Who is DISARM?

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

DISARM: a H2020 thematic network

• Thematic networks = compiling knowledge ready for practice

• collecting existing scientific knowledge and best practices which are close to being put into practice, but not yet sufficiently ready for farmers and foresters to implement;

• translating this knowledge into easily understandable end-user material such as short, informative recommendations and solutions (“practice abstracts”), leaflets, guidelines and audio-visual material (photos, video clips, etc.)

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

DISARM: ideas and assumptions

• Strong link between level of use and antibiotic resistance;

• As little as possible, as much as necessary;• Reduce, replace, rethink;• From disseminating solutions to disseminating methods to identify the solutions for a specific context;

• From external motivation towards internal motivation;• From focus on farmers to focus on the entire complex of actors and factors.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

Strong link between the level of use and antibiotic resistance

• EC calls for more prudent use, a usage that causes less antibiotic resistance

• Evidence says• Strong link between level of use and antibiotic resistance

more prudent often means a reduction• Level of usage is often more habit rather than clear

deliberation based on health status and risk focus on people’s behaviour and motivation

• Production, health and welfare can be maintained with much less antibiotics better management, biosecurity, good husbandry practice

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

As little as possible, as much as necessary

• Zero use is not the final aim• Reducing actual usage to as little as possible, as much as necessary

• Reducing the need forantibiotics

• Farm-specific improvement• Level of usage but also quality of usage

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

• Reduce: motivation, knowledge awareness to as little as possible, as much as necessary

• Replace: vaccines, probiotics, prebiotics, bacteriophages and organic acids

• Rethink: biosecurity, husbandry practices, production systems

Reduce, replace, rethink

Disseminating solutions and methods toidentify the best solution

• We look for solutions in better preventive livestock health management

• Solutions can• Be farm-specific• Be production system specific• Be context-specific• Evolve

• Knowledge dissemination evolves from disseminatingsolutions to also disseminating methods to identify thebest solution in a specific context for a specific farm

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

From external motivation towards internalmotivation

• Thematic network = learning network• People show more positive learning outcomes whenthey start feeling more and more internally motivated

• A learning network should create circumstances thatsupport internal motivation

• Pilot supporting mechanisms for advisory and transfer of technology

• Stress additional benefits such as welfare and economicperformance

• Without necessarily giving up external motivators

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

From focus on farmers to focus on the entirecomplex of actors and factors

• All stakeholders involved have to participate• Farmers• Veterinarian• Advisors• Suppliers• Buyers• Government

• Designing solutions, disseminating solutions, creatingenabling environment, creating alternatives, changingmind-set is done in multi-actor environment

• Why promoting this approach?• How we want to promote it?• Importance of coaching?• Promising results from research and practice

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

Why promoting the approach?

We believe:• Sustainable livestock farming ≠ using antibiotics as cover-up

for suboptimal managementBut

• Reducing the need for AB is more than just cutting its use!It requires:

• A knowledge-intensive process • Rethinking farm specific management practices and farm

organization• Break routines and change behavior• Change perceptions and presumptions

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

Why promoting the approach?

• Farm improvement can benefit because of:

• Different sources of knowledge of farmer, vet, (feed)advisor• Synergy in team discussion has added value over individual

consultations• Shared ownership, motivation and accountability from

teamwork• Coherent and streamlined advice in a tailor-made action plan• Support from other team members for the farmer in making

the change

Focus on coaching in DISARM

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 817591

Disseminating Innovative Solutions for Antibiotic Resistance Management

Why focus on coaching?

• Coaching: • Helping a person make a change in the desired direction in a

desirable manner• Bring out the potential to improve performance • Building awareness• Motivate choices • Leads to change

• ABU reduction is demanding on farmer:• Sustain management changes• Sustain behavioural changes

• ABU reduction tailored to specific context of the farm

Presentation Notes

Need for coaching?

• Dr. M Postma at AACTING• Coaching needed to:

• change perception, • create awareness • create desire, • build knowledge and ability• reinforce change of ABU

Success of farm specific action plans for AB reduction

• Reduction of AMU without adverse effects on animal health and productivity is possible

Prerequisites:

• Adjusting management practices in a team effort. • Fostering good collaboration among farmer,

veterinarian, and feed adviser• Focusing on limited number of objectives to

ensure success of the animal health planning program and antimicrobial use.

CONCLUSIONS META-ANALYSIS

Clear risk factors were found:

Housing: floor quality; ventilation; type of light at loading and intensity of light

Infectious: E.coli; coccidiosis and dysbacteriosis

Management: level of professionalism; feed withdrawal time and light adaptations

Adaptations of management, housing and health programs are beneficial

Overall conclusions

Data-collection is of high importance for a poultry vet andfarmer:

To identify potential factors to improve poultry health To adapt veterinary protocols and prevent disease To help the poultry industry in decreasing AB usage

The interpretation of the collected data is crucial and thepoultry vet plays a key role!
