Our Recipe: Semiconducting Oxide Powder

We want to produce Semiconducting Oxide Nanomaterials!

Dr. Z.L. Wang (UAPT PI)Material Science & EngineeringGeorgia Institute of Technology

Our Technique: HVPG • Horizontal Vapor Phase Growth Technique

MOTIVATION• Grow high purity materials • Source material is powder of any form• Greater quantity with less source

material• No gas molecules in between• Versatility in composition of deposit • Produces unusual microstructures• Eliminate pollutants

What will I do with the heater?

Let’s Cook: Our Recipe and Ingredients

• A small amount of Semiconducting Oxide powder was loaded in a close-end quartz tube

• Was attached to the High Vacuum System for sealing at 10-6 Torr

• Let’s Bake!• The sealed quartz tube

was placed in a tube furnace set with the desired growth temperature

900ºC 700ºC 400ºC

Nanobelts

• Nanobelts are have a well-defined geometrical shape and side surfaces.

• Typical widths is in the range of 50 to 300 nm • Thicknesses are 10 to 30 nm.

Physics Society of the Philippines (Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas)

• The Nanobelts were featured in the first Physics Journal in the Philippines

Two-probe measurements of electric conductance of Nanobelts under ambient temperature

The electric conductance of the nanobelt depends on the type and amount of molecules adsorbed on its

surface

High Resolution SEM image of the SnO2 Nanomaterial • The surface of the

SnO2 nanomaterial is porose and composed of many uniform crystalline grains.

• It suggests that this nanomaterial is suitable for fabricating gas sensors because of the porosity over large surface.

Photoluminescence of SnO2 Nanomaterials

• SnO2 Nanomaterial was excited with a UV lamp

• The luminescence was a blue visible light emission.

2009 International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project (I-SWEEEP) Olympiad in Houston, Texas

Simon Anthony Lorenzo and Hannah Carize Sangalang won a silver medal for the Philippines with their project entitled “Development of Carbon Nanomaterial as an Electrode Voltage Source” in the Senior Engineering category
