What is Diabetes?

A disease that affects how the body uses glucose (the bodies main source of

fuel). Both (type 1&2) cause high blood sugar.

What should happen…1. You eat2. Glucose from food enters blood stream3. Your pancreas makes hormone called insulin4. Insulin helps glucose get into the body’s cells5. Your body gets the energy it needs

Type 1 Diabetes

The body can’t make insulin.

• Without insulin the glucose can’t get into the cells

• Glucose stays in the blood causing high blood sugar.

Type 1 Diabetes

• No one know for sure what causes it.

• It can’t be prevented.

• The pancreas can’t ever make insulin again.

Type 1 Diabetes Signs

• Pee a lot (body’s way of getting rid of extra sugar)

• Drinking a lot (make up for all the peeing)

• Eating a lot (body is hungry for energy it can’t get from sugar)

• Weight loss (body starts to burn fat and muscle for fuel)

• Feel tired all the time

Living with Type 1 Diabetes

• Check blood sugar a few times a day• Inject insulin or use an insulin pump• Eat balanced, healthy diet – pay attention to

amounts of sugar & starches• Regular exercise• Regular checkups• ***if you inject insulin you need to eat so blood

sugar doesn’t get too low

Type 2 Diabetes

Body still makes insulin but the body doesn’t respond normally to it.

• Glucose is less able to enter the cells and supply energy

• The pancreas detects high blood sugar and makes more insulin

• Eventually the pancreas wears out.

Type 2 Diabetes

Who is at Risk?

• Being overweight

• People with family history

• Inactivity

• Race/Ethnicity: Native Amer., African Amer., Hispanic/Latino, or Asian/Pacific Islanders more likely to get type 2.

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

• Lose excess weight

• Reduce the amount of fat and calories consumed

• Exercise moderately most days for 30 to 60 minutes.

Type 2 Diabetes Signs

• Pee a lot (body’s way of getting rid of extra sugar)

• Drinking a lot (make up for all the peeing)

• Feel tired all the time

• Dark ring around neck that won’t wash off.

• Thick, dark, velvety skin under arms, between fingers, toes, elbows, & knees.

Living with Type 2 Diabetes

• Eat balanced, healthy diet – pay attention to amounts of sugar & starches

• Regular exercise

• Take insulin or other meds that helps the body use insulin more effectively.

• Check blood sugar regularly

• Regular doctors visits
