Directory of Postdoctoral Training Programs

With Training Opportunities in Primary Care Psychology

This directory was developed by the American Psychological Association Education Directorate to assist students

interested in education and training in primary care psychology. We would like to thank Drs. William Gunn, Matt

Martin, and Nancy Ruddy for their invaluable assistance.

Description: The following directory is a list of internship, postdoctoral, and doctoral training programs that offer training in primary care psychology. Information regarding internship

and postdoctoral training programs was collected through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers’ (APPIC) website (www.appic.org) and through the websites of each

of the programs listed below. Each internship and postdoctoral program was chosen for this directory based on its identification in the APPIC Directory as providing “Major Supervised

Experience in Primary Care”. Information for doctoral training programs was collected using a survey that was emailed to program directors of APA accredited doctoral programs. And may not

be a complete list of doctoral programs that offer training in primary care psychology. Programs are listed alphabetically. Blank cells indicate that information for that category was not

available. Please contact the training director of each program for additional and updated information.

Key:

PC-P = Primary Care Psychology PC-P Model = this includes key words that describe the model of primary care psychology used within each program

Level of PC-P Experience – Internship and Postdoctoral Programs

Major = Two or more major rotations (16-40 hours per week) in primary care

Emphasis = One major rotation (16-40 hours per week) in primary care

Experience = One or more minor rotations (1 day a week) in primary care

Exposure = Limited introduction (1-4 hours per week) to primary care

Last Updated on 06/2015

Level of PC-P Experience – Doctoral Programs

Major Area of Study = highest level of education and training opportunity with respect to both the types of knowledge, skills and attitudes that would be developed and the intensity and

amount of involvement in training to acquire those competencies (example, 2-3 years of didactics, supervised experience, and dissertation or research project in primary care)

Emphasis = the level below Major Area of Study, and permits a structured, in depth opportunity for knowledge acquisition and practical experience in a specialty area (ex., 4 courses and 2

practica)

Experience = falls between Emphasis and Exposure; the type and intensity of the training opportunity goes beyond simply acquainting a student with a specialty (ex., 1-2 courses and a

practicum)

Exposure = represents an education and training opportunity that is limited in type and intensity, but is identified by the program as a structured activity and would be seen as an

opportunity to acquaint an individual with that specialty area (ex., 1-2 courses)
