The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers
Question # 15: Why do we call the presence of Christ in the Eucha-
rist a "mystery"?
The word "mystery" is commonly used to refer to something that escapes
the full comprehension of the human mind. In the Bible, however, the
word has a deeper and more specific meaning, for it refers to aspects of
God's plan of salvation for humanity, which has already begun but will be
completed only with the end of time. In ancient Israel, through the Holy
Spirit God revealed to the prophets some of the secrets of what he was
going to accomplish for the salvation of his people (cf. Am 3:7; Is 21:28;
Dan 2:27-45). Likewise, through the preaching and teaching of Jesus, the
mystery of "the Kingdom of God" was being revealed to his disciples (Mk
4:11-12). St. Paul explained that the mysteries of God may challenge our
human understanding or may even seem to be foolishness, but their
meaning is revealed to the People of God through Jesus Christ and the
Holy Spirit (cf. 1 Cor 1:18-25, 2:6-10; Rom 16:25-27; Rev 10:7). The Eu-
charist is a mystery because it participates in the mystery of Jesus Christ
and God's plan to save humanity through Christ. We should not be sur-
prised if there are aspects of the Eucharist that are not easy to under-
stand, for God's plan for the world has repeatedly surpassed human ex-
pectations and human understanding (cf. Jn 6:60-66). For example, even
the disciples did not at first understand that it was necessary for the Mes-
siah to be put to death and then to rise from the dead (cf. Mk 8:31-33,
9:31-32, 10:32-34; Mt 16: 21-23, 17:22-23, 20:17-19; Lk 9:22, 9:43-45,
18:31-34). Furthermore, any time that we are speaking of God we need to
keep in mind that our human concepts never entirely grasp God. We must
not try to limit God to our understanding, but allow our understanding to
be stretched beyond its normal limitations by God's revelation.

Cleansed Lepers
Just Can’t Keep
Quiet!
First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2,44-46 The Law regarding leprosy is given to Moses and Aaron.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 32:1-2,5,11 A prayer of contrition and confession for sin.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:31—11:1 Paul urges the Corinthians to imitate him as he imitates Christ.
Gospel Reading: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus cures a person with leprosy, who reports his cure to everyone.
Background on the Gospel Reading: In today’s Gospel, we continue to hear Mark report the miraculous healings that Jesus performed in Galilee. The Gospel begins with Jesus healing a man with leprosy. Leprosy is a disfiguring, infectious skin disease that has been surrounded by many social and religious taboos throughout history. In 1873, the cause of lepro-sy, also known as Hansen’s disease, was identified. We now know that leprosy is caused by a bacterial infection. Although it is infectious, modern medical studies have shown that transmission is more difficult than previ-ously thought. Since the 1940s, medical treatments have been available, and the patient no longer needs to be isolated once long-term treatment has begun. In Jesus’ time, however, religious and social taboos dictated the behavior of those with leprosy and other skin diseases. The Law of Moses provided for the examination of skin diseases by the priests, and if leprosy was identified, the person was declared unclean. People with leprosy lived in isolation from the community. They were instructed to rip their clothes and to announce their presence with loud cries when moving in the community. If the sores of leprosy healed, the Law of Moses provided a purification rite that permitted the person to return to the community. In today's Gospel, the man with leprosy took the initiative, approaching Jesus and asking for healing. In doing so, the leper violated the religious customs of the day by approaching a person who was clean. His request to Jesus can be interpreted as a courageous and daring act. The confi-dence of the leper in Jesus' ability to heal him is evident in the words of his request. But his words can also be read as a challenge to Jesus, asking just how far Jesus was willing to extend himself in order to heal someone. While healing the man, Jesus touched him, which also violated estab-lished social norms. This is an important sign of the depth of Jesus' com-passion for the man and an important statement about Jesus' interpreta-tion of the Law of Moses. Although Jesus touched the leper, he did not break completely with the Law of Moses. He instructed the man not to tell anyone about the cure and told him to present himself to the priests as prescribed by the Law of Mo-ses. The first instruction sounds nearly impossible to honor. Certainly, the man would want to share the good news of his healing, and his quick im-provement would require an explanation. The second instruction honors the Law of Moses. Mark's Gospel tells us that after this healing, it became difficult for Jesus to travel freely. There are several possible explanations for this. There might have been concern about the repercussions of Jesus' breach of social and religious norms. In touching the man with leprosy, Jesus made himself unclean. Mark's narrative, however, leads to the con-clusion that Jesus' movement was hampered by his popularity. Despite his instructions, the cured man spread the word about Jesus' healing power. Even when Jesus was in deserted places, people sought him out in search of his healing.

