DESCRIPTIONOFCOURSE:Thiscourseisdesignedtohelpstudentslearnthefundamentalsofresearchandtheimplicationsofresearch-basedthinkingandpracticesastheserelatetotheprofessionalfieldsofartsandarteducation.Thepurposeofthecourseistoprepareyoutoreadandunderstandresearch,asyouwillneedthisknowledgetojustifyapplicationsforfundingand/ortosupportyourownpractice-basedresearchprojects.Thecoursealsoprovidesstudentswhoareinterestedinpursuingscholarlyresearchthebasicunderstanding,terminology,theory,andtoolstobegindraftingtheirMAthesisorproject.Includedinthecourseisasurveyofthemajortypesofresearchandanoverviewofwhatisinvolvedintheprocessofconductingandcommunicatingresearchprojects.Studentswillcompleteafullresearchplan/proposalasthemainassignmentforthecourse.Thiscourseisinpartseminarandinpartlecture.Whereaswewillguideourselvesbythescheduleinthissyllabus,thecourseisdesignedtoflexibleinstructureandcontenttorespondtothevariousinterestsoftheparticipantsandtoaddresstopicsandquestions,astheybecomeimportant. PURPOSEANDOBJECTIVESOFTHECOURSE:Thiscourseisstructuredtoassistgraduatestudentsinunderstandingresearchprocessesandpracticesand,subsequently,topreparestudentsforexecutingscholarlyresearchandwriting.Theemphasisisinidentifyingandevaluatingresearchfoci,problems,questions,andmethods,examinationofresearchliteraturerelatedtoartsandeducation,anddevelopmentofaresearchprojectproposal.Attheendofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:
• Examinethewealthoftheories,concepts,andtechniquesofresearchinrelationtotheknowledgeofyoursubjectarea
andprofessionalfield;• Read,understand,criticallyanalyze,andcomparethecurrentresearchknowledgeofyourspecificsubjectarea;• Assessandcriticallyevaluateresearchreportsandarticles;• ConductacriticalresearchliteraturereviewspecifictoyourprofessionalinterestandusingtechnologyavailableatUF;• Understandandidentifyaspectsandstepsinvolvedinconductingartisticoreducationalresearch,andtolearnthe
basicskillstocreateaplanforaresearchproject• Recognizethephilosophicalimplicationsandtypesofknowledgeformulatedbychoosingaphilosophicalframework
andmethodsforresearch;and• Understandtheethicalimplicationsofresearchproceduresforcollecting,analyzing,interpreting,andpresenting
research-basedinformation(withhumansubjects);and• Developadetailedplan(aresearchproposal)toadvancetheknowledgeofyoursubjectarea.
Theultimategoalinthiscourseisthepreparationofadetailedplan/proposalforaprojectrelatedtostudent'sMAproject/thesisinterest.Aspartofthisprocess,studentwillclarifyaninterestarea,identifyanappropriateapproachforcollectinginformationandforgeneratingcriticalunderstandingsasaresultofidentifiedmethodsfordisseminatingandanalyzinginformation.Allpartsoftheproposalwillbesynthesizedinahigh-quality,well-writtendocument,andashortpresentationoftheresearchproposaltobepresentedtotheclass.

COURSEREQUIREMENTS:Toachievetheobjectivesofthecourse,thestudentswill:
• Conductextensive,repeatedsearchesforresearchandinformationonvariousplatformsofferedbyUF• Readandsynthesizeselectedreadingsinresearchonartandarteducation• Conductadetailedanalysisofaselectedresearcharticle• LearntoutilizeAPA(6thed.)referencestyletociteandcreditresources• Preparetowritethedifferentpartsoftheresearchproposalthroughworksheetsandguidedinstruction• Completeawrittenproposalonachosentopic• Presenttheresearchproposalinclass
• MAThesis/ProjectProposal(10-20pages/2500-5000words) (40%)• Worksheetsandguidedassignments (20%)• Detailedresearcharticlecritique (10%)• Readingreflections/discussions (20%)• Proposalpresentation (10%)
ONLINE COURSE EVALUATION PROCESS: Students are expected to provide feedback on the quality of instruction in this course based on 10 criteria. Faculty do not receive the results until after the grades have been finalized. These evaluations are conducted online at https://evaluations.ufl.edu . Evaluations are typically open during the last two or three weeks of the semester, but students will be given specific times when they are open.
