought in WWII: December 8, 1941 – August 15, 1945

Rationing – allowed only a small amount of something, usually during war.

Gas was rationed in NYC during Hurricane Sandy – cars with even license plates could only get gas on certain days.

Modeling – Expert Group

Expert Group1) Read the article alone.2) Write down your answers to questions 1-3 on a

piece of recycled paper.3) Share your answers with your group in a Round

Robin format:- One at a time, in a circle- No one interrupts- No one passes…say, “I also think that…”

4) Agree about what you should write on your worksheet.

5) Have Ms. Trono check your responses before you write it in your worksheet.

Homework

• Complete the reading and write your answers on your recycled paper! NOT ON YOUR WORKSHEET!

Do Now – 4/9/13

Today, we will work in small groups and share what we read.

What does successful small group work sound and look like?

Field Trip

• Bring in your permission slips by FRIDAY if you want to go on the field trip April 23 (Tuesday after break)

Objectives – we will:

• Share what we identified from our readings about how Americans were affected from the war

• Reach a consensus about worksheet responses

• Identify other ways Americans were affected and recording notes in small groups

Agenda

• Do Now (5)• Share Out (5)• Consensus Building (22)• Base Group (23)• HW/Wrap-up (5)

Expert Group

1) Share your answers with your group- One at a time, in a circle- No one interrupts- No one passes…say, “I also think that…”

4) Agree about what you should write on your worksheet.

5) Have Ms. Trono check your responses before you write it in your worksheet.

Now, we will share what we read, so we can get a better sense of how

people in the USA were affected by WWII.

Base Group1) Share what you wrote.2) 1 person speaks at a time. Make eye contact

with others. 3) After the person shares, other people can ask

questions.4) You may not copy from a paper – you must

listen and record answers. You are practicing listening and speaking skills – you are showing what you know by explaining it.

5) Speak in complete sentences, but write in note form.

Homework

• Summary for 9.11- How were people living in the United States affected by WWII?

Do Now – 4/10/13Compare and contrast two of the groups you

learned about yesterday by drawing a Venn Diagram. Put at least 2 things in each part of the circle.

If you were absent yesterday, please ask Ms. Trono for a handout to read.

Objectives – We will:

• Identify how different groups experienced WWII in the United States

• Sort and Label oral histories of Americans• Evaluate whether or not WWII was a good war

for most Americans living in the USA• Demonstrate our understanding by writing a

postcard to a solider fighting in Asia or Europe.

Agenda, Periods 3, 5

Agenda, Periods 3, 5

• Do Now (5) • Turn and Talk (5)• Re-group + Notes (8)• Categorizing (15)• Good War? (5)• Mini-Project Work (17)• Wrap-up/HW (5)

Turn and Talk

• Share your answer with someone sitting next to you.

• Be prepared to share what you discussed.

Which group? Categorizing Oral Histories

1) Read and sort each oral history.2) Be prepared to explain why you think each

quote goes in a certain category.

Model

• “we were shipped overseas. On board, blacks had their quarters and the whites had theirs. We didn’t associate with one another. Different mess halls, different everything. We zigzagged our way all across the Atlantic, because of German subs. We stayed in Wales, getting ready for the invasion.”

Was the WWII a good war for people who were living in the

United States?
