Weather Forecast Synoptic Situation: Monsoon axis runs through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across central part of Bangladesh. One of its associated trough extends to North Bay. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay. Forecast: Light to moderate rain/T. showers accompanied by tempo. gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka & Khulna divisions with moderately heavy falls at places. Actions Taken based on information from field

855 medical teams have been formed to provide health services support to flood affected areas. 122 teams in Kurigram, 10 in Jamalpur, 45 in Gaibandha, 14 in Bogra, 82 in Sirajganj, 283 in Chittagong, 113 in Cox’s Bazar, 2 in Bandarban, 157 in Sylhet and 26 teams are working in Sunamganj. Necessary health services and medicines are being provided through these medical teams. DO letter has been issued to Ministry of Health to form medical team, provide necessary medicine including water purification tablet, oral saline to Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur, Sirajganj Sunamganj and other flood affected areas

DO letter has been issued to Ministry of Agriculture to distribute “Aman” seed, to Ministry of Education and Ministry of Primary and Mass Education to distribute text books to the students and to clean classrooms by bleaching powder and to Ministry of Local Government Division and Rural Development and Cooperative to clean water of tube well and well, urgently.

Letter has been issued to the Ministry of Information to broadcast “Things to Do Before, During and After Flood” in TV channels, to Food Division to distribute “Atop” rice to Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban and to SPARRSO to produce satellite map of

Flood Outlook

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Padma are in falling trend which may continue while the Ganges is in rising trend which may continue during next 24 hours.

The upper Meghna river system is in rising trend which may continue during next 24 hours.

All water level monitoring stations are flowing below their respective Danger Level.

District wise Flood Situation Flood Situation in North and Middle Region of the Country: Kurigram Water level of all the rivers is flowing under the danger level. Water is receding continuously. Flood situation is improving. Previously Vurungamari, Rajibpur, Nageshwri, Fulbari, Sadar, Ulipur, Chilmari and Low land and 58 Char area’s unions of Roumari were flooded and water logged due to the upstream water and heavy rainfall for last few days. Total 69 shelters were opened for the affected people. 289 people are still remained into 4 shelters at Chilmari Upazilla. Rest of the people returned to their own home. District administration allocated 1610.700 MT GR rice and 2500000 Taka to distribute among the affected people of those Upazillas. Gaibandha Flood situation is normal. All the rivers are flowing below the danger level. 30 unions of 5 upazilla and 1 ward of the low land of gaibandha sadar are already inundated previously. 3 people died of flood. 1500000 taka and 491 MT rice are sub-allocated to distribute among the affected people of these upazillas. Relief activities are ongoing.

Bogra Situation is normal now. All the rivers are flowing below the danger level. Water receded from the flooded areas. Low land of Sariakandi, Dhunot and Sonatola upazila were flooded previously. People from low laying areas of flood affected unions who had taken shelter on local school, flood shelter and embankment made by Water Development Board returned to their homes. 1 people died due to flood. District administration has allocated 123.280 MT GR rice for the people of flood affected upazilas. Jamalpur Flood situation is improved. Water level of all the rivers is flowing below the danger level. 40 unions and 3 Purashava of 7 upazillas including Deoanganj, Islampur, Sadar, Madarganj, Melandah, Sarishabari, and Bakshiganj were inundated previously. 1 people died in the district. People previously had taken shelter into embankment and road already returned to their own home. 258.00 MT rice and 1500000 Taka are allocated by district administration for instant distribution. Relief distribution is ongoing. Sirajganj The Jamuna is receding and flowing below danger level. Flood situation is improved. Previously, low lands and char areas of Kazipur, Sadar, Raiganj, Ullapara, Shahjadpur, Kamarkhand, Belkuchi, Chouhali and Tarash upazilla were inundated. Total 52 shelters opened where 5745 people took shelter but now people are returning to their own home. Currently 2010 people remained into shelters. 1 person died due to flood. 467 MT Rice and BDT 1101000 have been allocated for distribution among affected of different upazila. Relief activity is ongoing. The situation is under observation and monitoring by district administration. Flash Flood Situation in North-East Region of the Country: Sylhet: Flood situation is improving in all upazilas. The Surma and the Kushiara are continuing to recede and flowing below the danger level. 1532 sq. km areas of 12 upazilas are inundated. Total death is 3. All people returned from 69 shelters opened previously for flood. 157 medical teams were formed but now 70 teams are providing health related support to flood affected people. Affected all people are getting treatment. GR Rice 809.420 MT, GR Cash BDT 2327400 and House building grant BDT 56000 have been allocated by the District Administration. Relief activity is continuing. Sunamganj The Surma is receding and flowing below the danger level. Situation is getting normal. Previously 23 unions of Chatak, Doarabazar and Biswambarpurupazila inundated as water level of surma increased due to upstream torrential water. 69 MT Rice and BDT 400000 have been allocated for the affected 3 upazilas. Relief operation is continuing. Flash Flood and Hill slide Situation in South-East Region of the Country Chittagong Flood situation is normal now. Low land areas of 8 upazillas were inundated previously due to the heavy rainfall, upstream water from hills and the breach of embankment. Total death toll is 37. Total1001.500 MT GR rice and BDT 60,00,000 GR cash have been distributed among the affected people of those affected upazilas including the city corporation. District administration is continuing relief activities.

