Department of Mechanical Engineering
Digital Magazine Semester - Fall 2013
This is the third in series of the Digital
Magazine “Semester” of the Department
of Mechanical Engineering. We start to
bring out the series of newsletter
“Semester” to promote the Department
and University level activities held over the
specified time.
This time was one of the hardest time to
work on the digital magazine due to
various reasons. Overall the performance
based on the extra-curricular activities, it
may be claimed satisfactory.
Newly appointed chairman of the
department, Prof. Dr. Altaf Hussain Rajpar
has shown keen interest in bringing out
this magazine not only digital format but
also to be published in hard copy shape
as well.
I am very thankful to all of my colleagues
at the Department specially the students
of 11 Mechanical who tried their best on
the assigned projects.
Someone special to be mentioned here is
Mr. Ali Akbar Mahar, 10ME94, is to pass
out this semester. We will always be
missing him. He is one of the hyper active
and dedicated component of the extra-
curricular activities held at the
department.
We wish all the best to current students
and all new comers of 2014 batch.
Your suggestions and comments will
always be welcomed.
Kindly contact at valasai@gmail.com.

Chairman’s Message
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Digital Magazine Semester - Fall 2013
First of all we congratulate you on the behalf of
the Mechanical Engineering Department and
welcome back to QUEST after completion of your
PhD from Malaysia. What is your educational
background and research?
Thank you very much for giving me opportunity to
share my words with the readers of this digital
magazine "Semester". I really appreciate the
efforts made by our colleague Engr. Gordhan
Valasai for promoting the departmental activities.
I belong to Hala New, some 60 kilometers
southwest of Nawabshah. Being a part of an
educated family, we are seven brothers, and all
are either engineers or doctors. I was always
interested in either become an engineer or a
doctor. Being good at Mathematics led me to
Engineering profession.
I got my primary education at my village, then
Intermediate from Hala New. Then I got admission
in B.E. Mechanical Engineering at Mehran
University, Jamshoro. Got my Bachelor of
Engineering in year 1989. I joined QUEST,
Nawabshah as a lecturer. Completed my M.E.
from University of Malaya in year 2007 and PhD in
year 2013.
How you did your PhD in University of Malaya,
Malaysia?
Initially; I went to Malaysia for Masters availing
the funding from my University; after the two
years university denied further funding due to the
budget
and financial condition. After that I requested for
continuation of my study leave and informed that
I will try to manage the tuition fees. I requested
my supervisor at University of Malaya and he
appointed me a Research Assistant; on 200 Ringgit
initially to 300 Ringgit) and continued my study
and complete my PhD in due time.
What was your research topic for PhD in
University of Malaya?
My research topic for PhD was Internal
Combustion Engine using Bio-Diesel. As the
consumption of petroleum products is increasing
and the natural resources of fossil fuels are
decreasing very fast, so I selected this project to
reduce the burden on the nature and for
sustainable development.

How you got Scholarship?
I got the scholarship from the Faculty
Development Programme of the University (name
of scholarship?) which is for the teachers only
Can you guide us that what are the basic
requirements for acquiring foreign scholarships?
When I applied for the study in Malaysia there
was no need of the IELTS and GRE results but
nowadays it is important to have good score in
IELTS and GRE to get admission in any reputed
university.
There are two types of admission in Malaysian
universities:
One is course study in which you have to study
only from the books and do related some practical
work which is necessary
And the other is research study; in which you have
to select some research project and work on it
towards your degree.
What type of study we should prefer by course or
by research?
In my opinion, research study is better because
you can earn money by becoming RA and doing
research on any project. For research study it is
necessary that you have at least 80% in your
previous degree
What type of problems Pakistani students are
facing in Malaysian universities?
In our country there is less concern on research
work but in other countries the main purpose of
study is to take research on particular field. But
our students are less aware about this thing and
became confuse how to start research work and
that is why many are leaving the universities as
they cannot start research work and study
properly.
How much expenses are there if anyone wants to
study without scholarship?
If anyone interested to study on the self-finance in
Malaysian universities there is about 0.8 to 1
million rupees per year for M.E studies.
Any message for the students?
Our many fresh graduates; after getting bachelor
degree and don't go for their further education
and do the jobs but my suggestion is that you
should go for your masters before going
elsewhere, it’s very easy for fresh graduates to do
their study in proper manner, of course there are
financial problems to our students but as I
mentioned; there are many opportunities to do
your study as well earn some money to become a
RA or do part-time job in this you can achieve
degree and become confident and you have lot of
opportunities for getting job as compared to B.E
student.

