Coastal livelihood are badly hampered by cyclones and storm surge
o Bangladeshi cost is vulnerable to strong intensity of cyclones and storm surges
o Costal housing sector of Bangladesh is highly affected by cyclones and storm surges
o Total housing damage was estimated BDT.57.9 billion(US$ 839 million) Nearly
537,775 house holds’ dwelling(15%) of the 3.5 million house holds were completely
destroyed by SIDR.
o 854,224 (24%) were partially damaged by SIDR

Preventive Measure
How can we protect housing of coastal households from natural hazards like floods, cyclones, storm surges….?
Smart Answer: Goedesic dome Goodesic dome is created by connecting a mesh of triangular panels together in order to closely resemble a hemisphere It is similar to the rooftop dome of the mosque or shell-like structure without supporting interior columns It is constructed under the consideration of proper distribution of wind loads, static loads and pressure on the surface

Effectiveness & Benefits of Geodesic Dome
2V frequency dome is more effective for 2 or 3 bed rooms, porch,
toilet, cooking space, rainwater harvesting tank for emergency usage
and entry space
It is convenient & suitable for small households
It is more energy efficient and minimize the wastage of land
Household can also use ground space of the dome such as living,
cattle house and warehouse
Its construction cost is very low
12
Objectives
To find out the determinants of geodesic dome
To evaluate the effectiveness of a 2V frequency geodesic dome
with respect to sensitivity (cost-benefit) analysis

Policy Implications
Government intervention, perception and motivation of coastal people are highly required for
more construction of geodesic dome in the coastal region of Bangladesh.
Government can and provide housing loan and other institutional support to the poor coastal
people for construction of geodesic dome.
Government and NGOs can encourage coastal people through procession, demonstration and
media to demonstrate the benefits of geodesic domes.
Engineering institutions and department are working as a key actor to provide appropriate
guidelines to construct geodesic domes in the coastal region of Bangladesh.
