“a big investment, but long term savings”
“it’s hard to well display 2D presentation with 3D prototype together for each concept”
“need solutions for custom/ specialized pieces”
“it would be great to have other displays options like tables for material samples”
“better designed mobile display walls”
“a choice in material”
“properly archiving items”
“noise control”
“we are too rushed out of the rooms and are losing cultural and cross category knowledge”

PROBLEM ANALYSIS -> DESIGN GOALSwhat are the pain points of this space and how can we solve for them?
MATERIAL WASTE
WASTED TIME
LACK OF SPACE
LIMITED ACCESS
AVAILABILITY
POOR LIGHTING
NEED FOR DIGITAL
LACK OF RESPECT
DISORGANIZATION
- MINIMIZE THE USE OF FOAM CORE AND USE MATERIALS THAT WILL LAST LONG AND DESIGN DISPLAYS TO BE ADAPTABLE-
- MAKE THE DISPLAYS SIMPLE AND EASY TO USE TO CUT DOWN ON SET-UP TIME -
- ADD WALL SPACE AND REORGANIZE THE BACK HALLWAY TO CREATE MORE SPACE FOR STORAGE -
- CREATE EASIER ACCESS POINTS TO ELECTRICAL AND WATER -
- MAKE A SYSTEM OF STANDARD DISPLAYS TO FIT THE NEEDS OF EACH CATEGORY -
- ADD FEATURES TO MAKE LIGHTING MORE CONSISTENT AND ADAPTABLE -
- CREATE MOBILE TV FIXTURES THAT BLEND IN WITH THE DISPLAY FURNITURE -
- FORM A PROTOCOL FOR USE, STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE -
- DEVELOP A BETTER SYSTEM FOR STORING AND SIGNING OUT ITEMS -
- THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BRING ATTENTION TO THE WORK AND NEVER DISTRACT FROM IT -
- BE MINDFUL OF THE EXPERIENCE FROM BOTH THE PRESENTER AND THE VIEWER’S POINT OF VIEW -

RESURFACE AND REFRESHupdating the overall look and quality of the room
-strip down the walls and carpet-build new walls with a minimal offset-clad in a more permanent material
“please find a solution to replace the black foam core with something that is permanent, easy to clean, can look good even after multiple pin ups”“permanent and attractive pin up material on walls that is as effective as black foam core but does not need replacing” “charcoal gray material that is currently installed in some of the recently renovated meeting rooms could work very well”“floor not being clean, gross carpet”
AUTUMN LOWDER // 11
CREATE MORE SURFACE AREAcreating access points to things located behind the new walls
-creating secondary doors in the walls allows for additional pinable area around the exterior of the room-once all the models have been placed in the room, the back doors can be shut for a clean look-this feature eliminates the visual and spacial break that is created by the large back doors
“pinning against walls is a preference because it is known and there is more real estate”“interuptions in wall can effect set up”“wasted corner space”“access to ample electric outlets”
-new walls can be offset only slightly if door access to electrical and water supply is created-outlets can easily be found by opening the doors in the panels-cords and tubes can be run under the door and into the room
AUTUMN LOWDER // 12
RESTRUCTURE THE ENTRANCEcreating more of a gallery experience
-enter from the first door down the hallway-secondary opening to the room-set the scene as attendees enter the room
AUTUMN LOWDER // 13
MOBILE WALLSfor space separation and pinning
“I would use the mobile walls if they had a nice, clean look” “ability to change the size of the space would be nice”“should have mass and hidden wheels”“table fixtures need to be able to be pressed up against walls”
-these mobile walls have hidden wheels and match the exterior walls-allows for spacial differentiation between projects-look permanent and blend with fixed wall structure-moving walls save space while creating a dynamic and flexible environment
AUTUMN LOWDER // 14
MOUNTING WALLSfor shower sets and shelving displays
black slat wall
rolled paper
plywood backing
-these mobile walls can be used to mount anything on a vertical plane-use the slat wall and shelves to display prototypes or competitor products-wooden backing can be repaired a few times between mounts before getting replaced -a fresh sheet of recycleable paper can be applied to acheive a clean surface with less waste than foam core
AUTUMN LOWDER // 15
KITCHEN HEIGHT TABLESused for displaying kitchen sinks and other kitchen accessories
painted mdf
powder coated steel tube
“a presentation table” “new designed rolling bays that are mostly flush faced in the front with clean black foam core”“I don’t think its neccesary to display sinks in realistic cabinets, I just do it because thats how it’s been done”
AUTUMN LOWDER // 16
REMOVEABLE FACESto accomodate different sink sizes and styles
remove standard facesreplace with cut pieces
insert sink prototype
“flexibility is really important”“needing to have custom built podiums / table for each review”“there are no readily available mounting systems, or extra time and effort are required to custom-build display fixtures”
top lifts out easily and has attached guides to keep it in place
panel hooks keep removeable front panel secure
frame has center beams to hold supports for sinks
AUTUMN LOWDER // 17
PEDESTALS AND PLATFORMSa mix of sizes and styles to fit everyones display needs
“I spend a lot of extra time polishing my displays with personally built foam core. Either to cover damage from before or distracting unsightly elements. This takes hours and often leads me to work late into the night a day or 2 before a review”“we have our own pedestals, but people take them all the time, and when we need them we can’t find them”-69% of surveyed designers prefer to display competitor products at a lesser level than their new product
AUTUMN LOWDER // 18
LIGHTING AND DIGITALadding technical elements to elevate the presentation materials
“inconsistent lighting makes selecting real estate a challenge”“inconvenient/ ineffective lighting”“the ability to pin-up digitally (i.e. turn the walls into screens)““more track LED track lighting fixtures... warm light”
clip-on light
AUTUMN LOWDER // 19
THE CREATION OF A SYSTEMmobile structures that belong together
“uniform 2D and 3D solutions that work for everyone”“a variety of attractive display stands on high quality casters that don’t require foam core cladding”“I don’t want to see ugly arms with wheels at the bases. They should blend into a wall if we set them up together”
AUTUMN LOWDER // 20
SYSTEM ORGANIZATIONkeeping items orderly and maintained
“disorganization/ lack of protocol and organization leading to mess and inconvenience”“standard display options, stored in one location, kept clean and damage free”“have a stock of available stands/displays of different sizes that is available for all groups to use for DR”“back hallway is a mess, how do we organize it?”
-major cleanup of back hallway storage areas-create one large space for all the displays to be neatly stored-stands should be put away clean and free of presentation finishes and materials-any custom pieces made for the frames should be properly documented and stored

BENEFITSwhy should we invest in improving this space?
- OUR PRIVATE SPACES SHOULD REINFORCE OUR BRAND -
- TIME IS MONEY: A MORE EFFICIENT SYSTEM WILL REDUCE TIME SPENT PREPARING FOR REVIEWS -
- WE WASTE COUNTLESS HOURS BUILDING ONE-TIME USE DISPLAYS -
- MONEY IS MONEY: WE WASTE A TON OF IT ON FOAM CORE EACH YEAR 2018 = $12,057 2017 = $16,421 2016 = $11,633 2015 = $10,195
- DISPLAYING THE HARD WORK OF OUR EMPLOYEES IN A HIGHER QUALITY SPACE CAN AFFECT THEIR CONFIDENCE LEVEL -
- AN ELEVATED EXPERIENCE OF WORK CAN BE ACHIEVED BY FIRST DETERMINING THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE AND A SPACE AND THEN DESIGNING SURROUNDINGS, FURNISHINGS AND TOOLS AROUND THOSE NEEDS -
