Protect the Skin Youre In

Skin Cancer amp Melanoma Awareness

Month

Spring is here and people in Charleston are

beginning to head out to the golf courses beaches

and boats We all enjoy the warmer weather but

remember that May is also National Skin Cancer

Awareness Month Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States

affecting more than two million people annually Fortunately it is also highly curable if found in its

early stages

Melanoma the most serious form of skin cancer is

responsible for 73 percent of skin cancer deaths

and one person dies from melanoma every hour in

the United States If detected early enough

melanoma is very treatable One of the most

important things you can do to ensure early

detection is to have a complete body examination

by a board certified dermatologist During this

exam your dermatologist may use a small

handheld lighted scope called a dermatoscope

Proper equipment is important because when used

by a trained dermatologist the dermatoscope

raises the chances that he or she will recognize a

cancerous mole at its earliest stages

Based on your history a complete skin examination

should be done every three months to one year

Everyone should have it done yearly but for those

with a personal or family history of skin cancer or

excessive sun exposure more frequent

examinations are suggested

Here are a couple tips to help improve your ldquoSun

Senserdquo

l Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed

skin using a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at

least 15 that provides broad-spectrum

protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and

ultraviolet B (UVB) rays

l For optimum results look for sunscreen that

lists the ingredients zinc oxide titanium

dioxide avobenzone or Mexoryl Usually a

combination of these ingredients will produce

the best protection Zinc oxide should be at a

minimum concentrationof 5-10 percent and

titanium dioxide should be at least 5 percent

l Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going

outside to allow it to penetrate to the lower

layers of the skin Re-apply every two

hours even on cloudy days and after

swimming or sweating

l Wear protective clothing such as a long-

sleeved shirt pants a wide-brimmed hat

and sunglasses when possible

l Seek shade when appropriate remembering

that the sunrsquos rays are strongest between 10

am and 4 pm

l Use extra caution near water snow and

sand as they reflect the damaging rays of

the sun which can increase your chance of

sunburn

l Protect children from sun exposure by

applying sunscreen often and liberally

l Obtain Vitamin D safely through a healthy

diet that includes vitamin supplements Donrsquot seek the sun

l Avoid tanning beds Ultraviolet light from the

sun and tanning beds causes skin cancer and

wrinkling If you want to look like yoursquove

been in the sun consider using a sunless

self-tanning product but continue to use

sunscreen

The FDA wants the labeling on your sunscreen to

tell you more about protection against the suns

harmful rays

In addition to regular skin screenings by your

dermatologist periodic self-exams can be

extremely helpful in the early detection of skin

cancer In fact Dr Schlesinger observes that approximately 50 of the Melanoma found in his

pracitce are first noticed by patients When examining yourself remember the ABCDEs of

Melanoma and use the following 5 steps to ensure a

thorough self-exam

Indoor Tanning is Out

Indoor tanning before the age of 30 has been

associated with a significant increase in the risk of

melanoma Yet on an average day more than one million Americans use indoor tanning salons Research shows 70 percent of indoor tanners are

female primarily 16 to 29 years old an age group

that is particularly at risk for developing skin

cancer

To help educate the public the American Academy

of Dermatology has developed Public Service

Advertisements (PSAs) that feature two women who

are skin cancer survivors in their early 20s who

used tanning beds If you or anyone you know may be at risk of skin cancer due to indoor tanning

please share these stories with them

MEDICARE UPDATE

As many of you may be aware Congress has been

evaluating a bill with a proposed 212 reduction

on rendering preferred providers fees The

American Academy of Dermatology and other

members of the medical community believe

Congress cannot continue to manipulate the budget

or utilize temporary patches A permanent and

comprehensive reform of the Medicare fee schedule

must be passed to ensure that the Medicare

Program is sound and that patients will continue to

have access to quality dermatologic care and other

medical services that they made need

On April 15th Congress voted to avert the 212

cut in the Medicare rate schedule and that

reimbursements to those physicians who have

elected to participate in Medicare will continue to

receive payment at the 2009 rate through May 31st

of this year On April 1st it was initially decided that

Medicare contractors would not process physician

claims at the reduced rates for 10 working days

however on April 15th this decision expired In the

interim some claims have been paid in compliance

with Medicarersquos prompt pay requirement and will

eventually require additional monies paid Look for

the arrival of corrected Explanation of Benefits and

make yourself accountable to know what should be

paid on your behalf
