Introduction

As part of the City Centre Regeneration Framework process the previously adopted Public Realm Strategy (2007) has been reviewed, including the Pallette of Materials for use in public realm projects in the city centre. The following materials illustrate the style and colours required to create a consistent character and sustainable environment. To ensure that the Council can demonstrate that it fulfils its duty of achieving value for money and complies with UK law governing procurement, when contracting for the supply of these products, similar materials and street furniture can be offered and will be assessed to ensure they do not detract from the consistency of character.

Note: All existing granite kerbs should be retained and relayed where possible. Where new kerbs are required these are to be sourced primarily as reclaimed units. Granite kerbs/setts cannot be sourced from the UK. If new ones are needed, for example where commonly a kerb to an old radius needs replacing with one of a different radius, they may need to be imported. On a project by project basis, research must be made between the relative merits of European/Chinese granite.

Finish Diamond sawn on all faces.

Colour Varies from blue grey to rust brown.

Dimensions 100mm gauge x 100mm x 75mm thick or alternatively more random lengths of setts may be considered to match the Victoria and Albert Street cross-over areas but with the same general thickness.

TACTILE PAVING

Note: Top photo shows the red granite tactile unit for use at controlled pedestrian crossings, and approved by Access Officer and Disability Forum. Lower photo (as existing) shows the moulded tactile units in York stone, for use only at uncontrolled pedestrian crossings.

Tactile paving should be used with a surrounding edge of a contrasting material, avoiding arms cutting into the pavement. No concrete tactile paving is acceptable in the city centre. Drawing number 2171-021 in the final section of this report illustrates details of installation of tactile paving.

Tree pits should be minimum 1mx1m square in size. Consideration should be given to using root control barrier to ensure the containment below ground, protect utilities and surface paving. Top photo shows a tree pit surfaced with resin bonded permeable paving for use in hard paved surfaces. For a row of trees, extending the tree pit in a linear trench should be considered to connect the root zone.