Digital Magazine Semester - Fall 2013
Hostel life is one of the enigmatic period of
every student. One can never forget this
wonderful experience during whole of his
life. The thing which we are going to talk
about the most amazing part of hostel that
is Hostel Nights.
The Hostel Nights are full of enjoyment,
experience, entertainment and enriched
with friends’ share of time. Hostel nights for
a student are like breezy and shiny day of
spring for a flower when it is in full swing.
Hostel Nights are well composed of musical
nights, chit chats with friends, walks, talks
and gaming nights, ranging from playing
cards to the throwing water on the sleeping
poors!
One can’t imagine from the public how
entertaining life is there in hostels!!! During
nights at hostels the students are always
busy in combined chatters and talking
freely and luxuriously to each other and
their rooms are always full of unstoppable
laughter. Hostel Life is bit boring without
playing different time taking games like
chess, ludo paced with shouts of friends.
Occasionally the musical nights are held.
Musical nights make hostel night more
beautiful. Famous singers are invited to
entertain the youth, they get out of control
and boys start dancing and jumping with
lot of noise and hurrahs……..
Most unique and amazing are the exam
nights, during which tension joins
enjoyment bring cheers and tears!!!
Canteens are kept open to late night. Boys
love to take late nights’ tea and paratha.
Some of the students who could not
prepare for exam they shout in exam night
on terrace “Array Ghorra Ghorra, na
parrhyaseen”!
As soon as the exams are over, the hostel
nights return to normal swing and process
is repeated throughout.
We wish that our juniors and coming soon
students will love to stay at hostel and
enjoy the hostel nights. Those who are
leaving or left hostels already must be
missing the Hostel Nights.

Canteen is one of the major component of any
organization for refreshment of its employees, students
and other customers to make the mind fresh and ready
for the range of tasks during office hours.
QUEST Canteen is the main canteen of Quaid -e-Awam
University of Engineering, Science and Technology,
Nawabshah Campus.
This is first canteen at QUEST is located at Sector C near
the Administration Block. The food available at this
canteen for the students; consists of multiple types
snacks and tea. The snacks include biscuits, chips and
spicy chaat; quite famous here in QUEST. Not only the
snacks but tea available at this canteen is quiet tasty.
Canteen Walla usually keep all types of biscuit brands
ranging from Sooper, Rio, Peanuts etc. beside other
brands of chips, cold drinks and juice.
Keeping in mind the increasing number of students,
QUEST Administration came up with a new idea of
establishing a canteen, to fulfill the need of the
students. This new canteen has been established at A-
Sector with the name of QUEST Tuck Shop.
This Tuck Shop is run by Sukoon Restaurant,
Nawabshah management, which is itself a very popular
restaurant at Nawabshah. This Tuck shop offers
breakfast which consists of Parathas and Tea and also
contains snacks and cold corner. The snacks consists of
Biscuits, Potato Chips, Sandwiches, Chicken roll, Spicy
chaat etc and also offers lunch which includes Biryani
and Chicken Qorma at competitive price as compared
with market rates.
The service is better as compared to the main canteen
and sitting arrangement is also nice because the space
is available for sitting and standing. The food available
at this tuck shop is of tasty and better quality.
