• Long-term savings or investment accounts for children (0-18)

• Usually used for postsecondary education

• Provide incentives to build savings (e.g., seed deposit and matches)

• Account withdrawals are restricted

What Are CSAs?

www.savingsforkids.org

Designing CSA Programs with an Equity Lens

• CSA programs aim to help all children complete postsecondary education

• But they’re operating within a society with deep racial and economic inequities

• Equity – Absence of systematic differences between groups with different levels of underlying social advantage or disadvantage

• To promote equity, program design and operations must account for the uneven playing field many children face

www.savingsforkids.org

Key Principles for Promoting Equity

• Community-centered design – Center community involvement, particularly focusing on low-income households and households of color.

• Accessibility and inclusivity – Ensure all program elements are accessible to children from low-income households and children of color.

• Targeted deployment of resources – Direct more resources to communities facing structural barriers to economic advancement.

• Ongoing community engagement – Continuously gather feedback from participants and other community members.

www.savingsforkids.org

• Design

• Program goals – Explicitly establish addressing inequities as a primary goal rather than a general goal about supporting all children

• Enrollment – Automatic enrollment ensures equity in participation

• Incentives – Provide more benefits to communities facing structural barriers to economic advancement

• Implementation and Operations

• Communications and outreach – Focus marketing and outreach efforts on low-income communities and communities of color

• Partnerships – Have a range of community partners to engage participants and deliver services.

• Tracking outcomes – Collect data to determine program impact on different demographic groups and progress toward equity goals

How Did We Get Here?

Equitable Design:Families First: Family-Centered Design

Equitable Design:Bring Partners In: Collaborative Learning

Cohorts

Equitable Design:Create Feedback Loops: Family Champions

Family Champions work on behalf of Boston Saves to engage families and raise awareness of the program.

● 19 Family Champions, each assigned to a

school.

● Attended 4 training workshops

● Attended 66% of school events and

4 community events.

Impact:

Schools with a Family

Champion had an average

login and account linking

attempt rate that was 70% higher than schools without a

Family Champion.

Equitable Design:Follow Through

● Savings Center UX Testing

● Non-monetary incentive

● Curriculum integration

● Language access

1. Create the space to let people surprise you

2. Listen, support, + follow through

3. Identify + invite experts who can help solve the

problem

4. Show them you see them