The Lord Jesus, who healed the leper, is ready to bring his grace to all
those in need. Through him, therefore, we now pray to the Father.
That the Church may be an instrument of God’s mercy through her
mission and outreach to those most in need.
That God Himself will be the protector of each of the priests serving in
the Diocese of Sacramento.
For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese
of Sacramento, that they will serve according to the heart of Christ.
For all who depend on our generosity in the Annual Catholic Appeal:
those who need assistance and all those who work tirelessly in the
charitable organizations and parish outreach ministries that serve them.
That the leaders of the world who have the task of governing may carry
out their duties with justice and maintain peace among nations.
That Scripture's teaching that our lives and bodies belong to the Lord
may increase our reverence for all human life, and our awareness that
only God can give it or take it away.
That we may imitate our Lord's compassionate care for the sick, and
show them that their lives are just as precious and valuable as when
they are healthy.
That those who have died may be received into the joy of God’s king-
dom.
Remembering the Sick in Prayer
Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers
for the sick members of our community and for
all who are in need. Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consolation n your heal-
ing presence. Show your mercy as you close
wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spir-
its. May these special people find lasting health and deliverance and so
join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord
Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen.

Spring 40 Days for Life-Come pray for just an hour and save a LIFE!
The Spring 2018 40 Days for Life prayer vigil begins on February 14th in hun-
dreds of cities around the world, including several in our Diocese. Christians will
pray and offer assistance on the sidewalk, from 8am to 6 pm Monday—Friday,
from February 14th to March25th. This life-saving, peaceful, prayerful ministry is
endorsed by Bishop Soto who encourages all Catholics to participate. By God’s
grace over 13,998 women world wide have changed their minds, choosing LIFE
for their babies rather than abortion because of people praying at the sidewalk.
Fr. Art Wehr, S.J. will celebrate the Sacramento 40 Days Opening Mass at 8:00
am on Monday, February 12, at St. Ignatius Parish in Sacramento. All are wel-
come to attend.
The Sacramento Vigil will beheld at FPA Women’s Health, 2322 Butano Drive,
Sacramento. Other 40 Days for Life locations within the diocese of Sacramento
include Redding, Chico, Yuba City, and Fairfield. Please visit
www.40daysforlife.com for more information about each site.

Each Sunday, a family, couple, or individual is called forward at Mass to receive the voca-
tion cross and a special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the cross, they commit
themselves to pray during the week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of our
priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are invited to participate.
To see who has signed up and to those who have not signed up yet; please stop by and check out our SIGN -
UP CORNER at the Narthex counter top. Please take the Vocation Cross home with you. We need families to
accept this prayer mission at all Masses Saturday Vigil, Sunday 7:30, 9:30 and 12:30 Masses
Is God inviting you to Pray for the Vocations?
Please pray for all of the Sacramento Diocese Priests.
Our Dear Parishioners,
The Legion of Mary will soon be conducting home visitations to make personal contact
with families living around Divine Mercy Catholic Church and its parish boundaries. We
look forward to making your acquaintance, listening to your faith needs and concerns, and bringing to your doors information about the pastoral and sacra-
mental services of Divine Mercy Catholic Church. Most importantly, we cheerfully bring the gentle love of Christ to you through the sweet spirit of Mary. We
begin our visits on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Prayerfully, with the guidance of our Blessed Mother, she who is full of grace, a faithful chan-
nel of the Holy Spirit, these visits will continue once a month, year-round until we have successfully visited every home in the parish. Will you let Jesus
Christ and Mother Mary into your home? Your humble legionaries of the Praesidium of Our Lady of Divine Mercy
The 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal is our annual tradition that con-
nects us to thousands of people who need our help every day. Our
generous gifts to the Appeal help children find safety and hope,
families break through desperate situations, marginalized individu-
als find the strength to rebuild lives of dignity, students in econom-
ically challenged communities remain in Catholic school, and semi-
narians prepare for priestly service in our parishes. We may not be
social workers, yet we are at the heart of mercy when we put our
resources in the hands of social service programs and parish minis-
tries that help lift people out of poverty. Please be as generous as
you can. Every gift makes a difference.