Cox’s Bazar Situation is normal now. Previously low land areas of 8 upazillas were inundated due to heavy rainfall and upstream water. Total 47 people (Landslide-24, Lightening-05, Wall collapse-05 and drowned to water-13) died due to landslide, wall collapse, lightening and drowned to water. A total of BDT 940000 provided to the 47 deceased family where BDT 20000 to the each family. 689 MT GR Rice and BDT 2890672 have been distributed among affected people. Along with this 205 sack flatten rice, 100 molasses, 200 pcs Saree, 100 pcs lungi have been distributed among affected. 58000 affected people from 137 shelters already returned to their home. Relief operation is continuing by the District administration. Bandarban Overall situation is improved. Water receded from all areas. Due to heavy rainfall and upstream water since 25-06-2012 low land of 7 Upazillas were inundated. and 47,077 people of 12,215 families are affected. 38 people are dead due to hill slide. People previously taken shelter have returned to their own house from the 19 shelters. Relief activities are ongoing by district administration. 1431500 taka and 345 MT rice is sub-allocated to distribute among the affected people. Under VGF programme 2432.01 MT VGF Rice has been allocated to 81,067 families of

Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban. (30kg monthly each family). Disaster Management and Relief Division allocated 28,841 pcs of tarpaulin, 1735 pcs of

plastic sheets, 749 pcs blue-sheets, 2,546 Sharee and 15 sack old cloths to flood affected districts Chittagong, Cox’s bazar, Bandarban, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj, and Jamalpur.

Things to Do in Flood [English version]

Pre Flood

Decide a place where you will take shelter and move your properties.

Decide what to do to protect cattle and valuable properties.

Keep stock of puffed and flattened rice and molasses.

Keep communications with Disaster Management Committee and volunteers and seek for their advice and help.

During Flood

If any household inundated, take space in nearest highland, embankment or shelter.

Drink water from tubewell. If tubewell is not available, in that case drink boiled water or use water purification tablet or fitkiri.

Know the location of the nearest medical team around your location and ask for help if required.

Keep the cap of bottle containing of carbolic acid open. Place pieces of soap mixed with carbolic acid in different places of home. This will prevent snakes to enter into the house.

Help government and non-government relief distributing agency.

Communicate with Disaster Management Committees of flood affected villages to form volunteer team to keep your area and property safe.

Keep the crop seed in safe and dry place.

Prevent fishes to wash way from flooded ponds by putting tree branches on the pond water surface.

After Flood

Return to own home as soon as water recedes and prepare the household to live.

Start cultivating in your own land. Take help from agriculture officers to cultivate such crop that can be produced in shortest possible time.

Many diseases (like typhoid, Diarrhea, dysentery) may spread out after flood, so take preparation with proper medication. Take vaccine or injections as required.

Contact with Up Chairman and members or volunteers to rebuild damaged household if required.

After water recedes check and take out all the fishes. Then apply 1 kg calcium hydroxide (locally known as chun)

Aman paddy can be sowed taken from a land that has not been inundated.
